What comics are you reading now?

Been reading Ed Brubaker's run on Daredevil. Good stuff and some of the art is stunning. Not quite as good as Bendis and Maleev's run but an excellent way to follow up. Was this well received when it came out?

Definitely.

DD was awesome and well-regarded up until Diggle. Waid is doing it justice again.

Captain America and Bucky #620 - Brubaker (writer) and Samnee (art) - I stopped getting Cap a year or so ago, but this issue was only 35¢ from DCBservice and featured Samnee who I wanted to check out. This story features Bucky's childhood. It was a really good story and I guess it's a 5 parter. I'll be on the lookout for the trade or HC. Samnee is a fairly new artist. I think his stuff is great. It's a bit cartoony, but also a bit like Michael Lark. I plan to check out The Mighty Thor which he worked on and I've heard great things about.

Vignettes - The Auto-Bi Comix by Jim Valentino. This book was filled with personal stories by Jim Valentino. Great stuff.

Marksmen - Image comics - This book was a mess. Not recommended. The art was nice though.

Yeah I'm enjoying the Waid stuff. It's being released twice this month which will definitely get me more involved.

About to finish Vol. 3 of the Alan Moore Swamp Thing trades. I've been working my way through it slowly, just reading it when I'm in the mood and not feeling obligated to a daily regimen. I have to say that I'm still enjoying it, though. I would almost say that Moore's Swamp Thing is the comic book equivalent to a Modernist novel in terms of the technique and progression. Another reason why I've been going so slow on those trades is that I've been simultaneously reading things on my Kindle DX that I've had for a month or 2. Right now I'm reading through William Gibson's Burning Chrome for the first time in probably 15 years or so. Must say I'm getting much more out of it now than I did in Jr. High. I'd say that same thing for Moore's Swamp Thing if I'd read that in Jr. High.

Takio - All Ages HC from Bendis and Oeming under the Marvel Icon imprint.

This was only $9.95 for a digest sized HC with approximately 60 story pages. I bought it to read and see if it would be something my daughter might like. This was Bendis' take on a kids book. Many times, I wondered if I had skipped pages and the dialogue was a bit clunky in spots.

In the end, I decided not to give it to my daughter because I think it would leave her scratching her head too often at some of the clunky conversations and spots where things felt like they were skipped.

Ah well.

Rachel Rising #1 by Terry Moore. Abstract Studios

This is definitely the shortest $3.99 comic book I've ever read. Waaaaaay too short. I counted the story pages and it was either 16 or 18 story pages. Not much dialogue. Not much there at all.

I'm going to just wait until the collected edition is out on all future Terry Moore stuff.


His last series, Echo, was collected and I feel a bit gypped. Here is the breakdown:

30 single issues @ $3.50 each = $105 for the total series
6 trades @ $15.95 each = $95.70
1 complete SC edition for $40

I went the trade route on Echo and I still don't have 5 or 6 which seem to be tough to find for cheap. I should've just waited for the SC if I knew it was coming. That's a nice value especially with discounts you can find. Therefore, I don't thinkg I'll be supporting his stuff in singles or trades.

Wow, that is quite a price difference in the Echo single issues vs collection. I bought it single issue style, but will probably wait on Rachel Rising for the trades or big collection. I also bought Strangers in Paradise single issue style for however many years that ran (well, not the 1st 3 issues unfortunately, but the rest). I know the trades may not come out if n one buys the regualr issues, but I'm going to risk waiting.

reading Bone: The One Volume Edition. I received it as a freebie from a seller on the CGC boards, what a great freebie! The book is over 1300 pages, but is surprisingly a VERY quick read. I have only been reading it regularly the last couple days and am already up to page 987. It's a very engrossing read, but I think it has become slightly overrated by a lot of comic fans. It's very good, but it seems to be more for kids than anything.

I have only been reading it regularly the last couple days and am already up to page 987. It's a very engrossing read, but I think it has become slightly overrated by a lot of comic fans. It's very good, but it seems to be more for kids than anything.

It's definitely a fantastic book for young readers.

Just read Terminator vs. Robocop #2 from Dynamite. Now the story's picking up. Alot of time jumping and mixing it up with the storyline from the Terminator 2 movie.

I have tons of new stuff to read, but I felt like re-reading 2 of the new DC 52s.

Swamp Thing, I've read twice now and I'm leaning more toward putting it on my pull because I know it's going to tie into Animal Man.

Animal Man, I've read 3 times now and I'm loving it. I kind of see it as similar to the new Daredevil. Waid embraced the blindness and incorporated that right into the story in neat ways. Lemire is doing the same with Animal Man's powers. The family element only makes the book more interesting for me.

I saw it as incredibly "safe" for kids, but I thought the story had deep emotional levels of storytelling that I found very compelling. It's one of my favorite series ever. Top...30? Top 50?

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1 by Bendis and Pichelli

This was a good comic. Although there is nothing new at all in this comic, seeing a different kid become Spidey is kind of refreshing. I'm probably not going to keep on going with it though.

Solar #8 - Enjoyed this story. I though the final part of the origin was a little cheesey, but otherwise I am sad that #8 is probably the last issue from DH.

DareDevil #3 - Same vibe as issue 1&2. Really good story and art.

Was finally able to read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen V's 1 and 2 and the Walking Dead Compendium recently. I'm probably the last board member to have read these books. All three good reads but was especially impressed with LOEG V1. Definitely now one of my 10 favorites. Walking Dead was a mixed bag for me. Considered dropping the book after the first 70-80 pages but stuck with it all the way through. Can understand why some are hooked on this series. Its about as good as it can probably be for a zombie book.

Picked up some recent Mark Waid books. Unknown V2 Devil Made Flesh from BOOM was as good a read as V1. The Marvel miniseries remake of Ruse was excellent as well. Very wise of Marvel to bring Waid back to revive the series he originally launched for Crossgen.

Anyone read Phoenix Without Ashes from IDW? Wasn't bad but I kept wondering if Wall-E was going to make an appearance somewhere in the series.

The first LoEG was amazing. I saw the movie before I read the book. Quite different. V2 was not quite as good, still VERY good, just not as good.

Currently reading the Incorruptible trades with Terry Moore's Echo complete trade to soon follow. Incorruptible has not disappointed thus far but would say the early issues of Irredeemable are a slightly better read. Have heard good things about Moore's Echo series so looking forward to reading it.

Anyone reading House Of Mystery, Northlanders, or the Unwritten from Vertigo? All three look interesting and may try them.

I read Unwritten #1..... I didn't like it.

But I was just talking to a guy and he said that it started slow and then really got good. He discussed a few plots points and it seemed interesting. But I don't want to read a bunch of not so to get to the pretty good.

Frank was terrific, Green Lantern was as good as you would expect and Mister Terrific wasn't Terrific.
