Which Flaws Bother You Most?
I'm running through my Amazing Spider-Man collection grading everything. I hate books with certain types of wear and am ok with others.
Hate:
- Rusted staples
- Water damage (I try to never pick anything up with h2o damage)
- tears / chunks missing
- huge store stamps in bad spots
- scribbling - names, gibberish, etc
- scuffed up spines
- detached staples
- sticky stuff / tape residu / mung on covers / books
I'm much more at peace with these:
- Subscription crease
- light, neat date stamp or pen/pencil date
- creases, folds,etc
- detached centerfolds
If I have a book that appears to be Very Good (4.0), but has a big subscription crease, I'd much rather have that book than a book that looks VF/NM (9.0) with rusted staples.
I've been doing page counts and clipped coupon checks on all of my books. So far, ok except for one copy of the second Kingpin which I bought recently.
I'm up to about a dozen issues that I'd like to replace so far for various reasons. Mostly, it's rusted staples. I'm finding that for the most part, my taste for wear is the same today as it was when I was buying these books in the late 80s / early 90s.
What kind of wear ticks you off and what are you ok with?

The worst look on a book is white marks on the spines or dings on corners.
Followed by offcut covers.
I can handle light creases or lines across the cover, date stamps etc.
On my DU books ill take anything over VG to get the gaps filled, but if it's for my nicer DC, Marvel or premium books, they can have no visible fault whatsoever.
When selling im pretty fussy, so probably mark down more than i need to.

What bothers me the most is when I would otherwise have a 9.4 or 9.5 but the person who graded it thought an effect on the cover was in fact a defect. Case in point, the "Unity" logo. One book was listed as having a "color break in left hand logo" while the other book, which was exactly the same in appearance, was not listed as that. This proves that CGC doesn't just have "human error" but that the people handling the items for inspection need to learn the facts about what the book SHOULD appear like before offering a grade.

I met a man at the LCS who was furious that his otherwise "mint" Wolverine #..I think it was 3? Maybe it was 1?...came back 9.0 because of spine roll. Looking at it, I would never have graded it that and the guy that owns the store was flabbergasted as well. "I figured it was a 9.5", he said. Either way, the book has some real eye appeal, despite the supposed roll. Sometimes I think the CGC folks are on Crack.400yrs wrote:Spine rolls suck too.

One of my Green Lantern books has water damage. Of course, it's something like issue 72 or 73...of the 2nd volume. Not a hard book to replace but it was once in damn good condition. I'm super *SQUEE*.HaloReach2010 wrote:Cant tell you how many times I find a nice copy of a book, then realize the back cover is warped from water damage.....superman-prime wrote:water damage for sure
