Planet Comicon 2007!

According to their website, Jim Lee has agreed to appear at Planet Comicon 2007! Also on the bill are David Prowse (the REAL Darth Vader), Richard Hatch (of BSG fame), David Petersen (Mouse Guard), Herb Trimpe, Don Rosa (the Duck Man!), Angel Medina (Spawn, Spider-Man), and many more! This is always a great show, and if you're close to the Kansas City area, I highly recommend it. Barring a major disaster (hey.....it's what I do) I'll be there glowing with joy!

It was a fun show, just smaller than usual. Not a huge number of CGC stuff like there was two years ago, but some was there. Overall, I've got to say I was disappointed a bit. I really thought a name like Jim Lee would bring in some really good dealers, but no such luck. Lots of the locals were there, and I don't meant o tknock them or their stock at all, but I was hoping for more. No Robert Bierbohm (sp?), no Motor City Comics, not even Chuck Rozanski roaming around trying to fill his backstock.

Enough of the bad.

Don Rosa was a blast to chat with and my wife bought a ton of his prints. Herb Trimpe was a complete gentleman and he and his wife (I assume they were married, she was handling the money) acted as excited to see the fans as the fans were to see them. A side note here. I got it from the man himself, the pronunciation is "trimpy" but there'll be more on Mr. Trimpe later. David Petersen was congenial as ever with lighter crowds at his booth than in SDCC, leading me to believe Mouse Guard may have cooled a bit. I didn't meet Jim Lee until Sunday afternoon, a buddy wanted a book signed, so I waited til the lines were light. Mr. Lee was obviously tired and just signed books and passed us along. Not rude, just tired. I can't blame the guy, he's been signining for two days.

No really big scores for me this time. I was actually looking for an FF #2 or Avengers #1. I came away with about a half dozen Captain Atoms by Ditko, some variants I didn't even know existed, and some art.

It was fun, just not as much fun as I anticipated. Hopefully it's because there was a problem with the venue last year, causing a cancellation. I like to think next year will be back up to speed or even better!

I had a great time at Planet Comicon this year. At first I too thought it was smaller but I'm not sure. I talked to four artist there and they thought it was as big as it was two years ago. I'm not sure.

I did get to meet Tony Moore and talk to him. He signed all my Walking Dead books and my Pope books and was very nice. My daughter got a great Zombie Sketch from him. In fact my daughter was able to walk around the place and get a total of 17 sketches. Only one repeat sketch, Rich Buckler. She wanted a Thing and then a Wolverine. He was kind enough to do one on each day for her. For a nine year old she really took to the scene and went to each artist that she liked and asked them if they could do a sketch for her. My wife and son followed her around and let her make the decisions on who to ask for one.

I wasn't looking for any $100 or $1000 dollar books so maybe that is why I had a good time there. I really didn't pay attention to the high end comics. I had Jim Lee sign my books the first day along with Tony Moore. After that I hit all of the quarter dealers and tried to fill my Ultraverse, Valiant, Broadway needs. I came out with two long boxes after two days. On the last day with 3 hours to go in the convention I was able to fill a long box with anything in the 50 cent boxes for $50. I was able to get 325 hand picked books. A nice run of Uncanny X-Men 214-218, 222-226 in great shape.

With this convention I had a plan for the first time ever. And it paid off for me. I have this on my list to go to next year. It was a blast.

I have not been to the large convention so I don't know how went compared to them. But I know my family had a great time.

I don't meant to say I didn't have a good time, I did! It just wasn't what I expected or hoped for. It was some desperately needed R&R for me though and I'm already looking forward to next year!

I agree if I knew that Magnus was going I would had liked to meet up on Sunday to chat a little. Even though I'm new I would have liked to get some advice on conventions. This is the second time I have gone to Planet Comicon and only my second convention. So I was a little lost both times. lol.

I wonder how this convention stacks up to the larger ones, like Wizard and others? I would like to go to one of those in the future.

Also does anyone know how this one stacks up to the MO-Kan Convention coming up? I think I will be going there. I'm going to go to see if Tony Moore will be sketching. I was a fool and didn't drop $40 for a sketch when I was at Planet. Another mistake from a new convention person.

I've only really only done one big convention and that was San Diego last year. Sorry, but SDCC blows Planetcon away. But keep in mind it's a whole different level. SDCC is 30 or more years old and feeds itself now. Also, SDCC isn't just comics anymore. It's as much about movies as it is comics, but it still draws in the dealers. There were multiples of books there that I've never seen a single copy of in person.

As far as Mo-Kan, this one was real similar. Planetcon had a few more guests from other media (Star Wars, BSG, etc.) than Mo-Kan does, but Mo-Kan is usually more comics oriented with a few more comics dealers. Still toys and other stuff, but more comics oriented.

When is Mo-Kan? Are there any guests listed yet?

My wife loves the Don Rosa cover re-creations and can even pick out what most of them are based on. She was proud to know what the Spirit was and impressed Mr. Rosa with that bit of trivia! She bought several covers! And she bought several of his other original designs (not original art, mind you).
