Call me old school, but NO WAY am i going to do this!!! I reject the comics on DVD-ROM and I reject this. The publishers should concentrate on omnibus' in lieu of this

Even as their creations -- from Iron Man to Wonder Woman -- become increasingly visible in pop culture through new movies and video games, old-school comics publishers rely primarily on specialized, out-of-the-way comic shops for distribution of their bread-and-butter product.
"You don't have that spinner rack of comic books sitting in the local five-and-dime any more," said Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Publishing. "We don't have our product intersecting kids in their lifestyle space as much as we used to."
Translate "kids' lifestyle space" into plain English and you get "the Internet." Marvel's two most prominent competitors currently offer online teasers designed to drive the sales of comics or book collections.
Like it or not, comics on the internet are the future and if the industry is going to survive they have to give it as much attention as the comics on paper.
I completely expected this and am somewhat disappointed that the comics would not be downloadable. I don't see the difference in showing it online constantly and letting people download them. All they're going to do is take up bandwidth and make it more difficult for the comics to be read freely.
At least, they what I believe.

Not necessarily. Remember, Digital comics are simply for fans. People who want to read the books but don't want to pay higher prices. The idea is exactly the same as the trade paperback except in a different format. Less costly reprints for the non-collector to enjoy.Fanboy375 wrote:if i was a retailer I would be *SQUEE*!!!
Before, during, and after a movie comes out, fans flock to comic stores to buy older issues. Most NEW collectors are not gonna shell out big bucks for Ghost Rider 1, 30 days of night #1, etc, when they can download them online.
I actually believe the someone reading the digital copy would probably prefer the real deal over the digital any day for the most part. Especially if it was a good issue. It will make previewing a copy before buying a lot easier for future collectors.
This is simply a cheap way to get the art form out there to the masses and make it more affordable as well.
Again though, that's just my opinion.

I agree. That quote is a satisfactory answer as to "why". For many of us on this board, due too our age, our first exposure to new comics may very well have been a spinner rack at a grocery or bargain store. As my mom would grocery shop, I would browse through the comic rack. Sadly, this is no longer an option.Cyberstrike wrote:This quote to me explains why:Fanboy375 wrote:http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071113/ap_ ... ics_online

Yeah, my opinion as well. Let's just hope that is how it plays out.steverino wrote:Not necessarily. Remember, Digital comics are simply for fans. Crossgen already tried this at a MUCH cheaper price and I don't recall it burning up the world. Don't know if subscriptions to view masses of comics is the way to go.
I may have gotten one online comic from Marvel to work in my whole life (they've been offering a lot of online comics for free for years now) so I'm not real anxious to start paying for them.

doubt it....the tpb market is the money maker for the comic companies these days. The floppies are so expensive to make that a lot of times the tpb market is what keeps them afloat. tpb tend to be cheaper and more profitable.
and again, the digital comics as they are being promoted right now are not for existing comic book fans. They are a tactic to get kids to start reading comics by exposing them to comics in a medium they spend the most time with (computers). The hope is that it will eventually lead to new readers in the hard copy format. Basically an electronic spinner rack if you will

To some degree I like this idea. $60 a year to read all the Marvel comics I want... not bad. Most of the stuff put out by Marvel is stuff I am interested in reading, but that I don't want to buy. This would let me read all I want pretty cheap.
Of course, I can also walk two blocks over to Border's and read most anything I want in trade paperback anyway, so maybe it's not worth it.

But would the first 100 issues of the book written over 40 years ago really appeal to the kids? Of course, Spidey holds up slightly better than some of the others. It's not like Fantastic Four where the U.S. Air Force launches a nuclear missle at the Human Torch over a major city only to have Reed Richards pluck it out of the sky bare handed (by stetching his arms all the way from the ground) and throws the missle into the ocean to explode "harmlessly." LOL You got to love those old comics.myron wrote:It was crossgen though...not the big 2...Todd Luck wrote:Crossgen already tried this at a MUCH cheaper price and I don't recall it burning up the world. I'm sure they've got other stuff on there. I just don't know if all that many people will care. Maybe they're getting get good reactions out of all the stuff they've put on the net. That stuff has got to work for somebody

There was a server crash after Marvel announced the digital comics subscription thing. The site is up and running now with a funny video called "Who To Blame part 1" about what happened on the site.Todd Luck wrote:Been trying all day and I still get the "This page cannot be displayed" message every single time.krazie14me wrote:maybe if your patient it will work for you .I got in again with no problem.

Okay any explaination as to why it won't work for me today? I've tried it on two different user accounts on my desktop and also on my lap top.Cyberstrike wrote:There was a server crash after Marvel announced the digital comics subscription thing.
