My Rambling Valiant Story
Hello!
I have been collecting off and on for 30 years now. I was buying books straight up until around the time of X-Force 1. Between that and all the versions of McFarlane Spidey I just had enough. I quit until 2000 when the bug hit me again. Long story short I totally missed the whole Valiant explosion. My only exposure to Valiant was flipping through 30 copies of Turok 1 and Rai 9 to get to the comics I was interested in.
I continued to ignore Valiant until a few years ago when I bought a collection from a guy. In one of the boxes was a few Valiants. I figured they were garbage but pulled them out to look them over anyway. Well the first two books I pulled out where Solar 1 and Magnus 1. I read them and then all the rest of the Valiants in the box. I then did a web search on Valiant to try to learn what the company was about and ended up on this site. I lurked here for a year or more before finally signing up so I could see the buy and sell forum. People here are helpful and knowledgable and it just fueled the fire more. This is one of the best comic communities out there. Thanks for running this thing Greg!
I think the main reason I love to collect Valiants other than the stories is the hunt. I can go out and dig through a fifty cent bin and possibly find a treasure. Sure if you want to throw out a lot of many you can get just about any Valiant on any day (except the BS 0 platinum) but the fun lies in looking for good deals. I can go to a show and come home successful. When I was concentrating on silver age books I would get frustrated a lot because they were either too expensive or too trashed. I can come home with a bounty of great Valiants without spending the kid's college money.
I am down to about 60 Valiants to finish my VH 1 set. I almost don't want to finish and lose the thrill of the hunt!
