So, there I am on Saturday night, preparing to wrestle for the first time in two months since a nasty injury took me out for a bit. I'm studying the casts on my fingers, hoping and praying that wrestling tonight will not aggravate the injury, and wondering why I'm going to do this when both my doctor and my wife forbid me to do so. I begin the process of leaving myself behind, and letting the anger of the character take over, entering the "zone" that blurs the line between Aric the person and Ric the wrestler.

And then I hear a heated arguement beginning. I'm trying to focus on my main event match, so I attempt to tune it out.

The argument gets heated. Soon, EVERYONE around me has an opinion, and everyone is expressing it as loudly as possible. Nearly 20 wrestlers are going at it with a passion that underlies a true emotional connection to the subject of debate. So, finally, I snap out of the "zone" and tune in to hear...

"...she had sex with ONE MAN! ONE MAN DOES NOT MAKE HER A SLUT!" shouts wrestler one.

"But it was her boyfriend's BIGGEST ENEMY!" interjects wrestler two.

"They WEREN'T DATING at the time!" says wrestler three, throwing his arms in the air.

"But still, it was his most HATED ENEMY!" repeats wrestler two.

"No, it wasn't - it's not like he had sex with her while wearing the stupid Green Goblin mask!" retorts wrestler four.

Yes, they were arguing about the recent storyline in Amazing Spider-Man.

I love my sport.

Holy crap, until the Green Goblin mask came up, I thought the argument was about one of the wrestler's "valets" being a slut! Do they even call them that now? In the WWE, I guess the females are all called "WWE divas" whether they are female wrestlers or just eye candy.

Funny story but sad that they were wasting time discussing that piece of crap Spidey story!

Oh, that was just the point that I tuned in to the conversation. Once everyone agreed to disagree about that one, they went into Captain America vs. Batman, and later into who was the better black sci-fi role model - Lando Calrissian or Mace Windu. That led to one of my new favorite lines:

"See, in the original trilogy, they at least tried to make everyone diverse, and good guys as well as bad guys were of different races and ethnicities. But the new trilogy? They might as well call it 'Crackers In Space'."

We are such geeks.

Oh, and I also thought they were talking about a valet at first. It wasn't until the Goblin reference that I caught on and started beating my head into the wall. :)

It's a good thing they aren't Valiant fans and started arguing about whether Sting was gay. That could really be confusing!

That's pretty funny. When you think about it though, it makes perfect sense that Professional Wrestlers would like Superheroes. Hmmm...I miss Stone Cold.

Yeah, I just seen that advertised on Raw last night. I wonder if this is just a one shot or if he plans on returning.

That's my vote too. I was pretty disappointed to see them trash an old character like that. I know they want to shake up the stories a little, but that was just stupid.

I guess they'll have Aunt May blowing Doc Ock next.

Hey now - not to hijack my own thread, but I have to disagree slightly.

You can think the story was horrid. That's fine.

You can think what Gwen did is wrong. That's fine.

But for the life of me, I can't understand how she can be called a "slut". The point made by one of my fellow wrestlers was quite succinct - as far as we know, Gwen only had sex with ONE PERSON her entire life. Let's be honest - in today's world (hell, even back then in the free love 60's and 70's) having only had sex with one person in your entire life is considered rather prudish.

Was the person older than her? Yes.

Was it quite possibly not the smartest thing to do? Yes.

But if that's the criteria for being a slut, then I daresay every single one of us on these boards are hypocritical, skanky, dirty *SQUEE* - as is every person we meet over the age of 16.

So hate the story. I'm down with that. It certainly won't be going anywhere near *MY* "Best Spider-Man Stories" list.

But labelling the character a slut? I just can't wrap my mind around that.

Using the term "slut" doesn't really fit Gwen, but I guess it's used as an easy reference to her because she did something that to most people would seem to be a bad sexual decision. What should be the proper term be for a girl who would not have sex with her regular boyfriend for some reason, but then goes and has sex with some other guy whom she is NOT in a relationship with? Maybe the word "*SQUEE*" fits a little more in her case! :x

EDIT: can't believe that word was bleeped, the word I used is the formal name for a female dog, just to spell it out.

As I recall, she and Peter were broken up at the time. I could be incorrect, though.

However, to answer your question:

"female"

Man, they were broken up?? Starting to wonder if she really did something all that bad, then. :?

I didn't think it was a good story, but I'm not really a regular Spidey reader. It seems like some of the Spidey fans are mostly upset because they had this image of Gwen as the virginal, innocent and perfect girl, and that the "Sins Past" storyline tarnished that image for them.

Gwen was presented that way; that was a large part of her appeal and that's why readers had higher expectations for her.

But, IMO, any teenager that gets knocked up by Norman Osborn is a slut. In a real-life situation I would call it an extremely disappointing situation, but with GS ... she just was being held to a higher standard.

Maybe it's like the JFK deal. That guy is a much more highly regarded president than he should be, mainly because he was cut down too soon.

ok, so yes, I admit to being a Gwen fan. I, along with many others, held her above standards because she never had any negative things this big associated with her and then JMS had to go and make her f* Norman. and the reasoning was all so stupid. He was and older guy, he had this attractive appealing persona deep down, and that was all it took for Gwen to give up her virginity (if he is indeed the only guy she ever had sex with) to the guy. and she didn't even have the smarts to think about sexual protection. and the worst part of this is JMS, who had Peter be okay with all of this. i'm sorry, but if i found out my first true love had unprotected sex with the guy i hate the most, well i'd pretty much despise her forever.
