So I noticed if a Valiant book is in 9.4 or lower grade and if a Bronze Age book is in 9.2 or lower grade, the price drops something like 40%. For example; a Magnus #1 in 9.6 will fetch a nice $25-30 price tag but a 9.4 Magnus #1 will be hard to sell at $10. Same thing with Bronze Age books between 9.4 and 9.2. I was wondering what other board members thought the reason was behind this. Have we really become that anal as collectors and will lower 9’s ever get the respect they should? Discuss amongst yourselves.

There's just a point at which the raw book is more desirable than the slab.

For valiants, it seems like 9.4 is that point for most pre-unity. For some books I'd say even 9.6 is not worth it.

I believe as more of the population is graded (assuming that MOST books of 9+ in a given popupation will be graded eventually) we'll see the "9.8" effect slack off, seeing the extreme multiples being paid out only for the 9.9 to 10's. Once everyone gets ahold of a few 9.8's, 9.6's, 9.4's and looks at the slight differences in the grades, 9.8 in the modern grades will no longer be "holy-grails." IMO, a 9.8 should always be worth more than a 9.6 or 4, but not in the excesses we've seen on some of the modern books over the last few years.

The graded coins and cards have been around for quite some time, can anyone give us a history lesson on a similar trend (or lack thereof) in those markets?

BTW, I'll snatch up a 9.6 or 4 in a heartbeat for a modern book I want, but I'd be very careful if speculating on anything 9.8+ modern. We've all seen the bottom drop out before.

I bid on someones 9.6's the other day and didn't hit the reserve, but I won't mention any names!

If there's anything you want arch, just name your price and it's probably yours. I'm not looking to give stuff away for under grading cost+valiantcomics.com raw guide, though.

I made second chance offers on four of my recent auctions that did not meet reserve. The H0 pink was sold for $142. The reserve was 150.15. The other three are still in limbo. I did not bother to make the offer on a couple others, like the Rai's, which I'd rather keep than sell that cheaply.

I was more thinking for pre-unity books not worth slabbing at 9.6: Magnus 3,9,10,11,13,14,A&A0,Rai 0,Solar 4-6. Do I have many of these around in 9.6 - yes. Will I be getting more? Probably not.

Does anyone know how much A&A #0 regular CGC 9.8 fetch around? Just curious whether or not to send some in for grading.

I don't think I can quite agree with this statement. Personally, from experience and the data I've seen, I'm guessing that 9.8 will be the 'top' of the 'common' uber grades for everyone. I seriously doubt, based on nearly 5 years of data now, that 9.9's and 10.0's are going to come flooding into the market any time soon. I think it's safe to say that 9.8 will be the ceiling for the 'average' collector, and that that will be what will become 'the' grade to own for the everyday joe.

This happened in coins, MS65 is pretty much the workhorse as far as grades go for pre-1950 coins. It's by FAR the most common of the uber grades, and doesn't sell for incredible premiums over M63s....especially in the gold and silver dollar brackets. You can get common MS65 Silver dollars (Peace and Morgan) for about $75-$150..and MS63's sell for about $20-$40.

And no, few people want MS60's. They suffer the most. ;) In fact, AU58's (having just the SLIGHEST brush of wear on the highest points) frequently sell for more than MS60's of the same coin.

Once you get to MS66-up, the sky's usually the limit as far as price goes, and they are incredibly rare.

By the by...anyone notice the MS68 1884S $1 Morgan that NGC graded in about 1988? There's a Million dollar coin. :) Such a beaut!

None have been sold, as far as I know. There's only THREE! It's the single scarcest Pre-Unity first issue in grade! Moreso than Harb #1!

Thanks for the info, I was hoping someone with coin or card market background would shed some light (tho I don't know a MS from an AU. If it ain't BS, I prolly won't spot it. :P )

So, Zeph, do you think we'll still see the 9.8's selling for $1K+ in 5 years on books worth say, $31 raw?

Oh, heck no! The market will definitely adjust once the shakedown (and by that, I mean every copy that's GOING to be sent in, IS sent in) is over. But I do see a premium being paid that will still be multiples of 9.6, and more than 2 or 3 times.

On the other hand, I just scored the most amazing 9.8 I can imagine, on a VERY special book to me, a key book....and for next to NOTHING. Details when it arrives. Yay me!

I agree with this. I just got 5-6 more and I don't think any are 9.8. I've had about 15 since I started with the CGC thing.

I think this has more to do with the books age than the 9.2 or 9.4 grade. If the book was 30 years old or more I think there would be more action on them. With them being moderns, a 9.2 or 9.4 is not that hard to get.

Hmm this is for the regular copy, not the gold copy. So there were no 9.8 that ever came up for sale? Is there a demand for this book in 9.8? I need to know this before I send off like 10 copies of this book to grade. They all fall within the 9.6-9.8 areas with a few that might even get 9.9's.

No, I'm talking about the gold, sorry. I would pick up a 9.8 A&A 0 regular for $20 ppd if given the opportunity, just to save me the trouble of doing it myself. (Assuming I didn't have one already. I do not.)

This is, indeed, for the regular issue. There are only 3 9.8's, and none higher. If you're going to get 9.8's and a 9.9, by all means, send them in.

Yes, there IS a demand for this book in 9.8 (namely me.) I'd pay $25 for one.
