Milestone is no longer dead

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

Within a year, Static will be the only one appearing regularly.

It's a doomed idea from the get-go.

Sad but true. It'll be Charlton Comics 2.0

Actually, given that it won't be an individual imprint but the characters are to be entwined within the full DCU, I expect some longevity.

Static seems destined for Teen Titans, so I see some staying power there. McDuffie owning the characters, having some degree of oversight (presumably) and writing JLA makes me think it is a certainty we will see a Milestone 'big gun' (either Hardware or Icon I'd expect) in a full or reserve capacity in the League. I imagine we will also see a set up for a revised Shadow Cabinet book and lineup, so I think to say they will be gone again in a year is a tad pessimistic.

What excites me most is the proper coda to the 'old' Milestone Universe, as well as collected editions of a set of books I love dearly.

Now since the old and new iterations of Milestone will be seperate (but similar) entities, once the ending books are out of the way for 'old' Milestone, does that 'old' universe resume DU status whilst the new stuff is DCU - a DU fiend wants to know the consensus....

I would use Charlton and Gold Key as the basis of deciding the status of the old Milestone Universe in that even though there are Charlton characters appearing in the DCU and the history is refered to, the Charlton line is dead. The same way that when VALIANT was in full force, Gold Key was a DU. As such, the Milestone U is a dead universe.

I am absolutely thrilled that Milestone is back. I am optimistic with McDuffie in the lead that some high quality books will emerge. I am hopeful that quality will allow the characters to appear regularly for at least a few years.

How many Charlton characters have ongoing series right now with their orginal versions?

None.

The sad and simple truth DC is only after this line because of Static Shock's cartoon show and his appereance in one episode of the JLU cartoon show and for Dan Dibio to try and his job.

I'm with Leon here.

Milestone has a great roster of well conceived characters and their 'father' is still an active voice in the DCU.

Static may well be the most prominent addition but I wouldn't be too surprised if Icon, heck even some of the Blood Syndicate don't 'stick' all it takes is one writer to find a voice with them.

I conceed it's a different thing, but I'd draw attention to how Peter David has taken on Layla Miller, a character created specifically for the House of M crossover, who could have died with it, but now lives on in the regular 616.

The Charlton characters, even if they are legacy, still live on in the DCU in some quite substantail ways, Milestone can do the same.

(sorry for the rant, huge soft spot for Milestone)

Funny you should ask - David Kim (Xombi) has already appeared as an alternate reality (note not alternate Earth in the DC multiverse sense) version of Green Lantern. His appearance was mainly supporting/cameo rather than fron and centre, but according to Dwayne McDuffie another has already appeared, although I need to re-read the books to be sure.

It looks as though the new Shadow Cabinet line-up includes Icon, Hardware, Donner, Blitzen, Iota, Twilight and Payback.

Static is due in Terror Titans #3 I believe.

Having thought about it more, i would love to see Icon again.
That book really made me jump and get excited when it came though on import day.

Loved Brights art on the original title and would love to see him again.

Although the character was essentially Superman, im confident the right creative team could make this a really special title.

I loved Icon also, but I think many miss the point about the book - it wasn't about Augustus Freeman, it was about the growth of Raquel Ervin and Augustus Freeman after they found each other.

Look at the major character beats in the published series - by and large they occur for Raquel. One of the best books of the Milestone line for my money. I really want to see a proper coda for the title since it went unfinished, and since we have been assured that will happen, I hope that the assurance is proved to be true. And Bright was the ideal artist for the title. I miss the book and its supporting cast as well, particulalry darnice and most of all Buck Wild!

1. I understand that collected editions will be made, and you said that the success of the titles as released will dictate how many are released from the whole line. When do you think we may see the first of these? It would have made sense to have some ready to go on the back of the JLA appearances.

2. Dan Didio has previously indicated that DC will publish books to finish the Milestone line as was, which you have echoed in here - again what kind of ETA can we expect?

3. Will I ever learn more about Gloria Mundi? (I re-read Static Shock: Rebirth of the Cool last night and this morning).
1. The first is already in production, it's being remastered, with new color. The title and date haven't been announced yet, so other than telling you this much, I'm keeping mum.

2. I just got the contracts this week. It will be a two-issue, 96 page mini-series that wraps up the old continuity and, rather intriguingly, sets up the new DCU status quo. Since 80% of the script was written in 1997, I'm pretty close to done. More after DC announces it.

3. She will appear in JLA #27.
So the case seems conclusive - it is a continuation and Milestone is truly not a Dead Universe.

Wow remastering sounds good, I wonder how much of the line they will actually be able to reprint though. 96 page mini will be a must-buy :thumb:

I first learned about Milestone Comics in school of all places. Our English teacher handed out pamphlets to each of us to read at the beginning of class. It was about the first black superhero line that was starting up called Milestone from DC. She discussed it with us on how it was a groundbreaking achievement for minorities. There are some good concepts there. Hardware, Icon, and Static should make it and survive in the DC Universe long after the hype dies down.

DC has Steel so I don't see Hardware being used anymore than Steel is (or was). Icon will just become a second-rate Superman clone, and Static
might make it but chances are he'll reduced to a reserve member of Teen Titans.

I hope I'm wrong but DC's track record in the area of merging their universe with others is very poor to say the least.

I just cannot get into anything DC related other than Batman. It seems like EVERYTHING is convoluted and writers are not being held to the DC Universe continuity.

I never read any of the milestone books from the 90's but it sounds like quite a few believe they are good, quality reads, so I might have to go back and pick them up and/or get the collected editions.

Hardware could be DC's version of Iron Man. Even if Icon becomes a second rate Superman clone; Superman clones have done well in the DC Universe. Conner Kent became his own character in Teen Titans. And a well-known Superman Clone, Bizarro is very popular with DC fans. Bizarro is a favorite of Geoff Johns himself. But I agree DC's track record is poor when they incorporate other Universes into their own. I'm still waiting for the Wildstorm merge and the significance to it. The only thing thus far is that the Wildstorm Universe is part of DC's 52 Multiverse.
