CGC or CBCS
Well,
The title sums it up. What are the board members opinions on which one to use?
For the secondary market, does CGC get a premium compared to CBCS?
The prices with CBCS are cheaper, and better turn around time to boot. But CGC has the track record.
Really curious because I have a batch of VEI Gold books/Divinity to send in,
Thanks,
Ed

CGC or CBCS
What's this 9.6 CBCS "check mark" designation that I overpaid for recently? I probably should have researched it before pulling the trigger, but you know, alcoholism. I had a few beers and then then read that damned DBS article on Harbinger 1.

Are you talking about this designation? CBCS 9.6* If so, I think they are saying the book shows like a 9.8, but received a 9.6 grade. I have two Eternal Warrior slabs that got a similar grade.possumgrease wrote:What's this 9.6 CBCS "check mark" designation that I overpaid for recently? Wow. I have lots of back and forth opinions on this erring on the side of "oh cmon, for God's sake", but there's an intellectual argument to be had for this kind of designation. But it's also dumb, because if it's not a 9.8, then it shoudn't "show" as one... yet it makes sense, but it's dumb. But I get it. But... what?mkb28 wrote:Are you talking about this designation? Its lower than 9.8, but better than 9.6 ~what number am I thinking of?
I wish their was a Spinal Tap comic, and I had a copy CGC graded at 11.

Oh, no, no, no. That's not a real number at all. We all know that only even decimals exist after 8.5.Phantom wrote:Its lower than 9.8, but better than 9.6 ~what number am I thinking of?

So they use an asterisk instead of a 9.7? Makes sense since nobody uses a 9.7 but the asterisk is crazy popular.

Re: CGC or CBCS
I prefer CGC. If I have a choice, I'll usually wait until I can get a CGC book, and I won't pay as much for a CBCS book. I prefer the CGC case, and while the extra info on a CBCS slab is nice, I find the CGC design simpler and easier to read. The turn time difference isn't hugely significant. For me, the jury is still out on whether they will be considered on part with CGC,but it's early yet. Give the. 5 years and we will have a better idea.

Re: CGC or CBCS
As long as it is not PGX, I have no real preference. I don't know if there has been any comparison between books in the same grade from each company and the market price for each of them. It may be too hard to ever get enough confidence in the data one way or another to determine if CGC books sell for more in the same grade as CBCS books or not.
I have a 9.4 from each company and the defects in each book are similar. I would at least say they seem to have the same standards for the grades I have seen.

Re: CGC or CBCS
Just cracked open my remaining CGC books. Felt great. Books smelled great.
But to answer your question, CGC.
That whole 9.6 but looks like a 9.8 is rank bullsh|t
