I just listened to this one again because I just read Harbinger Files #2.Dr. Solar wrote:The Visitor vs. Only The Valiant!

I see why the guest left the podcast.
In the 41 minute mark, Sean says, "I actually liked the storytelling thing of not knowing how Pete ended up that way....."
That's not a "storytelling thing". That's a lack of a "storytelling thing". When I read the Harbinger Files #2, it drove me nuts how out of left field it was.
In the 43 minute mark, one of Sean's 3 big storytelling problems is that they don't explain why Pete went back in time. How does that not contradict the 30 minutes before of arguing with ZWH? Why not just guess at that too?

Are you saying you agree with Sean or ZWH? Both? Neither? I am confused, kind sir400yrs wrote:I just listened to this one again because I just read Harbinger Files #2.Dr. Solar wrote:The Visitor vs. Only The Valiant!

I don't think that the story of what happens to Pete needs to be part of the story of the visitor. The story of what happens to Pete is probably an interesting story, but the events in that story don't matter to the story of the visitor (as it was written).400yrs wrote:In the 41 minute mark, Sean says, "I actually liked the storytelling thing of not knowing how Pete ended up that way....."Dr. Solar wrote:The Visitor vs. Only The Valiant!

Saying that the Visitor was flawed storytelling because they didn't explain how Pete ended up as the Harbinger is like saying that the original Star Wars trilogy was flawed because they didn't explain how Vader was seduced by the dark side.
It is a story based on the results of a previous, but untold, story. Like, well, every story ever written, except maybe the Bible.
Yes, I think the story of how Pete became the Harbinger would be an interesting story, but it is a separate story. It isn't required to make the Visitor a complete story.

I see what you are saying about the Visitor story in and of itself. You don't need that piece to enjoy it on its own.Dr. Solar wrote:I don't think that the story of what happens to Pete needs to be part of the story of the visitor. Yes, I think the story of how Pete became the Harbinger would be an interesting story, but it is a separate story. It isn't required to make the Visitor a complete story.
However, in the podcast, you seem to completely shut out the concept of The Harbinger and The Visitor as they pertain to the Valiant Universe as a whole. And frankly, continuity is what the Valiant universe was built on.
The Pete Stanchek story (and Pete vs Harada) was built up over the course of 25 issues. Then, the next story with him is Harbinger Files #2 where Van Hook doesn't flat out write it, but it's pretty obvious that he is The Harbinger. Then he is next in The Visitor. No explanations.
I don't know why you'd try to completely separate The Visitor story from the rest of the Valiant universe unless you are just trying not to *SQUEE* off the writer, Kevin Van Hook. To try to gloss over the story as a part of the interwoven Valiant universe and defend in the podcast that it's not poor storytelling is bogus, IMO.
I'm guessing that KVH is probably involved with VEI, but based on what I've read from him, I hope he's not.
And the point about Vader in Star Wars doesn't work. If there was no Harbinger 25 nor Unity or whatever else Pete appeared in, then yeah, the Visitor story as a starting point is fine (as was the case with Vader in Star Wars 4).
Kevin Van Hook's story telling is more like saying we first see regular Vader in SW 4. In the next film, he shows up as a cross-dresser with no explanation. Then in the 6th film, he is a midget again with no explanation.
Sometimes, I think you like to just argue the opposite side from ZWH no matter what. You have to consider the Valiant universe as a whole, no?

I think KVH is busy with his production company doing movies for the sci fi channel last I knew, no time for comic writing.400yrs wrote:I see what you are saying about the Visitor story in and of itself. If we all agreed on everything, and never seriously discussed the merits of opposing viewpoints, we'd be the Valiant equivalent of Fox News.400yrs wrote:Sometimes, I think you like to just argue the opposite side from ZWH no matter what. You have to consider the Valiant universe as a whole, no?

As for considering the Valiant universe as a whole, I think in some ways, yes, and in some ways, no.
The Valiant (or any universe) is just a collection of stories. Many of the stories are related, I think that's one of the reasons we like them.
When I say "Story", I mean one complete story, of the basic sequence:
Beginning Status Quo --> Conflict --> Resolution --> New Status Quo.
Pete being the Harbinger is the "New Status Quo" of the untold story of how Pete becomes Harbinger. That "New Status Quo" then becomes part of the "Beginning Status Quo" of the next story, which is The Visitor arriving to join hands with Harada to fight off some weird aliens or something like that (I do think the story fell apart at the end).
Put all these stories together that may be related or may not be, and we have a mythology. There is a definite mythology in all of the comic worlds we love, and we usually refer to this mythology as continuity.
I will completely agree if someone wants to say that there is a hole in the Valiant mythology because the Pete-to-Harbinger story wasn't told, but I don't think that a hole in the mythology makes any other individual story bad, as long as that story is told well.

Just listened to Ep. 55 and I have to say that if you were to keep Jonesy on as the new 3rd wheel... well... I'm not against it. This was a very good episode from a factual P.O.V. It wasn't as entertaining as if Zeph were arguing whatever point, but it was still right up there with being one of my favorite eps (I'd also like to see MOTA return). I'm also really happy that you guys are releasing on a more regular schedule.
So, in closing, keep up the great work!

While I certainly am not an extremely outspoken character, I will do my best to bring my own flavor to the podcast
Keep in mind that i've never done anything like this before, and I honestly can't hold a candle to the knowledge of my co-hosts...lol. I'd like to think that my presence is that of the excited "noob" to all things Valiant
Maybe I should argue for the sake of arguing though, hmmm? Lol...
