Questions concerning archival nature of CGC

Post by X-O HoboJoe »

I'm considering getting some of my SA key books that are def. NOT 9.8's slabbed, for archival purposes. It's probably already been run into the ground on several thousand topic boards, but this is the only one I haunt regularly and I've not seen it yet:

Seeing as I'm willing to pay $24 to send an AF 15 in 1.5 to 2.0 condition off on vacation, it's a question of personal preference. FINALLY to the questions:

Should I use slabbing for preservation?
Am I better off with a mylar of some sort?
Do I consider a company besides CGC, since I'm not selling in the near-future anyway?

I've been very pleased with CGC thus far and am in the process of sending all my raw 9.8 GA/SA/BA (both of them) off
Do I throw my beat-up key books in with them?
I DO NOT EAT, DRINK OR ABSORB SOULS, DAMMIT!

If you are not selling your low grade AF 15, and just want to preserve it, keep it in a mylar with some microchamber paper. This will preserve it as well as a CGC case, minus the 3-foot drop protection.

I also think you will get hit for a 'standard' submission fee on that book, which would bring the grading fee to $40. Add in the shipping both ways and you are at $45 or more, depending on how many books you send in. The more books you send in, the less per book you pay in shipping.

I dont think that you should cgc your books just for archival purpose. I think that you would get much better protection with a couple of mylars and a full back. There is too much talk of shaken comic syndrome me to think that cgc is a good archival method. I also think that the temp/humidity that you store your books in has more to do with condition protection than most anything else.
Of course if you are worried about restoration, and at 1.5-2.0 I dont think that you are, I would send it to cgc to have them check the resto on the book. I dont think that cgc does that great of a job protecting books. Stick the books in a nice tight mylar where the book fits in the middle but doesnt slide around or touch the edges...then slip the mylared book into a larger mylar with a full back in it..place it in your box. I would think that is about all the protection you would need on a book like that..

Oh yeah and I dont think that you will be getting an AF 15 graded by cgc for $24. I coudl be wrong, but I am thinking that the actual cost would be slightly more. :thumb:

Do they really claim a 3-foot drop protection? I dropped one two feet and it cracked the case and bent the corner of the comic.

I only own two. One I bought for a buck, and the other was a Solar 1 that I got so Perlin could remark the case for me. That's the one I dropped, about five minutes after Don drew on it.

Yeah, no I was just being flip. I don't think there is a guarantee. I'm surprised the comic got bent.

You would be better off with mylar. Mylar will last forever and keep the book in the same shape.

The CGC encasement is not meant for preservation. They recommend that you get the book re-cased every 7 years so the paper in the middle of the book is changed. The CGC case is not a vacuum, so the outside element can effect it.

To me, it seems like the only preservation that the CGC case does better than mylar is like others have said - protection from drops and other clumsy things. That said, don't drop your books and use mylar. Your books and your pocket book will thank you.

If you send it to me, I will be happy to archive it for you for as long as you'd like...for a small fee, of course.
