Isn't there supposed to be an option about ice cream? Sorry if this noob is confused.
My favorite gimmick cover was the cover of Wolverine 50. Those claw marks through the file folder were sweet!
My favorite Valiant gimmick (other than golds, and they don't really count) was the cover of Eternal Warrior 35. When I got a copy, I saw the warning cover, and I thought, "oh, whatever. They're just trying to make it all cool."
Then I opened it up, and there was that arm in a pool of blood, and it was pretty sweet.

I love gimick covers !!
The best Valiant is the "Peter is Gay" Pink Harbinger 0 . .
2nd would be Bloodshot 1 . . .(love that BWS)
Let's see . . . The Tick #2 non die cut cover is great . . .
There are a few Thanos / Silver Surfer that I really like . . .
and just about any embossed cover . . . it's like finger candy . .

Hmm
Do you mean a free gimmick cover, or one you have to pay extra for? I'm all for free gimmicks (Magnus/Rai flip books, etc.). Or a special cover to a supersized issue, if it has to cost more (Solar 10).
But a more expensive cover for a regular-sized comic? No thanks.
But I did vote for an "occasional" gimmick.

I think gimmick covers are ok sometimes, but when they go overboard I get a bit frustrated. It's ok to have a number one or zero issue like that, maybe even a major milestone with a character... but, to do it for no reason just seems ridiculous. I think Gold Magnus 21 was better than foil cover Magnus 25, and I think that when they relaunched, the alternate cover number ones were ok, but wouldn't have cared for anything fancy. These were established characters most of them for the most part, and wouldn't have felt they warranted anything special on the covers like foil, etc. But, I'm really glad they don't do much of that now. But, at least when they do it's an incentive cover so that it adds collectability. How many of us have MANY copies of X-O 0???

I'm torn on this one. I like the initial Valiant gimmick that added something to the product like the Alpha and Omega insert, the Magnus cards, the Rai flip book. When it became chromium for chromiums sake it became a bit much.
I hate that marvel seems to choose the better cover as a limited variant so that the comic stores and ebay sellers can gouge the fan for wanting it. I really hope that the new Valiant if we ever see it makes smart choices on these kinds of things.

My favorite gimmicks, if you can call them that, were the Unity covers. I remember in middle school going to the hardware store with my folks and finding some way that I could display comics on my wall so that I could put them together to form a "poster."
In case anyone is interested we used the seam channel for FRP board to support the bottom of the books (bagged and boarded) and fishing line to across the fronts to keep them from falling forward.
I think by my sophomore year I decided that there was no way I was going to get a girl to take me seriously and had to finally put them all back in the boxes.
Looking back on it, I should have saved myself the time and left them on the wall.

Favourite gimmick VALIANT cover? Solar 10 is very cool - but is it a gimmick? Bear with me: no variant produced; it is art reproducible without a fifth ink or weird chromium 'paper', so is it a gimmick in that sense? If Solar 10 qualifies then that is my nomination, otherwise X-O 15 (pink) as it was the first VALIANT variant I picked up (by accident no less).
Favourite gimmick non-VALIANT cover? not yet here but I am looking forward to the 8 panel/page fold out cover for Ultimates2 #13. I ahve checked it out online and - wow.
Honourable mentions (not a gimmick): any book with a card-stock cover (Virgin scores highly for this); any Alex Ross cover; Static 25 (because of the cover that should have been printed - stupid DC); nice 'dress' - VALIANT later books with the border (yes I know it cuts down the art but I still like it), Milestone did a very similar thing, Dark Horse used the city emblems and so on; the digital painted colouring on the Ultimate line (especially earlier issues).
Dis-honourable mentions: 2 for Malibu (and not Ultraverese!) - the Ferret one-shot cover (and book!) cut to follow face contours; the infamous laser beam hole cover of Protectors.

VEI - I look forward to you one day publishing MORE than 9-10 books per month

Yeah, I would hate to see them do what Marvel and DC are doing with the variant covers. I think some sort of membership system would be cool so the new VU can reward the fans instead of letting LCS owners bleed us to death on the variants.dellamorte wrote:I'm torn on this one. gimmicks
My favorite Valiant cover period was Solar 10. It made you want to pick it up as soon as you saw it and that is something special. I felt the same way when I saw Rai 0 for the first time. I would have loved to see a Rai 0 variant cover with glossy white cardstock and no logo/price etc. Just the white, black & red.
I liked the Wolverine 145 cover with foil claws where Wolverine got his adamantium claws back because the cover tied in with the story. And I love the "bone claws" error variant of Wolverine 145 where he still has white bone claws on the cover instead of adamantium
