Every time I see a good artwork in pencils and inks, it's better than the colored version. Nord's splash page for Days of Steel is a perfect example. Coloring just seems to wipe away so much of the fine line art.

^Pencils by nature have more nuance as a medium than solid black inks (although similar effects can be achieved using ink washes instead of solid blacks - but that is less common in comics). It's a pressure sensitive medium - lighter or darker tones depend on how much pressure you apply as you draw, allowing a natural sliding grey-scale to happen in the art, a means of rendering 3D forms instead of just strictly linework.

Traditional comic inks are much less forgiving, you are largely resigned to drawing lines. You can still render 3D form by effectively using cross-hatching techniques, but it's still a more severe & defined look than raw pencils.

Colour is a whole other can of worms - it takes the nuance & complexity of shading & multiplies that by
1000! It's a shame when colour in comics doesn't work as well in tandem with the b&w artwork.

One of my favourite current comic artists, CAFU, seems to use pencils to stunning effect - he has all kinds of high contrast & dark linework, but it's coupled with that amazing nuance of shading you can only get with pencils. I think his work looks even more outstanding for how well colour complements it.

LaRosa is also just blasting it out of the park lately with his marker rendering. I can't wait to see how Bloodshot Reborn: The Analog Man artwork looks in colour starting next month.

Congrats. Beautiful display and beautiful art, man.

On the pencil issue, I generally run away from it. Only exception is my Clayton Henry page
