They are basically just reprints of classic stories in comic book form with tales from the past like Tom Sawyer and such. There are quite a few of them and it can get kind of pricey tracking them all down.

How much should they be, and are there some that are more valuable than others?

I thoguht I heard that the Fred. Douglass is hard to come by.

Any pics of the covers?

I bought 90% of them in one rather pricey deal long time ago. Right now I'm reading through them. I like them. It's mainly the old Classics Illustrated comics, with new covers, recolored and reprinted in a smaller format, with, which is a bonus, a study guide essay in each. Others explained to me that some of them are new books, made from scratch by Acclaim. These are more sought after and they are the ones dragging up the price for getting all of them. Most of them should not be much more than a dollar.

I saw darn near a full run of these at a store in Janesville a few (ok 7) years ago and I'm still kicking myself for not getting them...

I would have to say that Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass would be the rarest of Acclaim's Classic Illustrated titles.

Thanks.

I think I have an opportunity to get one of these.

Anyone have an idea of the going rate?

I would think it be difficult to put a monetary value on each one right now since not a lot of people around here seem to collect them. I know SonicDan has a set, maybe he could offer his opinion on some values.

I'd say anywhere between 50 cents and $2.

Unless someone makes a higher bid.

I just purchased a complete run from Dark Adventure for $200 + ship.

Link

I considered it underpriced by at least $100 based on past open market auctions. If you search, you will find some threads here about listings which included the two rare books feching $5 each across large runs.

These are for my own personal set and not for sale.

Elveen, whatever you can pick up the Douglas for I will double it and pay shipping, minumum $10.

Here's a complete list:

http://www.classicscentral.com/acclaim-list.htm

All but 3 generally sell for about $3.00 each. Those 3 are:

SG59. Henry IV--Part 1 * original title
SG61. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass * original title
SG62. The Scarlet Pimpernel * original title

This is because of 2 reasons. They are the only 3 'original' stories from the Acclaim Classics Illustrated. That means that all the other books from Acclaim were previously reprinted in Classics Illustrated books before Acclaim made them. For a collector of Classics Illustrated, these 3 books are only found in the Acclaim set. The other reason is that they are late run. The Henry IV book was 4th to last in printing. The other 2 books are the last 2 printed. They, supposedly, have the lowest print runs & they are the only originals. The Scarlet Pimpernel & Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass generally sell from $20-$50 each when sold properly on E-bay.

In my opinion, the rarest Classics Illustrated Acclaim items are found on this page:

http://www.classicscentral.com/unusual.htm
There are 3 different boxed sets of 5 books. I have 2 of them, but in several years of searching have not been able to locate the third.

Hope that helps. :thumb: ~Pete

That's not a bad deal, but they were not completely honest either. There are actually 62 books in the set. The last book (62nd) is Scarlet Pimpernel & not Douglas. It is equally sought after with the Douglas book in this set. If they omitted that book then the set is worth considerably less. :) ~Pete

I'll have to bring that up with Lon. I'm sure I will get nowhere, though. I really was paying based on condition and that I do not have to piece it together myself.

I have not processed the books yet so I'm not sure either way.

I'll have to see if I still have these. I sold an entire box of books recently but I don't think these were in there. I will have to look for the "rare" books. Interesting thread.

Zero is correct. There were 62 titles printed if I remember correctly.
The boxed sets would be the most difficult to find these days I would imagine.

I said that the Frederick Douglass title was probably the hardest to find based on my bulk sale of all Acclaim's Classic Illustrated titles back in (I think) 2000.

Each of the titles I sold had inventory levels in the five figures with the exception of Frederick Douglass, which if memory serves me correctly, was out of stock by that time.

You had The Scarlet Pimpernel in bulk larger than the F. Douglass book? :hm:

I pretty sure, yes. I'll have to go back and look through some old records to be sure, but I'm pretty confident about that.

WOW! Like a bad dream!
When I started at Acclaim, I had CARTONS of Frederick Douglass looking back at me as I spent weekends shipping Classic Illustrated backorders out to distributors!
If I only knew then...
