Bondage cover?
Didn't want to dirty up sckao's thread too much, so I started a new one:
What's up with the "bondage cover" thing? Doesn't that imply some kind of sexual thing going on? And does it even need to be pointed out?
I could see if instead of "white pages" it said "sticky pages," but what is the reason for this notation?

Re: Bondage cover?
"Thank you for saving me Magnus! Can you untie me now?"
"Well, darlin', if you really want to thank me..."
It IS kind of strange that they note it though. It kind of seems like it should be pretty obvious from the cover picture.

There are collectors that collect bondage covers, from what I understand. It's just a fetish thing. Unless you have ropes in your house, then it's a kink thing [note to self: go shopping for ropes]. Don't they note other similar things, like "photo cover" and such?depluto wrote:What's up with the "bondage cover" thing? Doesn't that imply some kind of sexual thing going on? Yeah Bondage is considered part of the S & M scene. As such, the term bondage always has sexual connotations. As for noting it in the label, I would guess that is just a hold over from the old days. Wonder Woman covers that depicted bondage were and still are more sought after due to the sexual titilation that older kids and creepy men felt. I think they are just keeping up the trend even though nowadays in our more sexually charged world, they are neither sexual or sought after. Except maybe some of the creepy men.

I'm not so sure:Chuck wrote:(just in case you're not being sarcastic; bondage cover means card stock cover)
See this
and this
And from the horses mouth
Here's a thread showing a variety of Bondage covers. It's a niche type of collecting... like those people who only collect variants or double covers, etc.

It doesn't matter to the grade. CGC always notes things of particular interest or other info about a comic in that area of the label. I checked out a few of my CGC scans, and for Amazing Spider-Man V2 #36, it lists: "9/11 World Trade Center Story".
For Ultimate Spider-Man 2 it lists: "Two different covers exist".
For Uncanny X-Men 137 it lists: "'Death' of Phoenix, The Watcher, Gladiator, and the Imperial Guard Appearance".
Unfortunately, none of these have "Bondage covers".

Bondage covers are more of a novelty than anything. Dr. Fredric Wertham made a big deal about it in his book "Seduction of the Innocent" and they were played up in "Parade of Pleasure" and the Senate Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency too. It was all about how comics were turning otherwise good kids into juvenile delinquents.
They also played on "headlight covers" (Wertham may actually have named them), violence, drug use, alcohol abuse, rape, torture, and all the other things that made comics in the golden age worth reading.
Bondage and all the other stuff mentioned came to a grinding halt with the creation of the Comics Code Authority. Comics publishers agreed to censor themselves in order to stay in business. Kinda makes one wonder where the First Ammendment was during all this.
Other comics publishers, in essence, killed EC Comics (possibly the greatest non-hero publisher of all time) by censoring everything that made EC great. Violent stories with beautiful women and twist endings (not that twist endings were outlawed, but I was on a roll). EC also happened to be crushing the competition with artists like Wally Wood, Al Feldstein, Johnny Craig, Jack Davis, Al Williamson, Joe Orlando, Harvey Kurtzman, and even Frank Frazetta. Oh, and writers like Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Ray Bradbury. EC went on publishing in magazine format, but couldn't survive.
Anyway, once fandom got its legs, people actually sought out the books that were supposed to be rotting the minds of America's youth. They wanted to see what all the hubub was about. Ultimately, many of Wertham's references turned out to be taken out of context and twisted for his own ends, which was apparently to scare the hell out of American parents. But he created a niche of collecting. I met a guy whose goal was to get all of the books mentioned in SOTI at a show once. It sounds fun, but most of the books mentioned draw a premium.
And that's where bondage books come from.

Oh, nothing perverted about a little fun with ropes. A little kink goes a long way.slym2none wrote:Bondage is about the other person letting you do things like that, the trust involved. It isn't really all that perverted.
The perverts are the old men who have hairy backs who breath heavily and collect these covers in lieu of talking to actual women.
If you can't talk about this with your friends, who can you talk about it with?Oops, posted this on the wrong board.
