CGC BOOKS VS NON GRADED CGC VALIANT BOOKS

IS IT REALLY WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY TO GRADE????????????SEEN THE AUCTIONS LATELY ON EBAY AND THE PRICES ARE ASTRONOMICAL.

HOW ACCURATE DO YOU THINK CGC GRADES COMPARED TO CGG?
ANY INPUT WILL BE APPRECIATED

Personally, I believe that some valiant books in very high grades will sell at higher values than they really deserve, at the moment. In a year or so most pre unity books in any grade will be much cheaper to get.

How do you figure? Much of the Pre-Unity stuff has rotted in $0.25 bin across the country. Sure there are a lot in collections, but how much was dumped back onto comic stores during the bust years?

I think Pre-Unity books will begin to be respected again. Heck, prices are starting to rise and most people still equate Valiant with trash. Once people respect the issues again these books will come out of the $0.25 bins. Without any more good deals people like us will have to pay fair price for them.

I think the Vailant hangover is about over. I don't think prices will ever be as low as they've been for the past few years. Heck my local comic store (Bedrock City) is a nationally recognized store and they've just recently pulled their issues from the $0.25 bins and are now actively SEEKING Pre-Unity issues for cash.

As for CGC, I've always thought slabbed books were over priced. If you're sellin, slab 'em! If you buying, go with the virgin books. (Insert crude joke here.)

There are actually several different questions in this topic...

Questions:
1) Is it worth it to professionally grade Valiants?

2) What's the deal with CGC and CGG?

3) Will the prices hold up the way they have been?

Answers: (or, at least some attempts at answers)

1) It is worth professionally grading Valiants WHEN the dollar amount
received is more than the cost of the book and the grading.
So, if the grade is 9.4 or lower... odds are you've wasted your money getting
the book graded.
If the grade is 9.6 or higher... odds are you'll make more than the cost
of the grading.
The bottom line is... any spine indentations, corner problems,
or the tiniest damage to your books really means "don't pay to grade".

2) CGC is the industry leader in comic book grading.
CGG is a we-didn't-even-try-to-appear-different-knock-off of CGC.
What does CGG offer? Lower prices. But that's basically it.
Even IF (and it's a big IF), even if they grade tougher... or better...
They don't have the confidence of the industry...
so their lower prices don't really mean much. It's all about confidence.
Right now, there are at least 2,500 CGC books on Ebay.
There are about 150 CGG books, mostly from the same seller.
It would be nice if CGC had some competition to lower prices
and speed up their service... but CGG won't be it.
The writing's on the wall. It will take a major player in comic books
to rival CGC... not two guys in Oregon who make it up as they go.

3) Honestly, I don't believe Valiant books will continue to sell for $200+.
Tonight a CGC 9.6 Solar #10 sold for over $200. That's incredible.
I've been watching Valiant on Ebay as long as anyone and I'm stunned.
I don't think it can be sustained. I'd love to be proven wrong long-term,
but I'm confident that a CGC 9.6 Solar #10 will sell again for $50 someday.
Which means $200+ is at least four times too much for a CGC 9.6.
A CGC 9.8 on Solar #10 might be a different story...

HOWEVER, if I could see the future, I would have bought a few more
Predator vs Magnus trade paperbacks when I had the chance.

I agree with a couple of statements in particular in this thread:

1. Pre-unity Valiant's won't drop to quarter bin levels again.

2. The current CGC high prices can't last as contrary to what some believe....there are still a lot of high grade issues sitting in collectors hands unslabbed.

All in all I like what Greg is doing, which is slabbing books or rather purchasing slabbed books becuase he loves Valiants, and wants to own as many slabbed as he can. That's not to say he can't prosper from it down the road....who knows

Whoops!! I meant pre unity books in any GRADED grade...sorry. I was thinking of CGC pre unities. i figure those will drop big in a little bit. I dont think pre unity issues in general will. I agree they will be respected and see a sustained price increase

Which is really the THING, if anything, that CGC will ultimately do, after the several year shakeout from 'new' to 'established' that CGC goes through: establish a market for ultra high grade books that didn't exist before. Before CGC, it didn't matter if a book was a (potential at that point) 9.4 or 10.0...it sold for the same price, except in very few cases (such as those who were willing to pay 2X or more Guide for 'cherry' copies of any particular book.)

NOW, however...the super grades of 9.8-10.0 means that EVERY book, no matter how common or despised, can have a new life in perfection. Solar #10 10.0? If one exists (and it's not likely, the binding process was awful on the book) then in 1999 it would have sold to anyone for $5 or less. In 2004....$300? $400? Who knows.

AND....it's a huge vindication to folks who, for years, took extra time picking perfect copies, or 'asked' better prices for super high grade books and were scoffed at....'you want HOW MUCH for that copy of Hulk #340? I don't care HOW perfect it is, it's only worth $10! Good luck trying to get more for it!'
