What Valiant comics have legal issues re:reprints

Post by John Pannozzi »

Out of all the 1990s and early 2000s Valiant and Acclaim comics, which ones would VEL (since they're now an LLC, and no longer Inc.) have to work out rights issues to reprint?

Off the bat:

* Anything with Solar, Magnus, or Turok in the title

* Any miniseries or oneshot featuring an intercompany crossover (like the ones with Predator, Nexus, Iron Man, and the Image Universe characters)

* Any licensed titles (Nintendo, wrestling, FOX Kids, and so on)

* The Windjammer titles (owned by their respective creators)

Anything else? I believe that an issue of Shadowman guest starred Aerosmith, so I wonder if there would be legal issues to clear there.

So basically VEI can't reprint anything that nobody cares about anymore. Problem solved :thumb:

:funnypost:

I am sure they can reprint if they arrange royalties for use of properties.

Or if they gain the rights to use the properties ~ which has been snatched a few ties ~ only to end up in the hands of people who have no idea.

But money is money, if the rights holders have any concept of income, it is better to have someone use and hold them long term ~ rather than flippant use of their properties bringing short term gains.

Well, the simple, but useless answer is that it depends on whether the original contracts specifically mentioned bancruptsy or not. Only clue we have is what has been reprinted or not, and from that I would say that your list is spot on.

Where does Unity fall in that?

Could they reprint a hardcover and just eliminate the gold key 3 from any solicitations, covers, etc?

With Unity they could blur the images, or use pixelated images the gold key characters.
That solves the problem and everyone's happy.

Or a censored version, where panels are just blacked out :hm:

Alternatively, buy the VCS Unity hardcover, or the diamond trades, or original unity boxed set.
or full on splurge and spend the cash on the original floppies :thumb:

Unity doesnt make much sense to reprint much of the story centers around the gk3 and all the issues are easily available. Omnibus collections make more sense brcause they contain issues that are rarer/more expensive.

Agreed ... besides, the most committed and insane Valiant fan most likely has those issues already in their grubby hands! :D

I know I can get it. I'm just wondering about the reprint rights.

They wouldn't need to blackout panels. They've rerelease digital issues and collected issues with the GK3 in them. And they own the Unity IP. I just don't think they could use any of them in the cover image, or list their issues as being included. But they could say, "Collecting Unity Parts 1-14" and have a cover with just XO, A&A, EW, Harby, Shadowman, etc. Legally, that is.

It wouldn't be the same without those four issues. Too many gaps. The entire story centers around events that originate in books that are opposite of where VEI is heading so safe to say it will never happen unless VEI got the rights back and even then it would be last on VEI's to to list.
Dreamworks also now owns at least some of the gk3 so it's probably not going anywhere for decades if ever.

The characters can appear, but they can't be solicited. I believe.

The characters themselves do appear, and VEI has said they have the rights to do that. They can cannot reproduce the series with those characters however. In the Solar/XO crossover, only the XO issues are included in the Omnibus. The Solar issue(s) only get a synopsis page.
I wonder what it would be like to be a lonely, muck-encrusted monster? Probably be an improvement.

Im still waiting for the XO vol 2 omnibus. Any know if they will release one?

Could they make a 'chaos effect' omnibus?

Still, they should make the following omnibus;
Rai (or continue where the last trade left off at #8)
Hard Corps
Bloodshot

I really wish they could make a deal to print the gk3, ....solar omnibus would be great, ...and that whole rai and the future force and magnus war was good.
Its sad V1 folded before they could have produced trades like the companies do today.

Unity #25 has them credited as an LLC. I'm unsure if anything's changed since.

Any chance VEI ever reprints any of the other Acclaim stuff (in addition to the Q&W Omnibus)?

I'm pretty sure Shadowman by Ennis & Wood came out a few weeks ago. I bet they get around to reprinting more of the Acclaim stuff, there's just not a huge demand right now.

The Shadowman tpb is really good actually. The reprint issues were of course only ever going to be as good as they were originally, but it was great catching up on Deadside again, especially with the script for the final issue in there too!

Still puzzling as *SQUEE* in a lot of ways, but enjoyable nonetheless.
