...they have their "ending now" section on the homepage, and have "silver age" comics listed, yet have a picture of astonishing x-men #2 (i think #2) and a 90's copy of wolverine :D

what i love is when i'm cruising around looking for a book and see a "x-o manowar gold 9.8" listed with a BIN of $40.

so i click the link and see that the book isn't slabbed...so i send the seller an e-mail, asking whether or not the wrong pic was put up and whether or not the actual book is slabbed. because you know, sometimes in haste the wrong pic can get submitted...hell even i've done it.

then i get accosted for questioning his business practices and wanting to know why he, as a comic collector for 25 years, isn't able to have to ability to determine the number grades like cgc/pgx/cgg.

well mainly due to the fact that they're an uninterested party...they don't care if your book is a 10.0 or a 2.5, they get paid either way...i reply

the seller, on the other hand, is very much interested in what the book grades out to because a 2.5 makes a hell of a lot less money then a 10.0.

and also, i'm a potential buyer...i'll ask any *SQUEE* questions i want if i'm about to give you money for your product. someone needs to work on their customer service skills methinks.

you would've thought i was accusing this guy of being in al queda for gods sake.

then i get a profanity laced reply about my low i.g. (that's right...supergenius questions my IQ by misspelling it IG...what a tard) and how his kid is in the hospital and he's on xanax and all this other *SQUEE*.

i'm like...all i did was ask an simple, courteous and non-threatening but direct question about your book...you went apesh1t on me fella...not the other way around.

the bottom line is that he deliberately misrepresented his wares and got *SQUEE* at me when i called him on it.

socrates-comics, by the way...my gut says something shady is up there.

if there's anyone out there who're buddies or anything with him then i'm sorry. he might be a hell of a guy...but he just talked to me like a giant @sshole.

usually when you question someone like that and they get defensive it means they've done something they shouldn't have...i say buyer beware.

I'm not surprised you had a problem with Socrates comics. Almost all of his books are way overpriced, because he apparently thinks his grading skills should be trusted as much as CGC. He always uses their grading scale. I have bought at least one book from him and thought the grading was accurate, but I'm not going to pay slabbed book price for non-slabbed books.

he's said in a later e-mail that one of his kids was badly hurt and in the hospital...but how many times have we seen the sympathy card played around here...i meant to ask if there was rock climbing involved.

anyway, if it's true then i feel bad for my part in the conflaguration thats ensued...but it's not cool for him to misplace that anger and *SQUEE* on me...i didn't cause his situation.

it'd be like getting a speeding ticket on the way home and then breaking your wife's nose when you got there because you were mad at yourself...it's just not right.

it especially rubbed me the wrong way when he basically told me i had no right to question anything he did...i'm like, uh...i have every right dude. i'm a potential customer.

if you expect me to buy from you then you need to be prepared for any question i might ask...if i had been rude then i could have seen him going off on me, but that wasn't the case.

so anyway, he's realized that this has gone too far and sent an apology. so we'll see what happens next.

but the bottom line is that despite his problems i didn't cause them...if he isn't professional enough to answer an e-mail from a potential customer without ranting, raving and cursing at them then he needs to get someone else to do it for him.

I agree, it's fine and dandy that he apologized, but this just shows you the type of behavior you might encounter if you ever run into problems with an auction of his. I just don't need that kind of aggravation.

When I ask a seller a question and I get a short smarmy reply like I'm bothering them I won't even bother to bid.

What can you say, some people just go bonkers when you ask a question about what their selling. That usually tells me theres probably a problem with their listings in the 1st place.

A lot of people also tend to write cgc a dozen times in their descriptions in order to get a search to pick it up. Usually they'll say their books should be graded by cgc, or they will say look for their future sales of cgc books. Things like that. It gets annoying sometimes.

I agree. Writing "cgc" and "afa" in non-graded auctions is just wrong. This always earns a seller a spot on my "People To Never Buy From" lists. If you need to be a creep to sell an item, you don't need my money.

And then there's the famous "CGC?" like adding a question mark does anything.

It's true. Some people just aren't smart sellers. They try to compensate for a lack of aptitude by stooping to childish tactics that annoy much more than they sell.

Couple of things...

1. eBay has GOT GOT GOT to install a "blocked sellers" list for buyers. They won't, because they're stupid, arrogant, and lazy, but if they can have blocked BIDDERS...they should have blocked SELLERS. I don't wish to wade through mounds of CRAP from sellers who are vicious, arrogant, and snotty. I want to not only be able to block AWFUL sellers who change their names, but also JUNK sellers who list nothing but junk, often at stupid prices, and I ESPECIALLY want to block UK sellers. Why? Well, just because the S&H from Europe is usually prohibitive. ;)

2. I just had a run in with a guy called Kevinsbbcards. I asked him..politely...why he charged $2 additional ABOVE AND BEYOND the initial S&H for EACH INDIVIDUAL COMIC. I just wanted to know if he was covering his eBay and paypal fees that way, because we all know that it doesn't cost $2 extra to ship additional comics.

Example: if I win 10 comics from him, the S&H is $23.95. For 10 comics? Wow.

He replied with this...no joke:

"1. I ship first class rate, and it varies. (Actually, once you get to 13 oz, it's Priority, and the only thing that changes is the zone.)

2. The cost of my bags is $13 per 100, plus tax or shipping, whichever. (Despite the fact that he can buy bags at comicsupply.com, among others, for $2.79 plus $5.69 postage for the ONE bag, for a total of $8.48 per 100)

3. The cost of my boards is $28 per 100, etc. (Despite the fact that you can get 100 acid free Silver boards for $4.79, plus $5.69 to ship the ONE stack of boards, for a total of $10.48 per 100.)

4. The cost of the filler boards I use to pack is 19 cents each, and I frequently use two PER COMIC in my packing. (And he's claiming he pays 19 cents EACH in bulk for cardboard 1/8" fillers....uh huh)

5. The boxes I use to ship 1 comic are $1.96. The boxes I use to ship multiple comics are $2.96. (Despite that fact that this is a ripoff price.)"

I pointed out that if these numbers were true, he was getting ripped off, and pointed him in the direction of several cheaper suppliers, MUCH CHEAPER, and that I, myself, would be glad to supply him with cheaper supplies. I mean...41 cents for ONE BAG AND ONE BOARD?

Yeah.

Right.

So, of course he got hostile and brought up all sorts of "numbers" which he used to justify his "costs", each more bogus than the last, and I told him he was a profiteer and that he was a used car salesman talking to me like I was a poor old woman who knew nothing.

He then listed all his fees associated with listing, which I corrected for him, and then said "oh, that's my average for the last YEAR!" which may or may not be correct, but we're looking at NOW, not what was sold in April.

He accused me of being a spammer for comicsupply.com (I have never bought anything from them, nor do I know them, nor am I connected in any way...they were just an easy resource to prove this guy had stupid numbers.)

He replied that "no, it's $12.27 for the bags" and I said "YES, if you use THE MOST EXPENSIVE PREMIUM SERVICE to get them to you!"

Which, of course, is intellectually dishonest in a discussion like this.

In any event, it got stupid, as these things do, and Mr. Kevinsbbcards couldn't even decipher the mystery that is comicsupply.com and said "They sell TEN boards for $4.79, and call them MAILERS, and they sell backing boards for $17 per 50, and therefore their cost was EVEN HIGHER THAN HIS ORIGINAL COST" (despite the fact, of course, that he was LOOKING AT THE WRONG DAMN ITEMS) and then said "so please stop" as if *I* was the one who was totally wrong about his numbers.

I pointed out once again that he was looking at the wrong damn items, that he must be blind, or *SQUEE*, or both, and that he can't do basic math to save his life, and to please stop.

Yay!

Too bad, too, because he's got some decent comics for sale...but the "$2 per comic" additional charge is just stupid and greedy.

Some would say "adjust your bids down $2, and you're fine" but I have a VERY hard time supporting someone's profiteering.

I like when a seller lists about a 100 auctions each for a differnt DD book...then posts no scan of the book...even though the description references his huge scans and how great the books are....then when you email him about a scan he replies after the auction has ended with "I dont waste my time scanning comics." Oh ok...my bad...hell his template that he uses even has a place for a scan and it was just blank..
