The ten most important panels in VH1...

Post by Shakespeare »

...and you get to help decide what they are! Below I have seven candidates, but as I’m only confident in four of them. So, as you all suggest panels and as we get a general consensus, we’ll eventually have the top ten most important panels from VH1.

From my selection below you’ll notice a couple of obvious omissions…the eternal brothers’ origin as told in Timewalker, and the end of X-O #68. I’ve omitted them because I don’t like them :) but if they are voted in, so be it.

Of course, MAJOR SPOILERS below, for those of you who haven’t read all of VH1. So viewer beware.

#1 VH1 = Solar
<img src='http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-3/1 ... rior-2.jpg' width=350 height=375 >

From Eternal Warrior #2. I consider the above panel to be the most important in the Valiant Universe. It basically explains why VH1 is different from our world, and that Solar created the eternal brothers, geomancers, and probably harbingers as well. VH1 is all because of Solar.

#2 and #3 Bridging Gold Key
<img src='http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-3/1 ... olar-2.jpg' width=465 height=458 >

<img src='http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-3/1 ... nus-16.jpg' width=350 height=511 >

From Solar #2 and Magnus #16. These two panels are so important because they bridge Gold Key and Valiant. It explains why, in a quasi-realistic universe, Solar would wear spandex, and it explains something Gold Key never did...how a human could be "trained" to make his skin as hard as steel. Score two for Shooter.

#4 The unbelievable energies
<img src='http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-3/1 ... nus-21.jpg' width=565 height=573 >

From Magnus #21. Yes, I can believe the psionic energy from harbingers, and the very scientifically-based powers of Solar, but Geomancers and Necromancers always bugged me. They just reeked of too much magic in a science-based universe. Even though it's a post-Unity panel, I believe it explains something pre-Unity, the Geomancers. (If I ever meet Shooter, I'd love to see exactly how he would have explained the Geomancers.)

#5 Bloodshot is a Harbinger
<img src='http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-3/1 ... erse-1.jpg' width=750 height=481 >

From Secrets of the Valiant Universe #1. Everyone else became a Speedshot, but not Bloodshot. Why? Because he could unconsciously control the nanites, and at the same time they triggered his Harbinger ability. I always liked that they made us thing that it was the nanites allowing him to control machines, when in truth he was controlling the nanites.

#6 Armstrong is the Eternal Geomancer
<img src='http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-3/1 ... nus-45.jpg' width=504 height=318 >

When they revealed this, I almost felt like I was back in Shooter's world (you may not agree). It just seemed to tie everything together so well, as Armstrong seems to have the same happy-go-lucky attitude as Buck did. Of anything late VH1 did, this just seemed to make the most sense.

#7 We will explain things with science
<img src='http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-3/1 ... nger-5.jpg' width=455 height=447 >

From Harbinger #5. This panel always stuck with me. It tells me "we're going to be sticking with science to explain what happens in the VH1." Sure, Solar had used some technobabel, but this told me in simple terms just what rules this universe was going to use.

Cool subject. Highly subjective...

Here's my favorite, Magnus 2, page 17:

It's when Magnus gets the key to genocide by seing that W23 has tiny vibrations. It's a turning point in the Steel Nation story and a defining moment both for Magnus and W23.

cool topic....

how do you get the pannels?

do you have to scan your actual comic book on a scaner? Doesn't that bend the spine to much (like I care, but I'm just curious)

Not sure who would agree that it is a "Panel" but what about the cover to Solar #10? The idea that that darkness is where Seleski left his world and entered ours? Isn't that truly the "Origin" of the universe, in a way? It has to be among the most important, I think.

Would the poster be as good a representation, or is that in the "old world"?

Surprised no one has mentioned the Elvis/Hitler thing from Turok. Now THAT was a revelation.

I'm cheating a bit, since this is three panels in succession...

...but it's hard to find a single panel that represents this...:

Solar #8 Alpha & Omega insert (final page)

Image

Dr. Phil Seleski explains the universe to his colleague, Dr. Erica Pierce.
(Story takes place prior to the events of Solar #1)

:thumb:

The next "panel" is the first page of the Alpha & Omega storyline in Solar #9.

It's a good "single panel" choice, but I prefer the previous series where Dr. Pierce isn't afraid,
and Dr. Seleski agrees to explain.

Well, sure, if you want to cheat ;)

I'm partial to the big page...it not only shows Solar making a huge mistake by showing Erica too much, but also explains the back door that Erica eventually uses that relates to Unity...and Unity is very big.

Thoughts?

I forgot about this panel too. I must have read this panel a dozen times back when I was 12. It really is a fundamental explanation of the "science" behind a lot of the Valiant Universe, and it helps set up the transformation of Erica Pierce to Mothergod.

And it shows how FRICKEN' COOL Solar is.

Hey magnusr, could I suggest the left panel

<img src='http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-3/1 ... agnus2.jpg' width=600 height=296 >

since it has most of the dialogue. The right one doesn't really hold its own as a single panel.

I think I'll have to nix that one, since it's a cover.

You're right. Knowing the situation, the right panel is a stronger moment, but it doesn't hold its own. Left one sounds good.

Hey all, sorry I haven't updated the list with the proposed panels, but my company just blocked "personal storage" sites, so I can't access villagephotos right now. Will try from dial up (shudder) at home.
