I didn't know Fables 1 had a variant. The last I saw a copy of Fables 1, it was going for 30 dollars and that was at a con about 2 years ago.

I went to my closest LCS, they only got 40% of their order (2 books), they put them on the shelf today at $10 and both were gone in an hour.

I don't like seeing these books start like this. Skullkickers did the same thing. This can only mean that speculating is making a return at least on a small scale. That's not good.

I love seeing books do good like Chew or Morning Glories, but only after people have actually had a chance to read them. Presales for $30 is just stupid and indicates a small implosion may be on the horizon again for smaller books like Image.

2) The comic is being sold as a four issue series, but it’s a stealth ongoing title. You may be tricked into something that may run for 80 issues or more.

i have been saying this for ages.

Overall though i cannot expect people to not be able to flip books fast for a quick buck if there are people foolish enough to chuck money away like this.
It's much like variant covers in a revolving door kind of way.
There are always people coming in at the same time as people are smart enough to be leaving.

I'd rather have a speculator's market than a static market surviving on selling multiple copies based on variants.

At least out of 100 speculators you'll pick up 1 - 4 new, regular readers. On top of that, if a speculating buyer gives up on comics because their gue$$work-purchaseof a book didn't net them a billion dollars, then that's not someone who was going to remain in the hobby anyway.

I do think it is silly that every Image title that comes out, the day it hits shops is instantly $20+. Can't be that great of a book, but I could be wrong.

I think there is an upswing for sure, but only time will tell if people keep falling for the same trick.

It only takes a few well connected people to get the ball rolling,
I said Chew was not a good one to invest in and by that time the prices were too high anyway and there always cheaper bargains to be had when prices hit $40+, but Chew is a really enjoyable read and quite unique.
Others that have followed since are not of the same quality and do not deserve IMO the $$$ or the attention.

I dont thing there are many similarities between this and the previous hyp BS from the 90's, so not much to worry about, but i just would rather see people on the buying end being lead to try 10 new books over a hot new 1st print of something they are being told is the next best thing.

Gotcha...
I hadn't really heard of much big Image hype other than a few titles over the years. Chew, before that Walking Dead, and before that the Cliffhanger launches were a thing in '98 or so.

although on a hot title even 2 3 4 ect still sell well down the road ive been picking up 5 of WD each month and always done good

Nah. It's just that it's only happening with Image books so it seems like it. And it's definitely not all Image #1 ongoings. There have been a plethora of Image #1s that released without any appreciation at all.

Chew deserved it. Morning Glories is still up for debate. One thing both those books had in common was that they became popular after people read them.

Skullkicker and 27 were both talked up alot by the creators on websites, podcasts and such and exploded before release even.

One example of a recent Image #1 that didn't receive any hype is Halcyon. Guggenheim (Marvel ASM writer) didn't do any interviews or podcasts or anything. If he did, this would've blown up and IMO would've had more right to than Skullkickers.

I just finished reading Halcyon #1. It was really good. I didn't order #2 (which is out), but after reading this, I'm definitely interested to see where the story is going.

On the inside front cover, it says, "Every villain is the hero of his own story." I thought that was pretty cool.

Here is the solicit for #1:
