Most of the smaller shops don't in my area. They'll give away 6-12 comics (DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image and Archie are almost always included)

The biggest shop in my area (Acme Comics in Greensboro) does give away everything listed. It's an insanely large stack of comics, let me tell you. They even had Transformers movie posters and such last year.

So you might want to ask around about what your LCSs are getting.

My LCS refuses to participate saying that the publishers should shoulder more of the cost burden. He said he has to buy them at near regular comics prices and then he's expected to just give them away. He puts up the posters and flyers, then uses his quarter bins for the give aways instead.

I've resorted to finding a dealer on eBay that sells me a complete set for just over his cost every year.

It seems like there's a little more new material in these every year and I'm hoping these will one day be a niche for collectors.

Too bad VEI doesn't have something to offer on Free Comic Day. It would go a long way as far as exposure goes. Could help generate a sustainable buzz for the Harbinger movie... :hm:

I would have made plans to do this months ago, if I were in control of VEI Marketing...

Yes. If they had something, it would have been super. Great way to get Valiant back on the mind.

Maybe even a dad that collected books During Valiant's heyday, is now bringing his son (or daughter) for the first time to a LCS, and ....... boom goes the Dynamite..... what.... :o ... "there is going to be new Valiant comics... wow."

Two new potential buyers. :thumb:

No point in peaking too early on any potential buzz from tieing in to the proposed movie. :)

That would arguably be unsustainable with no prospect of regularly published material or the movie on the imminent horizon.

It could be, if they printed chapters of new material on the internet to follow-up the Free Comic Day promotion. Do it like HEROES, with a 12-chapter monthly graphic novel. Or do it like a comic strip, and do several panels a day. Not only would the buzz be sustainable, it would grow, IMO. (And of course, if the story is actually good)...

i think he is lying to you. i really dont beleive that he has to pay regular price for these books.

this is a excellent oppurtunity for comic shops to bring in new customers. i dont see why they wouldnt want to take part in this. i know that in my shop they always make out very well. not sure how everyone else does it. but you have to buy something in the store in order to get one free comic. then later on in the week if there are still some left. (there always is quite a bit) you can have whatever you want.

No reason to do so, but okay. And it's not like he has to pay full cover, but it's like he has to pay the regular amount he would for a 32 page book, roughly $1.00-1.75, about half price give or take.

Oh, he does particiapte, but he refuses to pay for the FCBD books. He gives away books that he's already paid for and didn't move before. He says it makes more sense than just giving away even more money.

Yeah. Whenever they are ready to start putting stuff out regularly, they need to put something out for FCBD. Hopefully next year. I've added books to my sub that I've tried only because they were free on FCBD.

I vote for a Q&W / Shadowman split FCBD comic. :thumb:

I don't know about dcbs, but Mail Order Comics has slipped in a couple of random FCBD edition book into my monthly shipment for the past couple years. They also let you purchase (pre-order) specific books at their cost - which is about a quarter each, not full wholesale value of regular cover price. This was the first year I ordered any specific books.

Any retailer that says they have to pay their normal full wholesale price for the FCBD books is lying.

My understanding is that they will throw a couple random books into your May order. I think if there are specific books you want though, you can email Cameron and he'll get them in your shipment.

It sucks because I graduate on May 3rd so I can't go. Also, Andy Smith (from the later X-O issues) will be doing free sketches at my LCS on the 3rd.
