CGC...what's the point?

Post by stone384 »

I have no CGC'd books and I don't really plan on getting any. I have a handful of mid to lower grade keys and I thought (briefly) about having them CGC'd soley for preservation. I like the idea of a (somewhat) objective 3rd party grading them to eliminate any possible bias on my part and I also like the cases with the microwhatever paper to help preserve the graded condition. I have since rethought that, especially when factoring the cost :o .Sooo why does someone get a book CGC'd or why would you buy one? Is it solely for resale? What other reasons would someone want a CGC'd book? I don't 'get' why someone would want a CGC collection if they don't plan on selling them.

Mainly for sales. If you are keeping the book, just keep them in mylar.

I agree and disagree at the same time. I have my CGC set because you cannot really tell what condition CGC thinks your books are in until the are looked at by CGC.

I started with a set of raw books that I had from back in the day, ones that I had upgraded again and again. They were perfect. I sent them in expecting 9.8s. I doubt 25% of them were 9.8s.

Now that I know what to look for, I can do better than that. But, that minty raw set you have in the closet is just another run of 8.5s to 9.2s to me until they have been slabbed.

You collect CGC books for the "certainty" of it. Of course, it is a powerful selling tool as well.

So you kinda use CGC as a way to improve your own skills at grading?

Hmmm :hm: very interesting. Never thought of that angle :thumb:

To each his own.

See, the way I see it is... why the hell isn't everyone collecting cgc'd books.

I am SOOOOO sick of buying raw "NM" crap on e-bay that it makes me sick. I am a perfectionist and would WAY rather pay the price for what I want than to spend 10 x's that trying to obtain one copy in that condition.

And lets not even mention the fact that the books just pop out in color and clarity in the cgc's wells. Protection is another great reason to have them as well. And yes... when you go to sell... no one can argue with you when you say your 9.8 copy of "whatever" is in nm/m condition.

We won't mention the word addiction....

I agree with CKB.... everything you have in the closet is 8.5 to 9.2 until proven otherwise in a court of CGC. lol

By some odd chance you have some 9.8 valiants... I would gladly trade you 2 copies of the same issue for that copy.... since you don't prefer cgc'd comics. :P

Well, improving your skills at CGC-style grading is a by-product of playing the CGC game. It's a necessity unless you have unlimited funds. I do not want to send a $2 VF copy of Magnus 3 in and pay the $4 pre-screen fee just to give the book a tour of Sarasota.

I submit to CGC to upgrade my own CGC set and sell the duplicates to help to pay for what I keep.

stone384 wrote:Sooo why does someone get a book CGC'd or why would you buy one?
Several reasons.
1) I don't collect books for their grades. Raw books are reading books. CGC is another animal and I'm a completionist.
1a) CGC certified books that are high in the census are so nice (or should be) that it would be a pity to touch them
1b) Getting a complete set would be so cool
1c) It is a manufactured collectible

2) Though the slab is in the way, I still get to learn a bit about grading.

3) This one is somewhat invalidated but did govern me in the beginning. I thought buying certified books gave a safety. Among many beauties, I now have two unfortunate books that are obviously overgraded. But combined with buying from a trust-worthy seller (either one who does his own pre-screening, or one who would not resell an obviously overgraded CGC book), it still feels better with certified comics.

CGC is for reselling books mainly...

Secondly it is for resto check on keys...

Thirdly is for wacky completionist

Oh and it is a piece of mind thing for buying big books online.

So if you have a HG key that you bought of the rack yourself just bag it. No need for CGC. If you bought a HG key raw on ebay send it to cgc for the resto check. If you want to sell your HG OO key then slab it and toss it on ebay for the highest price. If you are a wacky completionist then slab away and try and amass the greatest registry set... :thumb:

That's right...didn't CGC catch a couple of knuckleheads who werw notorious for selling restored books as NM...? For me peace of mind would be a big factor in CGCing HG keys. Good points

Guilty as charged. I don't think of it that way, but most psychopaths think they are the sanest peole on the planet. :P

There were some good points made since my last post. I wouldn't be doing it if I wanted a VF or better set. I'm confident enough to leave those in mylar. Or even if I wanted a 9.4 or better set of some modern title that I was picking up off the rack. Wanting 9.8 examples of all the books? They just have to be in slabs to have a clue.

Weird you say that... I am NOT a big "graded book" fan, yet I have a CGC 9.6 set of Rai #'s 1-4 (need a #5, too)

What? It was a "zing".... not a great "zing," that's why it didn't get big and bold (spicy?) but it definitely got the "zing" it deserved.

My two cents....

I will never pay to have a book graded by CGC, but I don't have any golden or silver age books that are worth money.

I will continue to buy and have bought gold/red/incentive valiant variants in CGC because I am guaranteed that the book is NM at 9.6, and I never plan on cracking the slab because I have already read the story.

I figure if I need the book to complete my collection and can get in CGC (guaranteed NM) then why not? I have plenty of raw golds but I took a risk every time that they were NM based on the sellers description.

Gold books and limited variants are perfect things for the CGC case, for a myriad of reasons. Good call.
