Ads in comics

Post by StarBrand »

I always enjoy reading the ads in comics, particularly the older ones. I was reading Dell's Nukla #1 yesterday, and in it was an ad for a Beatles poster signed by all four members of the band.
I wonder if any of those posters survived.

That is one of the benefits of binding large comic series runs into HC books is you get to see those old ads. I especially like to see what some of the early Valiant books were selling for in the ads. :o

Another favorite of mine is the "X-Ray Glasses."

I forgot how many ads there were back then, here are the ads from Fantastic Four 52.

I had a bunch of old silver age stuff as a kid, so I fondly remember these :D

I meant to comment earlier... I wonder if it was signed by the Beatles or by an assistant or secretary or just a print of a signed poster.... :hm:

I just read the ad again. It claims every poster was signed by every member of the Beatles.
Thanks for posting those pics of ads. Lots of nostalgia there. I'm getting ready to publish a comic and I'm thinking of putting an homage to one of the old comic book ads in it.

Old comics ads are my favorite part of reading old books. I hate that everyone takes them out in collections, scans, digital (like Marvel Unlimited), etc. It's like a little time capsule of what kids were interested in at the time. Even love re-reading my 90s comics to take me back to middle school.

Awesome, love seeing these - I haven't read through any of my old comics in awhile to look at them firsthand. There was ways something I wanted to get from them, but never did since most of the ads were out of date even when I was a kid collecting back issues.

My top three wants as a kid, from old ads;

1] Sea Monkeys. I was always deeply intrigued by what those things could be - based on the ads I thought they were actually little intelligent creatures, haha!

2] Footlocker full of toy soldiers. Never got one, but the idea of a large treasure chest full of plastic soldiers always fired my imagination - I used to think the footlocker was going to be a large crate that would sit at the end of my bed like a hope chest

3] Life Sized Frankenstein stand-up. I also never clued in to the fact that these offerings were just flat cardboard stand-ups, instead I always imagined getting a huge 7ft tall figure of Frankenstein to tuck in the corner of my room.

One of my all time favourite ads from old comics was the Jack Davis monster illustrations for Slim Jim's - the werewolf one being my favourite. Still love those drawings to this day :)

Also - I would totally buy that hulk front/back short of it was available now! Why is he pulling a wooden rabbit cart on a rope?

In the 90s I saw Sea Monkeys n a drug store and bought them for my friend's kid so I could see them myself. Lol. I think they were some sort of dried shrimp or something that sort of came to life in water.
Of course, as a kid I wanted the X-Ray eyes and there was something that supposedly allowed you to see around corners that I wanted. Also, I could've used Charles Atlas' product that would have stopped other guys from figuratively kicking sand in my face.
I'm now reminded of a friend who sent off for information on how to grow taller. The information he received was that if he sent in more money he would be given a technique on how to grow taller...

Its sad that the ads have sort of faded from comics. Other than advertising their own products, VEI has pretty much no ads. Same for Image. Even Marvel and DC seem to have turned more toward the marketing of their own books, movies, toys etc. I wonder, if they were able to get more advertising revenue, would ads help slow the ever rising costs of buying an actual comic book?

I always like the Twinkies/Hostess ads. They'd sometimes use comic characters, sometimes it would be cartoon representations of real-life people, sports figures mostly.

Always great.

Man, I love those old ads from 1975. I had the Cornelius and Ursus POTA kits, and now remember assembling those on the kitchen table--with parental assistance--and then staring at them (for who knows how long) while imagining stories about the characters. I'd forgotten entirely about that pleasant family experience for almost...uh...40 YEARS until seeing your post, Visitor. Thanks a lot for the flashback!

Me too I like looking at my old comics and seeing adds for terminator video game that I played. Brings back memories. I also like a letter page like in the walking dead by Image comics. :offtopic:
I Miss the good old days.
