I wonder what the print run is on all these books. Does it vary from gold to gold?
I wore a Valiant shirt at Planet ComiCon in Kansas City, MO... and all I got was a rock. :(

I do think it varies by Gold book on the print run and I bet Bloodshot can answer this question better. Next time, grab the Shadowman Gold books. :thumb:

If I got a gold book for every time I've worn a Valiant shirt at a con where VEI has been I'd........

Have a lot of gold books.

Unity #1 GOLD is a tough pull, for sure; but trust me when I tell you, the Shadowman #1 GOLD is definitely more scarce. Definitely.
Are you saying tougher in cgc grade or in general?
BOTH.

Census shows only four 9.8 copies of Shadowman #1 GOLD, as compared to almost twice that many of Unity #1 GOLD (seven, to be specific).

And I personally garnered three of the Shadowman #1 GOLDs, and four of the Unity #1 GOLDs, so there's that, too.
Thanks. Good info to know.
Well, in retrospect, I do want to clarify a couple of things. One is, although the numbers do show there are more 9.8 Unity #1 GOLDs than 9.8 Shadowman #1 GOLDs, there's a two-fold reason for that: there certainly "seems" to have been more raw Unity #1 GOLDs available in the wild since it's release than I've ever seen of the Shadowman #1 GOLD. But the Shadowman #1 GOLD is FAR more condition-sensitive, as well. Very, VERY tough to get this book, in general; and even more so in high grade. Just a real ball-buster!

Also, it's no secret we're all spread out over the U.S. (as well as the world), so finding these rare raws "can" be slightly easier to locate in a particular centralized local, than another; especially if their (initial) release was at a Con on the West Coast, as opposed to the East Coast, if you follow.

So, lastly, although I aggressively search the grid ALL over, as tough as the Unity #1 GOLD was to find (as well as garner a 9.8 on), the Shadowman #1 GOLD was a much, MUCH tougher beast for me to tame.

I bought 15 copies of Bloodshot: Reborn #1 (1:100 sketch variant); well, 16 copies of you count the copy I got from Paradise, and only pulled one 9.8 slab after all that.

There are likely 390-450 copies of this book, so based on that number, IF 100% of those copies were submitted for grading, only 24-28 CGC/CBCS 9.8's would likely ever exist.

That won't happen, so we will obviously be seeing less than that number.

Some books are just redidiculously hard to get in top-grade.

I believe I've owned 3 copies of Shadowman #1 (Gold) and each had at least one flaw that IMO would keep it from 9.8. Have one more copy inbound soon (hopefully) and will see if this is the one. Don't feel like submitting 16 Shadowman #1 (Gold) to get one 9.8; at that rate I almost might rather buy the 9.8 lol!

A V1 9.8 is easier to get than a VEI 9.4, even though they are 25 years older. Yesterday, I went to a shop to pull Book of Death candidates, because my mail order books don't always come in top condition. Because of the covers, I got great copies. Fall of Bloodshot? I went through about 30 copies and none were in 9.6. None. It's been like that, and the shops by me don't usually order many, if at all. Q2? I can't find copies without spine splits. I bought a 1:10 9.8 variant for $50 last week. That was a steal.

I'm happy with a VEI 9.6. That is really hard for me to get. A 9.8 is really hard unless it is one of the premium covers.
It seems like the smaller the print Run, the harder it is to find good copies.

Therefore, my slab quest is 9.8 for V1 and Acclaim, and 9.6 for VEI.

DBS's numbers suggest, VERY generally, that it's becoming increasingly harder to pull a 9.8 on a limited book. I think that might be true.

And after reading the whole thread, I would like to nominate a book that no one else has so far. Of all the valiant books I've been collecting this was the hardest one to find and it's not even in mint condition....drum roll for effect....

Shadowman 13 Shane Davis variant. This was a 1:50 variant (Also first app. of Punk Mambo, new character) that was impossible to get is the series was getting bad reviews and people were not paying attention to it. I am noticing a little bit of a trend though the shuttle and books have been very hard to come by. Other than that I think the XO 15 error and of course the Shadowman retailer edition are the rarest VEI books. Eternal Warrior 5 Mack variant is my favorite though, and I told him so at SDCC!
