Pre-Unity/Unity Reprints?

Post by RyanMcLelland »

Forgive me if this is a question that’s already been asked.

With Alien/DMG under IDW who is owned by Penguin House who owns the Gold Key characters…

Are we finally able to get reprints of the early Valiant Magnus and Solar books? How about an original Unity Omnibus?

Seeing these old Unity collections (mine disappeared in the move) makes me wish to see an updated collection of some Valiant classics and it seems the stars are aligned to actually make it happen.

I would buy anything about these characters, sadly.

That would be cool. I've loved the new Compendium format for collecting big chunks of old comics for reasonable prices. Would love to see compendiums of all of pre-Unity, Unity, etc.

Looks like the Unity issues are in the new Harbinger Omnibus so it seems Valiant has no problem reporting Unity.

My guess would be that the only thing stopping a reprint of Unity are the issues of Solar and Magnus. They can reprint their appearances in other comics but not their series.

The Eternal Warrior Classic Omnibus Volume 1 reprints Unity chapters 2 and 10.

The Archer & Armstrong: The Complete Classic Omnibus and Archer & Armstrong: Revival reprint Unity chapters 3 and 11.

The X-O Manowar: Classic Omnibus Volume 1 reprints Unity chapters 5 and 13.

The Shadowman: Classic Omnibus Volume 1 reprints Unity chapters 6 and 14.

Seems like the only chapters they haven't reprinted are the ones that appeared in Rai, Harbinger, and the two issues of Unity.

Maybe? I mean IDW is under the umbrella of Random House/Golden Books who owns Magnus and Solar. Now with Valiant under Alien under IDW under Random House… they can work it out?

I've seen that hope mentioned before. Time will tell (and I don't mean Walter Black, whose handle here is Time Will Tell...).

Depends on if the demand is high enough and if the rights holders are just copyright/trademark trolls. Marvel has pulled this crap with the original US Transformers comics with Circuit Breaker, and the Neo Knights being owned by Marvel (even though Circuit Breaker has only appeared in one issue of Secret Wars II) and even though now they only own the rights to name "Circuit Breaker" and her general appearance. Hasbro owns her secret identity and origin story. At one point Hasbro brought her back in Transformers: Shattered Glass (the TF version of Star Trek's Mirror Universe) but changed her so much that she basically became a new character, and the Neo Knights haven't done anything outside of the original US The Transformers Marvel comics. Now Marvel has the rights to these characters not doing a damn thing with them other than wanting truly outrageous amounts of money from companies that reprint those books. I can understand them wanting a lot of money to reprint #3 because of Spider-Man and Nick Fury, and S.H.I.E.L.D. making guest starring and making a cameo respectfully, but Circuit Breaker could've been an interesting antagonist for Iron Man and the Avengers and even had a redemption arc where she would join the Avengers to help destroy Ultron.
Know this: I would rather be hated for being honest for my opinions, than being loved as a liar!

I imagine it would have to begin with someone from Alien exploring the possibility and, likely, acquiring the license just like they did the one for VALIANT from DMG.

If Dynamite could afford it and get it, does anything prevent Alien from doing it?

It depends on how much the license is and when Dynamite had the license, they could've the money to afford it. IIRC Alien was hit very hard by the bankruptcy of Diamond and didn't they said that the money Diamond owed them was what they planned to use to pay for new projects, creators, and look into new licenses, and also the IP holders of the GK3 were/are known to be hands on which drove creators at Dark Horse and Dynamite crazy with constant creative interference because whoever held the rights at the time were next to impossible to please.

Yeah, Shooter had more of a free reign than those that followed. That was the proverbial lightning in a bottle VALIANT captured in the '90s, the freedom to do as they pleased with someone else's IP.
