I was hoping to have seen you this year... :(

Talking on the phone is fine...but seeing you in person is better...your "nephew" will also miss you!..

As you mentioned there will be other opprtunity's to get together....

Have a safe trip....
Wow, I didnt think anyone gave a $hit... thanks guys. Boosted my day 100%. :thumb:

I have the chance to go and a couple free tickets to burn but being away from the family like that... just is not good. We travel SO much with this new job. I put in my proposal to hire six new personnel, which was accepted within 2 hours. When they get here things will get better and we can spread the 'wealth' of TDY trips (business trips - TDY refers to an Army term which stands for Temporary Duty, but we are 100% former military in the office so we still use it), getting the contracted 25% of the year TDY closer to that number. At this point, if I keep it up, my numbers would look like 60% of the year TDY. :!: BUT, at least it got me out to see a board member twice (Elveen) and hopefully future TDYs will bring me to a town near YOU. We always have vehicles with GPS, and I am more than willing to drive for a while or meet halfway (as long as there is a cheap bin LCS somewhere in there... JK) !!!

John, please tell my Nephew, I'll see him soon... just not this time. I really REALLY looked forward to getting with you again as well as the other guys... but, I dont know, when I was in the Army and was deployed to this place or that, it was on a mission and it mattered. Now that I am a civilian now and have not really went anywhere since Afghanistan, I appreciate all the 'pillow time' (pillow time is... sleeping on YOUR own pillow in YOUR own bed next to your wife) that I have had during the years. So now, time spent in an empty hotel room starts to suck. I mean yeah, I bring my PS2, play a bit, watch a movie, or read comics (I DL books to read on the road, people may say that is a bad thing to do but with all the gear that I carry on TDY (an EXTRA 75 lbs on top of my personal gear), I don't have the time to bring along books AND they get jacked up very easily on the road. Even with that, I end up missing home. I miss putting the kids to bed. I miss sitting there, 'touching Alyssa's arm until it tickles' and then leaving the room to hear, "Daddy...... I love you." (in a very sleepy voice). THAT my friends, is when you KNOW that your kids love you. When THEY initiate the 'I love you'... it just really tears at you when you hear the sleepy voice softly tell you that from across a darkened room. You've been sitting there for 15-20, touching your childs are and getting frustrated because you want to get on the boards or play the 360 or read comics or whatever and then FINALLY get to leave... just to be rewarded for your selfish frustration with an honest, "Daddy, I love you." Just sayin'.....

So, that gentlemen... is why I am skipping the Con. I TOTALLY dig going to do all that stuff, but I have little ones... and well, when you have lived the life that I have for the past 20 years, you sit back and think 'was it worth sacrificing all the things I am experiencing now with Alyssa that I missed with all the other kids ?'. I sit here and think, 'yes... Serving was the thing to do.' But I also realize all the things I missed over the last 20 years. Now I am trying to make up for it... but I know that there are a few kids of mine that I can never make it up to because those days are over. Priorities... are much clearer now.

There will be other times... well, unless I get whacked when I go TDY to Iraq in February. :thumb:

I'm really disappointed you're not going, Knightt. I was looking forward to meeting you in person. But, I totally understand your reasoning and I would make the same decision if I were in your shoes. And you so hit the nail on the head about the kids! Your post made me want to leave work early just to go hug my kids!

What constitutes a "full set", both in characters and in price?

Is the National like most shows (Saturday the big day), trying to figure out which will give me the most nerdy goodness if I get covered at work. Also, what time does it usually run on Friday? (Wouldn't have to leave till 6pm Friday to make my dozens.)

All this talk... MAN, you guys are really making me want to go to the con !!! I could SO use the break but kinda got this feeling I would be wiped out upon my return due to all the pizza, beer, good cheer and comic geekness in abundance... and another thing, I LOVE NEW YORK !!! All the chicks walking around, dark hair, black clothes and warm NYC charm. :)

Wish I could make it... and to all of you that I have not met in person YET and have met before, YOU guys really make the Cons worthwhile. So since I cant make it, if anyone wants to pick me up some free $hit that might stop me from crying myself to sleep at night. (oh woe is me..... )

If Mark Sparacio is there would someone please stop by and tell him, that I am sorry that I missed him at SDCC, just mention my name and the CF fund raiser... you'll notice I did not have any of his lithos up for auction this year (well I had one), he normally loads me up on EVERYTHING that he has, but this year was just too busy. I thought this would be my last chance to get to a Con that is Valiant related, dammit....

Well good news is that I will be heading to spend a weekend with Don Perlin and his wife Becky before Christmas. I will make sure to do a daily post when that happens. I can't wait... we have spoken about it so often, now it is down to finding time between medical appointments, holidays and when I am actually not out of town on business.

Assuming I can stick to my guns and save some money I am going to try to make it out next year. Maybe even to San Diego as well. :hope: I figure $1000 for each trip should cover it. Maybe Knightt will share a room with me to cut down on cost. :P If I save $100 a month I should be good for at least one of them. I have never flown before and that is going to kill my nerves when it comes time.

When I went to SDCC last year, I forget the exact amount, but when I totalled it up it was about $1300.

That being said - $600 was tied up in my plane ticket and rental car. You may not want to rent a car, and Amarillo's airport is awfully gay in that it goes to four cities - Denver, Dallas, Vegas and Houston. I had to connect in Houston to a flight to San Diego, which presumably drove the price of the ticket up. I also dropped $45 to fill the car back up at the end of the week ($3.499 per gallon!).

My hotel was very cheap. I split a room with a friend from Joisey. It was the Best Western in San Ysidro, better known as "Exit 2 on I-5". Our balcony overlooked Tijuana, which impressed the damnyankees I was staying with, but reminded me of spring break in El Paso. My half of the hotel bill for Wed night to Sunday night was $186. That was freakin' awesome. We were 15 miles away from the convention centre and had to pay $8 a day to park less than 10 blocks from the convention centre. We could have gotten a closer parking spot of a certain Bostonian we were travelling with could get her fat *SQUEE* out of bed prior to noon eastern time.

That still allotted me $450 walking around money. Not enough to do anything impressive, but still a lot of fun to be had.

Yeah, wont be renting a car. I don't know how to drive. :P Never learned and don't want to. No idea on plane price. Never flown, don't want to but will anyways. As soon as I know if I am going for sure or not I will get tickets as far in advance as I can. Seem to save money that way. Might talk to my dad about plane tickets. He gets them online anytime he goes anywhere. He seems to find some great deals. Hotel, maybe split with someone else. Not really planning to spend much. The idea is just to go to meet up with some of you all. I should have a chunk of the money come tax time if not all of it.

Well....I wanted to go, and I tried to set it up...but because of the proximity to Turkey Day, the cheapest plane ticket would have been $330, and I would have had to kennel the dogs ($55/day) for at least four days, plus the hotel....it was getting to be near $700 just to get there....

I really wanted to go. Ah well. :(
