The story is 1,000 copies of the comic was printed up and sent out as Christmas cards to friends of the company.
You know what that means...most people who got them were not comic fans...probably read through them...and tossed them away. It also included a coloring book section...which means some copies probably have a whole lot of Crayola.
How many exist today? If 100 survived I'd call that a high number.

Western owns the rights to Defiant and Broadway? Really? How did you find out about that? Do you have a link?
You know what would be sweet? If Western bought the Acclaim/Valiant characters back, came to Shooter, and said, "Hey, we're getting back into comics again. Here are all the properties you had before. Have fun!"
Oh, man, THAT...would be sweet. Could you imagine what Shooter could do with Gold Key/Valiant/Defiant/Broadway all rolled into one? Oh, man!
Does anybody know how to contact Western Publishing?

That's all huh?ManofTheAtom wrote:According to what I've read, John Taddeo tried to buy the Crossgen universe but lost to Disney (hence his joke, heh).
If he wins the bid, all I ask is the following:
1.- Hire Jim Shooter and allow him to revive the universe the right way.
2.- Use the original universe as the basis. Even eight years after the end of the original line, there are plenty of ways in which the flow of the story can be revived without missing a beat.
Just look at Magnus.
There were 10 years or so between the last issue of Magnus and Magnus #1 by VALIANT yet it was all in the same continuity. It could be done again.
3.- Ignore all the VH 2 crap and pretend it was a really bad dream (which in fact it was, a collective nightmare all VALIANT fans had to put up with...)
4.- NO REBOOTS.
Reboots work only when necessary (i.e. Man of Steel, Batman: Year One). When done on a whim, just to attract attention, or just to make a creator happy, they always fail.
If the creators you want to hire don't want to work with you because of the characters you're using, then don't hire them. Instead use creators who actually want to work on these characters.
Get talented creators, no matter how popular or unpopular they may be, how known or unknown they may be.
Talent will assure great stories, popularity will only assure you paying extremely high page rates for creators that won't last a year on their books.
Learn from the mistakes of Birthquake and VH 2.
Don't trade your Jorge Gonzalez (X-O Manowar) and Kevin Vanhook (Solar) for Ron Marz (BK X-O) and Dan Jurgens (BK Solar) or Mark Waid (VH 2 X-O) and Warren Ellis (VH 2 Solar), in the end it won't be worth it.
The more popular the creator the greater the odds are that he'll leave you with nothing to show for your efforts.
5.- Learn from revivals of dead properties done in other mediums, like Star Trek.
The movie revived the franchise after a 10 year hiatus, a revival that lead to the creation of four new shows, nine movies, countless comic books and novels, not to mention all the merchandising like toys, T-Shirts and other products.
Anyway, that's what I can think of off the top of my head. Maybe others will have suggestions of their own...

John,
I wish you the best in trying to get the rights to the Valiant / Acclaim characters.
I just want to be able to purchase the same quality comic books stories that were produced once upon a time.
Jim Shooter would be GREAT, but Bob Layton is pretty frickin' AWESOME too! Just the thought of X-O Manowar and Bloodshot being created again...
Best of luck - I REALLY hope it happens!!!!!

seriously, keep in mind that we're the most rabid fans...we've been "living' the dream" for the last 10 years.
so even the HINT that our beloved characters and stories might be coming back drives us into a frenzy.
we all intensely love and revere the work that came before, and we've been burned before as well. there was an attempted magnus and solar startup a couple of years ago...both failed.
we've gone thru the "vh2" era...some of us liked that direction, some of us didn't...we still are sometimes divided on those lines...like the north vs. the south..lol
basically what i want to convey to you is that we all hope to see these characters in print again, you included. if you care for the characters and the stories they were apart of then i know you'll do everything in your power to do them justice.
we just get a little excited sometimes...excitement is a good thing, better to have folks worked up about the possibility of the return of valiant then have them be totally apathetic to the notion.
we've all got opinions on what we would do if we were running things, if you can, look at our opinions, see what works for you and what doesn't. all we can really ask is that whoever gets these properties will listen to the fanbase...that was something that really made shooter and company special.
thanks for listening!

John Taddeo,
I'm not going to sit here and tell you what to do. I don't know the first thing about running a buisness except that money can be tight. With that said, I would say I would be willing to work for free (at first) for you on the rights if you aquire them. Being a student, I'm more concearned with building a protfollio and resume than making money, my savings will last me a while yet. I pencil, ink, and have started dabbling in coloring. I am majoring in Fine Arts, with a focus on Studio Art. Good luck with all that!
P.S. To all Valiant Fans and Forum Goers, This is my first post in this forum, the people seem great, and I can't hardly think of more worthy subjects than the Valiant universe!

Praise Moon Knight!
I have a good feeling he may be getting a series some time soon. Marvel Team-Up #7 will have to do for now.

I was an intern at Marvel which led to a full time position in marketing once the internship was over. Interning is a great way to get your foot in the door in very competitive employment industries such as comics, film, music, sports marketing etc.cptfishstick wrote:John Taddeo,

BTW, as you build that portfolio, put your full name and phone number on EVERY PAGE. It's so common a business card or cover letter disappears and then you can't contact the artist.
Congrats on your first post. Very ambitious of you to offer your services. Good work.
