"Armor X"-O Ripoff

What do you think of Armor X?

A very cool, nuanced story with subtext that Byrneout doesn't understand.

A cheap ripoff of X-O Manowar redeemed only by Andy Smith's art.

"Armor X"-O Ripoff

Post by Byrneout »

So, on the recommendation of a friend who knew I liked Valiant, I just read the first three issues of Armor X.

It is, quite possibly, the most blatant ripoff of X-O Manowar that I've ever seen.

Here is the "short list" of similiarities:

1. The armor is of Alien origin, and decides to bond with a native instead of one of its own race.

2. The armor is sentient.

3. The armor "flows" on to its wearer.

4. When dormant, the armor flows back into a ball shaped form.

5. The wearer of the armor refers to it as his "new skin".

6. Aliens who live amongst us and appear normal are trying to retrieve it.

7. The visual design of the armor is VERY reminiscent of the VH-2 Manowar armor.

8. The armor is capable of repairing human tissue, correcting eyesight, etc.

Those few elements of the book that aren't sheared directly from the flank of the X-O Manowar concept are just utter dreck. The protagonist was on his way to shoot up his high school's prom when he found the armor, and seemingly has NO redeeming qualities whatsoever (of course, we can expect him to somehow become a virtuous champion of good at some point, I would expect). The armor requires external energy sources for "food", and the armor also has a voice that we hear throught the series. And although the art is solid, the dialogue, pacing, and stereotypical characters come across as forced. We have the misfit loner, the mean jocks, and the one jock with a heart of gold who wants to reach out to the loner.

The sad thing is that it's Andy Smith art - and I rather enjoy his art, but I find it hard to support this title. *sigh*

Am I overanalyzing this? Am I overreacting? These things are possible, but tell me what you think by responding to the poll above.

I abstain from voting because I haven't read a single issue of it. However, when I saw the solicitation in Previews, "X-O ripoff" was my first thought.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Just because you haven't read it, doesn't mean you can't vote. There have been write-ups on the Internet about this comic's basic premise. I vote a blatant X-O rip-off.

I haven't read it either, but everything I've seen and heard of it so far screams rip-off. What’s next... a guy who smashes robots with his bare hands called Mag-X?

CBG mentioned this new series, and it looked pretty bad. Its a shame that people can get away with copying something as great as Valiant and sell a new, crappy version.

If it helps you enjoy it (being an AS fan), I'm pretty sure Andy owns 50% of that book.

John: lol, Great man.... by virtue that Andy Smith drew Quasar and I obviously can't stop talking about that book on this forum, his Armored character is now awesome in my book (SEE, guys, Quasar IS everywhere!)

Byrneout: I'm going to steal your post and paste it onto the Invincible Ironman Forum under the "Other Armored Heroes" section. I haven't read the title, so your insight will be appreciated there!

Actually, that DOES make me feel better. That way, I could see it as Andy trying to tell some of the stories he didn't get to do with X-O, and it takes on a whole new significance.

Thanks, John!

Ric,

There you go, now you are a celebrity on the Invincible Ironman message Board. Good job! I'll quit now before I somehow hijack this thread too.

Yeah didn't you know that an open forum makes celebrities out of all of us. Hell, George Dubya himself might be a closet Ironman/ Valiant fan and might haunt these boards as "Da Prez" or something.... hahahahah
