Big Apple Con 2006: Greg's journal - Monday (#5)
Monday, April 3, 2006
Monday began in Wakamba, the Latin bar we'd spent a few hours talking Valiant among the fans who didn't have to head home earlier on Sunday. After Wakamba, we stopped by a Wendy's, where most of us had a frosty (chocolate ice cream). Justin expressed a desire to find a 24hour Rite-Aid, which we found easily, sometime around 3am. After his purchase of Q-tips and astringent, and several of us purchased chocolate milk, we stood on the curb and shared the Entenmann's Raspberry Twist Danish that I talked Dinesh into buying. (Weird, that link points to Amazon.com... I wouldn't think of Amazon when buying danishes.) Luckily, Dinesh really liked it... or else I would have probably felt bad for making him waste his money. (I think they're really good, try one if you haven't before.)
Getting back to the hotel, we said our goodbyes and tried to get some sleep before our flights. Justin used his sleeping bag, and Zack claimed the air mattress that Craig had been using in previous nights. Zack also procured the first pillow of his trip, since there were more guys than pillows and he had been using a folded towel previously. Don't feel too bad for Zack, though, because he had the entire king-sized bed to himself when he slept during the day while the rest of us were in the convention.
Justin's cellphone alarm was the first wake-up notification we had on Monday. I'm pretty sure I heard "she's a brick... house..." a half-dozen times, while Justin claims he only heard it once or twice. I'm pretty sure he's able to hit "snooze" without realizing he's done it. At random times on Monday, I was caught singing "she's a brick... house..." because it was stuck in my head all day. After showers and packing, we headed down to the lobby to settle the bill. Surprisingly, it was correct, which I didn't expect after the wrong invoice when we checked in, the cash payment for the first night, and the brief loss of the hotel room on the second day.
Within a minute of checking out, we were loading a taxi van with our bags and heading to LaGuardia. The four of us were able to split the ride for $35 including tip, not bad at all. Brian's flight was first, and his airline was in the main concourse, so we grabbed a table in the same mall/foodcourt I had visited on Thursday. Justin made a few phonecalls, and Zack had a couple slices of La Famiglia pizza, while Brian and I figured out what time he should head towards his gate. Around 1pm, we said goodbye to Brian and boarded a bus to the U.S. Airways terminal, where Justin and Zack were scheduled to leave at 3pm.
The free buses at LaGuardia make a loop to reach all parking lots and other terminals. Even though U.S. Airways was in the next terminal to the left, it was too far to walk, and so we rode the full loop to the right before arriving. Another hour was spent in U.S. Airways terminal with Justin and Zack before they headed to their plane and I re-boarded the free bus. Once again, my own terminal was directly to the left, but I had to ride the whole loop to the right before I reached the Delta baggage check.
Though I should have been tired of eating pizza, there weren't any other lunch options that appealed to me, so I had another slice of Sbarro's at the start of my three hours in LaGuardia's Delta terminal. Just before 4:00pm, I checked to see if I could get an earlier flight into Atlanta, since I would rather spend several hours in their terminals (which are much, much larger) than to spend another two hours in LaGuardia. Unfortunately, I had checked my bags already, and security doesn't allow anyone to take a flight separated from their bags.
In the next two hours, I spent a few minutes on the phone, and worked a little in a Sudoku book that I picked up in the airport bookstore. My flight from LaGuardia to Atlanta was very shaky, so much so that the pilot didn't allow the flight attendants to unbuckle their own seatbelts for more than five minutes the whole trip. I was happy to be on the ground in Atlanta.
Originally, my flight from Atlanta to Little Rock was supposed to be in another terminal from the arrival into Atlanta. Once I landed, I saw that the flight was moved to the same terminal, which was good because I had less than an hour to get there. I made it to the new gate in no time, and even caught about ten minutes of the NCAA basketball final on the TV in a restaurant near the gate.
From Atlanta to Little Rock there was no problem at all, with the flight even landing a little early. I called my wife to come pick me up at baggage claim, and headed to grab my bags. They never appeared. After making my claim for the two missing bags and getting a tracking number from the office, I saw my wife pulling up to the curb outside. Thankfully, the bags went missing on the way home, rather than on the way to NYC. I'd much rather "do without" in my own house than in a hotel 1,000 miles away.
By midnight I was home, without my bags maybe, but home. The trip was outstanding, and I'm very glad that I was able to make it. From seeing the guys from the board and the artists who made Valiant what it was, even seeing New York, it was a great experience. The First Annual ValiantFans.com East Coast Meeting was officially over for me. The trip would end for my bags on Tuesday evening, when they arrived safe and sound.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.
