Original Art Storage and Display help

how do you guys store your original art pages (as in "Page 7 from issue bla bla bla")?

I've got several original art pgaes, but I don't have the wall space to frame them (if I could afford frames that size that is). So, more or less they sit around sort of stashed away individually and it drives me nuts. What do you guys do with your original art pages by way of storing them, or displaying them, or just keeping them organized? Pictures would be great if you have a unique way of doing this!

Flat storage in architectural drawers, alphabetically by title for inks and magazine holders for colors.

I get the Mylar sleeves with the special sized backboards to go in them. Stay with me, because from here it gets good.

Once they are in the sleeves, I put them into mats and frames. This does two things, it adds extra UV protection with both the mylar and the UV protective glass and it allows me to change them out from time to time. Most of my art is the same size, so I just swap it out.

As for the frames and mats, I have the mat cut to common sized frames, so there's no charge for custom framing. The mat is around $6 and if frames are on sale for half price, I can get them for as little at $14 for the frames large enough for a full page.

Wish I had thought of that technique! I actually had several pages custom framed when I collected.

The other pages I kept in an artists portfolio (the kind with with individual page holders).

I started with custom framing, but sometimes it was more expensive than the art itself!

Unfortunately, that is the truth! And the frames never added any sort of resale value when I sold my collection.

Where can I get an artists portfolio that is the right size for comic book production art? As in the kind of original art pages that were later used to make comic pages and not as in commissioned art. Art supply stores or something?

What's that? heh, is it like a piece of furniture? I need something sort of compact which is why I want to go with some kind of "book" style storage with pages or something. I don't have the wall space to hang my pages at the moment....

Thanks for the replies guys. The bag and board thing obviously sounds good too, but that's just protection and doesn't help with storage, which is why I sort of like the "book" idea of some kind.....

Yup. Flat files is another name. At a surplus store I happened to find a nice wooden kind with drawers having the right size for four small piles of ink pages.

I like the Itoya Art Portfolios. They come in a variety of sizes but I usually get the 14x17 size since most pages only vary in width. I have gotten good deals on eBay from this seller.

This is the 11x17 size but he has had the 14x17 size before.

As Magnusr mentioned, try some office surplus stores to see if they have any map/blueprint cabinets. I have been looking for a used one myself. New ones are just too pricey for me.

Another good storage option is metal photo boxes. They come in a wide variety of sizes and are usually only 3 or 4 inches in height. Last time I checked DickBlick had some.

Thanks for the great advice guys. I went to a local art supply store and picked up this page book with UV protected pages. It works relatively well, although I noticed that one of my Romita Jr. Iron Man pages is a little cramped in there, so I wish I would have bought a wider book. Otherwise, it works great and the art looks really nice, and it's cool to be able to flip through the book.

I wasn't sure what the thing was going to cost, but I was relieved when I only shelled out 15 bones to nab it.

20-ish dollars for a porfolio does not hit me as terribly expensive, why so cheap?

Yeah, Those are the portfolios. They just run about that price or less. The E-bay auction X-O linked to is actually for 3 of the books in one auction. That's the only reason the price is higher.

Just a quick related question,..can one get sheets of Mylar? Or rather a better question is can one get a 'roll' of mylar and cut sheets from it to use on large posters?

Try here. They have darn near every size imaginable.
