As a kid I didn't think his art was 'pretty' enough. As an adult I've grown to appreciate his storytelling ability and the way he was able to draw complex scenes in a way that made them easy to read. Way ahead of most Image artists that respect.

In hindsight, I think Bloodshot 1-17 hold up as among the best post-Unity runs. The Vanhook-Perlin-Dixon team made some awesome action comics. Would've liked to see that team have a 100 issue run.

For some pure Perlin, I recommend Conan #222 from 1989. Perlin wrote, penciled, and inked this stand-alone issue, the only writing of his I know of.

Even on the first page, Perlin's abilities are on full display. Complex scenes with multiple figures and multiple planes of action rendered with supreme clarity that the reader can grasp instantly.

Great interview, thanks for sharing. Ditko was another one whose love for comics came from reading the first Batman comics. They shared some similarities with their approach to storytelling as well.

Meat and potatoes is a good description. Don was a fundamental piece of Vh1.

I'm 99% sure I met Mr. Perlin at a comic convention. Class act, for sure. We'll miss you, Mr. Perlin!

I think of his work on Marvel US The Transformers and he was probably the first regular artist on that book after over a year of fill-in artists and/or maybe 2 or 3 issues, he defined the comic book look of The Transformers and stayed on for almost 2 years drawing some of the weirdest, best, and most awful stories in the history of the TF franchise (and that is saying something). I feel that looking back at his work at Marvel was and still is vastly under-rated some of that might been he never got a major run, with books like The Amazing Spider-Man, The Uncanny X-Men, The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, and so on he was either doing titles like The Transformers and Conan or second string titles like The Defenders and fill-ins when he jumped to Valiant it was he was finally unchained and able to show what he could really do and that he could hang with guys like BWS, Steve Ditko, and Bob Layton and show then rookies Joe Queasada and Jimmy Palimotti a thing or three.

Interesting that the published cover for Bloodshot #3 was actually inked by Chris Ivy. Looks like the exact same pencils that Branch inked, wonder if it was a try-out or Ivy re-did the inks after Branch's were rejected? Who knows.

This one hurt ... I had so many good interactions with him, he retired not too far from where I live and I would see him every now and then. Just a decent man and interesting as hell.

Another belated RIP - to another artist that I adored and practiced imitating as a kid. Primarily his run on Transformers - he still stands tall in my mind as a definitive artist in that entire franchise across all the various iterations over the years since.

Glad he was a big part of Valiants history as well.
