Interview the Italian editor of the Valiant books...
Mr. Fantastic has received approval to interview the editor
of the Italian Valiant books...
Here's some information on those books:
http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/italian/
What he needs from us are the questions!
Let's use this topic to generate questions for the interview...
I'll start with the basics...
About how many copies were printed for each book?
Were any of the books much higher or much lower in the number printed?
What are the differences for "in edicola" and "in libreria" editions?
Did the Valiant books sell well compared to Marvel and DC?
How was the artwork for each comic delivered to Italy?
Were the books available in comic book shops, book stores,
and places that sell magazines? Where else?

Man, who has these comics? Those would be the creme of the crop IMHO ... very cool. I used to collect Playboy, and I would always try to pick up foreign issues when given the chance - very cool collectables, and hard to find.
I should have hit some comics shops while I was in Europe (mid-90's) and looked for these!!! *smackhead*

Hi all!
I met Mr. Fantastic just yesterday in Rome, and I'll gladly answer your Qs re: Play Press' Valiant editions.
As I understand it, though, Mr. F. is already putting together stuff for an interview -- so I'll wait for him to send me his text.
In the meanwhile, I'll just tease you with this bit...
So we were stuck with DCU books, which were goin' strong, and a few indies. As a matter of fact, today Play Press still publishes DCU mags and tpbs.
Anyway, back to January '94, we started a bidding war for Valiant rights against another Italian publisher. They proposed a publishing plan based on a chronological presentation, from Magnus, Rai and Solar up to Unity.
We, on the other hand, thought that:
a) the early-to-mid '90s were the Age of Coolness in comics, and Italy made no exception. Way better Quesada's Ninjak and Turok than the classical graphic layout of the first Magnus/Rai issues.
b) Jim Shooter was recently removed from his e-i-c position, and the new PTB at Valiant would arguably been less than willing to start a licensing deal by mainly focusing on Shooter's books.
Bob Layton, whom I still hear from sometimes and that I hugely respect, preferred our editorial plan (and, I guess, our great business track record with DC and Marvel).
He was also our guest later that year, in November's Lucca Fair, where he gave me the first few hints of what was cooking up as far as Birthquake was concerned. IIRC we covered the news in our Italian mags at least 2 months before Wizard in the US.

In the early '94 we lost the rights to lots of Marvel Universe series, what with the birth of Panini Comics, an "official" Italian branch of Marvel Ltd. [later Panini was sold back to an Italian publishing group, even if they still retained the reprint rights to all of the MU characters for Italy, France and Germany].to ask how they choose to star publication with turok, ninjak and Doctro Mirage instead of beginning with Magnus, Solar and the other early Valiant series.
