Definitely. They just need to do something that will make noise.syzhang28 wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:19 pmAgree, can't be worse the DMG and hopefully better than Acclaim who at least gave us some good comics.ManofTheAtom wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:12 pmWell, sounds like Alien will be in charge of the publishing now. We have to hope they're better than Acclaim and SMG.syzhang28 wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:10 pmUnfortunate but not surprising. If you can't get comics right, you're clearly not anywhere near the level to approach movies. Acclaim was a case of someone valuing their own medium ahead of comics, and that was a mistake. DMG is a case of people that probably have no business being anywhere near the decisions that run a comic book publisher, let alone movies.ManofTheAtom wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:01 pmNo doubt. It's unfortunate that there hasn't been much follow through with that.Ryan wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 1:58 pm I think one of the reasons VEI rebooted and it's always a discussion is because one of the major economic reasons for a comic book publishing universe to exist (in the modern times) is to serve as a template and springboard for stories in other mediums. Any movie, streaming series, animated series, video game, etc. is going to start from the beginning and tell that story first. Not saying it's right, but that's a big part of why these things reboot.

Exactly. It's certainly a matter up for debate if VEI's reboot was right enough to be a template to launch a movie/etc multimedia universe. So many other factors also contribute.syzhang28 wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:10 pmUnfortunate but not surprising. Re: What I'd Like To See From VALIANT
To me a great model is Ed Brubaker's Captain America run. It wasn't a reboot, it fit in continuity and even pulled things out of deep continuity (Bucky) without being a slave to continuity. However it totally changed the style of Captain America comics by updating it to a more realistic spy/espionage tone without losing the fun part of super hero comics. The art was very good, but not overly illustrative or taking priority. The layouts were straightforward and clear. The story was the main priority and the art served it excellently. Even when a different artist had to fill in, they would follow the style established by Epting to keep it feeling consistent.
His run was then used as the template for the super successful Cap movies, which is why he even gets a cameo appearance.
Successful comic book run that became popular by word of mouth due to quality of writing and storytelling, not hype or manufactured 'collectability' then becomes one of the most globally successfully movie series of the 2010s. All without rebooting, just reimagining and using an evolved version of classical comic book storytelling.

That's just a creative revamp, which is definitely what VALIANT needs.Ryan wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 2:56 pm To me a great model is Ed Brubaker's Captain America run. They just need to have a solid foundation too. Brubaker's run was rooted in Cap's past.

Whatever Jim Shooter may do for VALIANT, if he ever were to do something, can't be as bad as when Stan Lee did the "Just Imagine..." line at DC.Chiclo wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 3:49 pmAnd Jim Shooter is the man to do it! I would love him back but it's gonna be just as bad. Man hasn't written anything good in decades. Anyone ever read The Seven? Or the Gold Key books at Dark Horse? Or that book he edited last year?ManofTheAtom wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 4:28 pmWhatever Jim Shooter may do for VALIANT, if he ever were to do something, can't be as bad as when Stan Lee did the "Just Imagine..." line at DC.Chiclo wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 3:49 pmAnd Jim Shooter is the man to do it! It is not fair to judge him by Seven because Kaballah is overused to the point of being predictable and trite as a mystical, sci-fi/fantasy premise.syzhang28 wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 7:58 pmI would love him back but it's gonna be just as bad. Re: What I'd Like To See From VALIANT
Except its not a premise, its a religion. And the comic was poor in the story fundamentals, not just the premise. And, it's not a one-off. His writing has been lacking for decades. No taking away his achievements in the day. He's just going the same way Stan Lee did.Chiclo wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 10:56 pmIt is not fair to judge him by Seven because Kaballah is overused to the point of being predictable and trite as a mystical, sci-fi/fantasy premise.syzhang28 wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 7:58 pmI would love him back but it's gonna be just as bad. I haven't read Seven and what did he edit last year? Is it hard to find a copy of Seven? Do you mean the concepts from the Kaballah have been used over and over in fiction to the point they've become tropes?Chiclo wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 10:56 pmIt is not fair to judge him by Seven because Kaballah is overused to the point of being predictable and trite as a mystical, sci-fi/fantasy premise.syzhang28 wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2023 7:58 pmI would love him back but it's gonna be just as bad.
