Bound books

He has made tests of Archer and Armstrong 0-11, Shadowman 1-18 and H.A.R.D. Corps 1-12

I am only bidding on the Shadowman one because it looks really cool.
I would leave it as is. I already have my plans for my A + A 0-26 as one book and H.A.R.D Corps 1-30 as another book.

Im wanting to purchase a set of those dust jackets from him... no reply to my mail though

Library Binding Company... is this the way to go?

I have the 'slip' to fill out but I have some questions about it. Can someone walk me through this?

Match, New, Repeat?

Color?

Stardard/Custom bind?
Panel lines?
Lettering?
Head and Tail Bands?
Ribbon Marker?
Head and Tail lines?
Front Cover lettering: I think I understand this one, but where do I give them the info? Do I put this on the image on the right side of the slip?

Die stamp? Anyone have a die stamp for The Visitor? Psi Lords? A&A

Trim? Pica? cove size? Cover no?

Once I do this once or twice Ill feel more confident.

Oh also, on the right side of the 'slip' : Slot, Blank area, Type???

Match, New, Repeat?
First bind so it would be a new.
Match is only if you are binding a new book in a set and want them to look the same. Repeat is if you are binding a book 2X or more and want to look the same.

Color?

Depends do you have an idea how you want your cover to look?

In the large box you draw an idea of how you want your book to look.

look at post 18 the red and yellow band at the top and bottom of the book. They are I believe 4 bucks extra and are only for look no real functional purpose.

Do you want a fabric bookmark built into the book?

They are lines at the very top and bottom of the spine of the book.

Yes, but again this cost extra money.

Ummm no. They can create one for you but you have to send a black and white image detailing the side and they can cost any where from 25-60(I believe) to be created. You can email James at library for information on that.

They have no valiant dies available last I checked but that was last fall. But as I haven't seen any bound Valiant books done except for Steve's I dont think thats much changed.

Though what kind of dies are you looking to have. A Valiant star for the spine or the actual titles?

How much do these cost? If they were available Id use them on my bound books for sure.

That sure looks like a ton of work to collect those comics and then bind them and then only sell them for $20?

How much work did he put into the A&A? Did he take out the staples or cu them out? Hmm.. ,maybe I dont know a lot about it but it seems like a lot of work to me

David is the liaison for Capital Bindery he did those books as a test. Basically to make them he cut them down the center using an exacto knife then removed the staples. The books were then bound similar to how marvel and dc make their soft covers. His new endeavor singlebound studios is strictly for softcover binding but allow people to design their own covers.

The major benefit i can see using them is the ability to design your own cover. I am actually one of the beta testers he is using for the service and am having the 12 issues of the Intimates from Wildstorm.

I picked that as its a book that will never be traded and I thought it would look cool. I am currently designing my cover up and will keep you all apprasied on how the final product looks. Good to hear the A & A 0-11 came out so nicely.

Looking at David's notes the 12 issue run have come out very sturdy, but the 1-18 issue book he did for Shadowman was almost too big so for softcover binding I will likely keep to 14 issues or less.

Ah ok.. so it may not save as much money as we first thought if we cannot combine as many books as with the hardcovers. The plus side is that it feels a bit better in your hands PLUS you can design your own exterior cover.

Im still not sold on it. But that is coming from a guy who is still trying to figure out what he wants from the hardcovers.

Yea I'd Rather Do The Hardbounds for Commons & Use TPB's for anthing Pre-Unity that I can. Really I wanna do the Bloodshot Acclaim and Some Sets that will fit real well like secret weapons & Shadowman II, Timewalker, stuff like that.

I am seriously considering doing my comics in hardcover like this as well. Although I think I would also miss the feel of a comic book in my hands. The hardcovers would look and feel great as well. Unfortunatly, It's not financially feasible for me to get two sets of all the Valiant stuff just so I can make HB's out of one set. So I have to decide if I want to have my only set be hardcover or keep them as seperate comics.

Right now, I'm 7 issues away from having 1-30 of HARD Corps and starting to think about whether to send them off for binding as I get each set done. This would space out the cost for binding them also. Not sure if I should put all 30 issues in one book or break it up into two.

A question for those that have bound books like this: Do you go through and remove pages if it happens to have an ad page on each side (so that the pages remaining still follow properly...ugh hope I'm explaining that okay). Like if you had story on page 14 (left side page when laying down open) then ads on page 15 and 16, then story on page 17. Would you cut out 15/16 to save space in the book before sending it away to be bound?

Lots to ponder...

I usually do with a few exception remove every 2 sided ad page and the back covers.

Example your Hard Corps book would have 1-19, Harby 30, 20, Harby 31, 21-30 for 32 issues if you wanted to include it. That could make 1 mammoth volume or 2 16 issue ones. If you do the one book I would take every 2 page ad out. If you did the 2 books of 16 I would keep everything in.

The joy of it is you can decide what works best for you.

As for getting 2 sets of books, I have enough trouble getting 1 so thats what I am binding.

I bind everything ... part of it is I like to reread the ads as part of the experience. Brings back a lot of memories and when my kids read the books, they can see some of the popular culture that I experienced. Especially in my older books (non-Valiants)

I haven't bound HARD Corps yet, but my plan is to break it into 2 16 issue books. The 32 issues are just too big for one volume for me.

I also am binding my only complete set. I figured they were just sitting in the long box, not getting read and I wasn't ever planning on selling them, so why not bind them and actaully read them. So my complete set of VH-1 and VH-2 are going onto my bookshelf, not filed away in a long box.

Neil and Steve- thanks for the info. Knowing that there are others that turn their only copies into hardbacks has convinced me I think to go ahead and do it as well once I have the books I need. Now I just need extra copies of Harby 30 & 31 plus HARD Corps 19 & 20 to bind in with the Harbinger book eventually. Have to remember that when I'm scouring the quarter bin at the LCS. Once I get a series complete (probably HARD Corps at this point) I'll probably come back to read through this thread again and get the details down to send off my first order.

Another question (that might have been asked already)- what do you do with wraparound covers like X-O #0? Fold them closed inside out so that they open with the whole thing visible?
