Groo: Hell on Earth

It's the 25th Anniversary for Groo. This story is awesome. Groo is responsible for global warming and the Sage discovers the dangers of cow burps. Classic stuff. I'm going to pick the other 2 issues of this mini.

Plus ME's answers in the letters columns are pretty damn funny.

I got them out of a .25 bin.

working on a New Universe reading project right now. I'm treating the books as "Pre-Pitt" and "after-Pitt" since the New U. changed so much after Pittsburgh was blown up.

Reading the Ultimate Marvel Team-Up huge trade. I'm about half way through it. It's great stuff. The Punisher issues drawn by Sinkeiwicz (spelling) are outstanding.

I read the first 2 Ultimate Galactus trades. I thought they were great. If I was reading these monthly instead of in trades, I doubt I would've liked the stories much. I like the Capt Marvel character alot.

Man, it's amazing to me how good these books are, I'm getting close to the end of the run of the long-running books and there's a surprise almost every issue. Out of the blue, major characters are killed off and there's almost always something "world-shaking" happening. I'm guessing at this point, the writers knew sales were poor, so they figured they could do whatever they wanted with these books while they lasted. The New Universe books seem to be almost the exact opposite of VALIANT, in that they got better as they got closer to the end.

To be honest, the books I'm enjoying right now were done well after Shooter departed. I have to give Jim credit for coming up with the New Universe concept, and his excellent work on the early issues of Star Brand. However, many of the early books in the New U. line suffered because of major budget cuts, which didn't allow the best creators to be used on the books. Some of the books really suffered from not having the same writer from issue to issue, in one case, a major cliffhanger was basically just dropped, with no mention to it in later issues.

Another problem with the New Universe was it was supposed to be the "World Outside Your Window", but several of the books violated that from their first issue. Even Shooter included aliens in Star Brand. If Jim couldn't even stick to the rules he presumably created, it's not surprising some of the other writers didn't, either.

In my opinion, the best days of the New U. happened right after Jim left. Half of the line was cancelled, which allowed for some quality people to take over the remaining books. Also, some of the concepts that didn't fit in were retconned in a way that seemed to work better (Justice is a good example of that).

Picked up PAX ROMANA when I got Shooter's LSH.

Wow! Does this book have it all. I don't know anything about this dude Hickman, but I'll be looking for some of his other work.

Anyone else reading it? Any recommendations on his other stuff?

Well....I ran out of Groo issues to read....I figure I read about 50 of the Marvel run, plus the Pacific and Eclipse run.

I tried Swamp Thing #140-143, but...it was silly, and didn't grab me.

Same with Hellblazer #15-18.

Same with Justice League #11-18.

So, since I have a dollar book store that opened up a couple of months ago near me, I've been reading that.

Got nearly the whole "Left Behind" series (which should be taken with large grains of salt), and I started reading the first one, only to discover that I'd read it a decade ago. But there are 12, and I got the first 6 or so, plus 9, 10, and 12....all for $1.....so.

Also got "Prey" and "Timeline" by Michael Crichton, one of my favorite writers, hardcover both....yup, $1.

Also a new edition LOTR:ROTK hardcover (mainly for the Appendix, as I read my last paperback edition to death years ago, and the Appendix is in tatters.)

Also about 7 Stephen King books.

A book on landscaping ($24.95 cover!) and an expose on Scientology....plus a first edition of Hannibal. Yay.

Got $31, spent $33 and change.

Cover price on these books total is about $600.

So, yeah. Fun!

They had the entire second season of Xena, but it was on VHS, and I thought "hmmm....extinct format, I don't watch it, will some nerds buy it on eBay? Probably not."

Dan Dare over at Virgin Comics, written by Garth Ennis has been an entertaining read. Only two issues in now so well worth picking up.

Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future, is an old, really old, British Sci-fi character given a recent reboot. It reads like a war story featuring James Bond via the Damn Busters in a 50's-ish sci-fi setting, lovelly stuff, but quite, well English, I'd be interested to hear what you guys across the pond think of it if any of you have picked it up.

Being a fan of 50's-ish sci-fi stuff in general, I started to order Dan Dare. I can't remember why I didn't. Next time I make a trip to an LCS, I'll see if they have any in stock and maybe get it a try.

And I am REALLY enjoying the new Ghost Rider series. It's the perfect mix of all the best parts of the previous series. A more simple scope like the original with Johnny Blaze as the Ghost Rider (and none of that convoluted Midnight Sons crap), and Mark Texeria art. Not to mention great writing. Two thumbs up!

Well, picked up the latest Thor (#6) yesterday from my soon to be closed comic shop. The first three pages were hillarious! Now if only they hadn't skipped getting #5 for me.

I also enjoyed reading a few Valiant back issues that I picked up there for $1 a piece. Some stuff I hadn't ever read before.

Other than that, I've mostly been re-reading my old Valiants (the few I have so far) and my old New Universe comics. Also reading the current X crossover, Messiah Complex. Enjoying it so far.

I have read the first 9 issues of Negation. It's good.

I like the concept. The art is easy to follow and flashy at the same time. The coloring is SUPER.

I do not like quick read comic books....... (end of the run XOs

)

These books are not a quick read, but the last few books ended a bit too early. (I thought) Even just one or two pages worth or story.

But I am excited to read a few more tonight.

I picked up Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus vol. 1 last weekend.

That is some cool, good stuff. I am totally into it.
