$2.50 and $2.95 cover prices... What do you have?

Post by greg »

Ok guys... here's a quick question...

Take a look at your copies of:

Book 1 - Visitor vs. The Valiant Universe #1
Book 2 - Visitor vs. The Valiant Universe #2
Book 3 - Destroyer #0

Tell me what cover prices you have for each book... and how many of each...
(You can use the "Book 1", "Book 2", labels in your replies to save time.)

Thanks!

Greg

Greg it is unclear that the comic has a 2.50 cover price. You better send it to me to let me check it for you.

I know that I should know this, but what's the dif? Is $2.50 worth more than $2.95?

For the lazy (me) what other Valiant's correspond to the release dates of these three issues? Possibly other issues have the 2.50 variation. Or perhaps there's a reason the list is confined to these three issues that I'm not aware of?

Are these Newsstand/direct edition variants or something else like a price adjustment test in certain markets?

This should fire up some of the smug 100%ers around here....

Doing a quick check last night, I noticed my Destroyer #0 was a $2.95'er. I should have a couple more to report on when I run across them.

Right now, the issue is proving that the $2.50 books exist...
and getting a feel for about how many of the $2.50 books might
be "out there" since no one has really paid attention before.

According to information from Seaborn Adamson from 1994-95...
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/1961/newsstnd.htm

There are only three Valiant books which exist with both the $2.50 and $2.95
cover prices...
The $2.95 cover is a "Direct Sales Edition" according to the UPC,
and $2.50 cover is a "News Stand Sales" version according to the UPC.
There is also a difference in the "thickness" of the cover used on the books.
(The cheaper book uses a thinner cover.)

Because there are differences in the cover price...
ValiantComics.com will soon list both books on the site/checklists/etc.
The $2.50 book will be considered a "Price Variant" because it is
not the standard distribution version of the book.

There are other Valiant books from the same time period
which say "News Stand Sales" in the UPC box. They are otherwise
identical to the "Direct Sales Edition" books with the same cover price
and the same type of paper used in their production.
This is NORMAL because the same is true for most Marvel and DC books
from the 1990s... there are both "Direct Sales Edition" and "News Stand Sales"
for most comic books from the 1990s.

However, it is not "normal" for there to be different cover prices
on the books unless the books are considered different versions.

Thus far, it looks like we only have three of these $2.50 "News Stand Sales"
versions in the Valiant Universe.
(Yes, there's also Shadowman #0 for $2.50, but it was a direct sales book
that was lower priced because it is non-chromium.)

Someday we'll know everything about Valiant, right? :P

(P.S. Watch for a special page devoted to Seaborn Adamson
in the future on the ValiantComics.com website!) :)

I found that I have a copy of Bloodshot #35 that is a newsstand copy, but there doesn't appear to be any difference from the direct sales copy. Is there any way to find out which Valiants were released with newsstand editions? It would probably be a very difficult challenge to put together a complete newsstand edition set.

book 1 2.50- 1 copy (YES!)
book 2 2.95- 1 copy
book 3 2.95- 1 copy

i see from sonic dan's post that his v vs vu is like mine-it does not say "newstand" in the upc...

i have some other visitor books that do(thanks knight!)-though the have the identical price.

i'm so stoked to have a $2.50 issue...who'll trade me a cear for it?

What seperates these "news stand" versions is the cover price. There are other "news stand" books but the cover price is the same. I also think the Visitor vs Valiant direct has a cardstock cover and the news stand is normal stock.

Destroyer 0 - both
Vis v. ValU #1 - both (I have an extra $2.50 cover one if someone wants to trade - not in the best of shape though VG/F)
Vis v. #2 - just the $2.95 still....

I've got a Magnus #64 Newsstand edition... I remember the paper quality being different, that's for sure.
