Well, ill make this short and sweet.
Talked to JJ Jackson about the counterfeit valiants.
had a phone call.
she said they are real, and they had her look at photos to compare the differences at the time.
she said the blue solar #1s are fake.. she went and watched all the key books being printed in person, no ink shortage or color variation..
She said the the sting to get the press workers were 2 different stories.
One story is workers were stealing books from the worksite, shes not sure if they were overprints or from the print run.
she told me fred pierce set up the sting with local authorities and busted them.
much later the counterfeits came..
they were digital files, scans, made for color separation.
they took the digital files and printed them with a webpress? dont know what this is.. but she said they were printed semi-professionally..
she said off colors and different paper stock..
she inspected the counterfeits personally..
she said she would be into making a video telling the whole story..

Dont know if the counterfeiters go busted, point is they exist, and she said yes they were going into back issues market when values were peaking..

So jim was mushing together two different stories, that's why things were off..

so, yes, there are counterfiet books out there

Are these contemporary counterfeits or a later creation? The process sounds later than 1991 (although Shooter says Shooter inspired some kind of digital colour sep process) but I cannot imagine a later time where Solar 1 would have been worth counterfeiting. Why not counterfeit dollar coins? About as worthwhile as counterfeiting Solar 1s at any time after 1994.

She said it was at their peak value? not sure exact time..
but she said the printer had giant huge color laser scanners that digital files were made on..
something about a rolling plate for each page that was made before they went to the printer, then those pages are scanned..
the files were hijacked.. and the counterfeits were made..

If anything, I would imagine that after confirmation, the counterfeits will be worth more than the genuine comics. Maybe prices will stabilise differently but it will basically be a newly discovered variant.

On a more serious note, it is a little early to take a victory lap. Much with the talking, not so much with the showing.

Some information I would like to know is:

What titles and issues?
How is the cover stock different?
Were there geographic areas of distribution?
How many were put out in the wild before being shut down?

I have inspected probably tens of thousands of books in my question for perfect copies. I have noticed slight differences in the coloring of covers, but that's true for most books of the period and earlier. Solar 1 has a variety of different blue hues. Some some of later issues of X-O and Shadowman have some pretty marked differences in the dark colors. However, I have not noticed a difference in the paper quality and type of V1 issues, save Rai 0.

I have a couple of Philippines Valiant books that I'm pretty sure are unauthorized. Of course, there is the "trash can." Other than that, nothing else immediately comes to mind.

I'd love to see some of these copies in the flesh.

They might be stolen and originally sold illegally (until the bad guys were caught), but the books themselves are not counterfeit in any way.

Yeah. And so we get tell of this and Fred says, "I'll take care of this." And so what he does is he gets the local police and the state police there, and they work out a sting. All right? And they pulled it off. This guy comes, and he thinks he's selling comics to some dealer for some fabulous price, and it's a sting. And they arrest him. They got him. And so I thought, wow, that's cool.

If there was a sting operation as Shooter suggests and local and state police were involved then there should be official records that list the evidence that was collected (i.e. the counterfeit comics).

Can't anyone from anywhere in the US just request a copy of the records from the Midwest state in question through the Freedom of Information Act or state equivalent if such a thing exists, then post it here?

That should have a list and photos of the comics that were seized, no?
