Is "Imperium" Ending?

Post by mkb28 »

Did I miss this announcement? :? If the series is ending, what is the final issue number? I just switched to buying trades and now I am buying the last 4 issues of X-O. I didn't think it made sense to have every single issue of X-O and a trade for the last four issues. I wonder if I need to do the same thing for Imperium? :!:

Thanks,

Michael

What I've heard is Imperium will have an "Omegas" type finale to wrap it up... outside of the current numbering system

Thanks, Brian. Do you think issue #16 is the last regular issue before the "Omegas" type event?

Issue #16 is the final issue. Dinesh said on Twitter that they would explain soon.

This.

I'm happy that Imperium exists at all and consider it one of the very best series Valiant has ever released.

That said, it's sort of sad how many people out there in comic book land cry about quality, creative risk, and new concept originality when Imperium really has it all. The numbers (for what ever reason) have been lower than I personally would like, but in many ways I sort of feel that the story is simply too smart or too good for people to get. Not one bad issue has been released. Not one.

I will certainly read to the end, and enjoy what is to come.

My favourite Valiant comic. In points, it was even more wowowow than Harbinger (issues 6, 7, 12 for example), but as you say, maybe it is too smart for the casual comic guy/girl. Sad but True. :(

Maybe it's not that it's too smart perhaps, but more that Imperium is heavily linked with events that preceeded it in Harbinger: perhaps new readers have found it too difficult a book to 'jump on' to, as it requires a fairly hefty knowledge of Harada, Harbinger foundation, vine, harbinger wars and probably other things in order to really get the best out of it?

Just off the top of my head, if I hit Imperium for the first time as a totally new reader, I'd probably be wondering why this Japanese guy can fly, wants to take over the world and why he's got a robot and an alien for friends and a bunch of kids in uniforms running around at his command. I highly doubt I'd take the comic to the counter to make a purchase. I seem to recall that Imperium makes a lot of assumptions of prior knowledge, so doesn't explain a lot of this stuff in depth in the comic, other than perhaps the 'shoutback' page in the front of each issue...

Just a thought really

Not that I don't agree with shadowman99 about the average person taking chances on comics mid-stream these days, but... How hard can it be to flip through a comic on the rack only in its 'teens' for numbering, see something you like enough to try it out, with the clincher being a $10 trade handy to get you really started at the beginning? Sure, Imperium has a richer background linked to the Harbinger story, but Imperium #1-4 really has enough in it to get you into the series, IMO.

As to the original post by DBS - very well said, sir. People beg for quality and yet won't try it out when so many sing its praises? I don't get it. :? :!:

There's no rhyme or reason why some things catch on and others don't. If Imperium was a pure Indy/creator owned title, maybe it would have drawn a different crowd.

Aside from the fact that a brilliant book like Imperium is ending, my extra bit of sadness is the fact Dinesh replied to my Deluxe Hardcover query on Twitter, stating there are no plans for a hardcover release of Imperium.

I get the feeling it might be due to Imperium's low sales numbers, but I do hope an eventual hardcover collection is released. This series was too good not to be in an oversized hardcover format.

I think this was the book where VEI exceeded the original Valiant. It was a risky book with some great talent behind it, and even though the sales numbers didn't work out this was still one of my favorite comics of all-time.
