I think I missed a post somewhere, what major announcement?

I think Myron is right though, if this company is on the verge of BK, where is VEI?? I believe SOMEONE will pick up these characters though if they go BK .... Marvel, Image anyone? Publisher's that are already established with cash flow and as we saw with the Valiant characters, it wouldn't take a ton of money to get them

VEI may not have that kind of money right now. The three hard covers could not have generated very much money, so I imagine they won't have much $$ to wave around at an auction.

Cyberstrike wrote:I don't THINK that Classics Media owns them anymore (and I might be wrong so don't hold me to that) the rights were sold to a British company called Entertainment Rights and it's ER that is in trouble.
The rights weren't sold to Entertainment Rights - ER bought Classic Media, lock, stock and barrel. It's a subsidiary.

As for some of the other comments on this thread, the odds of the characters being sold off one by one are about as good as a supermodel delivering a pizza to your house tonight and having sex with you. The value is in everything as a lot. If you were selling off a complete run of a comic on eBay, would you sell it issue by issue or as a lot? It's the same thing here.

Also, for the record, the Gold Key characters and Defiant and Broadway properties aren't where the value is. That comes from identifiable properties like Lassie, the Lone Ranger, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Mr. Magoo, the claymation Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Underdog, Lamb Chop, and other characters that people on the street would know. Even among comic book characters, Classic Mediacontrols Casper, Richie Rich, and Little Lulu, all of which are more well known than Solar and Magnus (and, arguably, Turok).

Nobody at Entertainment Rights is getting worked up over Solar and Magnus. Whatever the Dark Horse Archives are bringing in, it's chump change compared to what the better known properties can net.

It also just occurred to me that back when Golden Books Family Entertainment (formerly Western Publishing) was bought by the combination of Random House and Classic Media, the value there - the reason for the purchase - was the numerous Little Golden Books that had been published over the years. I mean, Western Publishing changed its name to Golden Books Family Entertainment for a reason. They didn't call it "Gold Key Family Entertainment." The comic book properties were just part of the lot, so it looks like history may repeat itself in the future.

Well I may have exaggerated a little by using the term "major", supposedly JS is gonna talk about his new creative endeavor which we don't know about yet, it could have something to do with VE, it might not.

This aint Shooter related but in the link the had some Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick stuff.

Doc Hammer
- Special Guest

Doc Hammer was born in 1626 in Hamar, Norway under the name Erik Von Hamer. Being the son of a humble cobbler, not much was expected of the young man other than to cobble and to not complain about all the cobbling. But Doc was destined for greater things. "Greater things" being not cobbling. By 1648, Doc had relocated to Leiden, where he found his master in Rembrandt. It was there, in his 23rd year, that Doc met "She Who Was To Deliver The Kiss Of Eternal Youth." Today, Doc still paints in oils and does menial tasks for The Venture Bros.

Jackson Publick
- Special Guest

Jackson Publick III was born in 1971. He decided to put his limited skill-set to use in the Creative Warfare Department of the Marine Corps Psi-Ops Division. His most notable achievements during his short tenure were designs for something called "The Mindcopter" and a squadron of giant, flying metal lions which, when reconfigured and joined together via electrical current, formed a giant, flying metal man. Neither project was ever put into production and, upon learning that he had plagiarized the latter, the Marine Corps discharged Publick summarily but honorably. Drawing on the powers and influence of his amazing Bilderberg Group superpals, he then made up The Venture Bros.

That is so frickin awesome. Venture Bros. owns!

Exactly.

As much as I love DEFIANT, you literally could have a mega-SF guy create a very similar concept with tweaks for substantially cheaper.

There is no 'Name' value attached to any of those titles (specifically DEFIANT and Broadway). I mean seriously, you can create Fatale now, and just name it something else and it would have near the same marketing oeuvre.

In terms of existing fan coolness, sure I'd love to own it and tap some past creators to finish Schism :cloud9:. Hell, I want to throw it in a hardcover. Take my $5, I don't want Lassie!
I think you have made some excellent points Jay, and your reasoning appears very sound. Even if an auction does occur (no guarantee at this time), it is uncertain when this would be or who will have capital to invest. Right now the strongest-looking opportunity that I can see is some kind of continued arrangement with DH, in which the properties would be more like their original incarnations than their VALIANT iterations, and even that is not certain by any means.
