Can someone explain 9.4 through 10.0 for me?
I honestly don't know the difference. If I'm considering sending a seemingly mint comic off to CGC, what tell-tale problems should I look for that would distinguish it from a 9.8 or (God forbid!) 10.0?

I noticed the biggest difference between a 9.4 and 9.6 when, to the causual observer, they are both mint is that the 9.6 is folded correctly on the spine. Just my two cents.

Well I would say that the difference is that when you get into the 9.8 - 10 range that is the easiest to grade. Just look at the book. Take a good honest look at it. If you see anything at all then it isnt a 10. But that means really taking a honest look at it...pretend you were buying it...if you still dont see anything then you might have a super HG book.

I have a spreadsheet where I transcribed the basic characteristics of each grade as outlined in the OGG. PM me your email and I will send it to you.shaxper wrote:That's pretty much why I'm asking the question. If you cannnot decern the difference between a NM 9.4 book and up...you have problems grading
In order to grade 9.6+, you need a strong 'raking' light, meaning one at a very severe angle. After looking at the book normally, use the raking light to see surface wear on the front and back covers. Any break or wave in gloss is bad.
You also need to look at every page. I think they really tend to frown on interior page creases and margin chunks, and even bindery holes at the edges of the pages.

I've gotten quite a few requests for my spreadsheet, too many in fact. I knew how to contact the publisher of the OGG, so I did so looking for guidance. Well, the guidance was, and I paraphrase loosely, "all you all have to buy your own darn copy".
Sorry, I can't send it to anyone, unless you prove to me you are already an owner of the book.
Or, you can paypal me $30 and I'll send you a copy of the spreadsheet with a copy of the VCB attached! For $500 I'll include my Bloodshot 7 VcVSS. For a cool $2mil you can have my house, car, and full comic collection as well. No paypal accepted on that last one.

Hmmm. Didn't come through. Give it another try. Wait a minute, can't accept paypal for the $2mil. The fees would be $60000. Send me a personal check.Schmakt wrote:2 mil sent - check your paypal accountckb wrote:I've gotten quite a few requests for my spreadsheet, too many in fact. 9.6 -- New comic-book Day -- (usually a Wednesday afternoon)shaxper wrote:D'oh.
Well, in that case, could you loosely summarize the differences in 9.5+ grades?
9.8 -- Grader has a date tonight
9.9 -- Grader got laid
10.0 -- Grader lost Virginity and is a very happy 34-year old.
See? Still Hell-bound.

actually, this is a topic that us retailers discuss all the time. most of our biggest problems don't come from the 9.4's and 9.6's, but the differences between 9.8, 9.9, and 10.0.
i mean, 9.9 by definition is "mint", which means (at least according to Overstreet standards) as flawless. What in the world could CGC POSSIBLY see on a 9.8 or 9.9 copy that keeps it from being a 10?! and IF they do see something, then that means that book could be (at best) a NM+, which is 9.6. haven't been able to figure that out.
but i agree with the advise on this board...if you can see any flaw at all, then it's not going to get the premium grade that everyone hopes for. my standard for submission is pretty much a very thourough look, and to hold the book up at an angle in the light to make sure there are not spine stresses (very common). i think those nearly invisible stresses keep alot of books at the 9.4 grade and most people don't realize that.
of course, this is all just opinion, and maybe they have a monkey that flips a coin to decide.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.
