It's going to be interesting to see what happens to demand for this book if and when a new Harbinger title is launched.
I really think the price of Harbinger 1 is limited to the upside. How many people really want this book in 9.8? There's 48,000 copies of this book, and that supply will more than be enough to satisfy the small amount of readers on this board and a few new collectors that might come into the flow. I remember saying during the time of the 2k sale, that there was no way that price could sustain that.

Sure this book is tough to get in 9.8, but when 9.4 copies could be had for 20-50$, 9.6s for around 100$, and raw ungraded copies (which will more than likely be decent as everyone was aware of Harby 1 when it came out and thus kept it in good condition) can still be had for $10-20 bucks, I just don't see that 100+ multiple sustaining itself. Someone say they think the same buyer is gobbling up multiple issues, well we know that can't last. If someone is loading up issues in the 500 range to sell at 1k and up, as soon as the first 1k sale is made, supply will flood the market and drive the price back down. And look at that guy who tried to support the price at 1k by buying as many copies as he/she could, that didn't turn out so well.
I'm taking a wild guess here, but the buyer may not be buying the issue thinking it's going to increase much in value. I know I'm buying a lot of the key books in 9.8 because I want them in my collection not because I think they will ever be worth much. As has been said, I feel $500 is a good price for the book due the the supply and the demand.
How do you know that? We have history to prove otherwise with that guy who was buying all he could at 1k, then ended up unloading copies at a loss when it was clear he wasn't able to support that price floor anymore. If what you say is true, then we could probably do a vote on the boards and see how many people actually want a 9.8 in their collection. I never said $500 was a bad price, but I wouldn't be looking to buy copies to flip, the demand for valiant slabs is very limited. With 48,000 copies there will be more than enough raw, decent looking copies floating around for people to pickup at pennies on the dollar of what CGC 9.8s sell for.
It has never been the case where there were really enough of Harbinger 1's for sale. I guess there was a period in the early 2000's where that may not have been true, but outside of that...

I think you are mistaking print run for supply. The print run isn't relevant if they are not for sale. Can I go to Mile High and buy Harbinger 1 today? Yes, if I want to pay $50 for a copy without the coupon. Can I go to LoneStar and buy one? Yes, If I want to pay $19 for a VF copy with the coupon, and I doubt that book will last long at that price. Can I go to my LCS and buy one? Very, very doubful.

If we look through eBay completed listing, we see very, very few Harbinger 1's for sale alone. There's a Fine copy with the coupon that went for over $15 and a "NM" copy that went for $26.

What this all adds up to for me is that a small increase in demand for this book, say double to triple where it is now, and the price is going to go places where it hasn't been since 1992.
I think a lot of the copies not for sale have been hanging around in storage for 15 years and may start resurfacing due to renewed interest in Valiant. That's not to say there won't be a price increase, or that 48,000 copies will suddently appear on eBay, just that SOME increase in demand will be met by an increase in supply.

There's a "shop" here whose owner swears he's got 50 long boxes of Valiant books in his basement he is going to pull out and start sorting before the new books come out. He may be exagerating, and he may not have a Harbinger 1 in any of those boxes, but he's also probably not the only dealer who was around in 1992 that still has unsold Valiants to pull out. Might make for an interesting time sales-wise.

Of course, there will be a lot of Valiants put up for sale at 20 times their going price by people trying to cash in. That should correct itself once people realize there are 400 auctions for the same books going on.

Anyway, just some thoughts I was having sort of about this topic.
This post has been carefully constructed so as to add absolutely nothing to any discussion or topic.

Well I just bought a NM- copy for $10, and I see lots of auctions with Harbinger 1 packaged in lots that averages out to 10-15 bucks. I think you're also forgetting the sheer number of books that are hoarded on this board, I know there's guys here that have dozens and dozens of copies, so if this book were to hit $100 (or even less) raw I would see many copies come out of the woodwork.

As I said before, if you're a collector and just want a 9.8 for that collection, then the downward or upward price really doesn't matter.

Guys,
Interesting discussion about this book. Can't wait to see what happens over the next year or two. I personally predict we'll see 9.8 copies break a grand in the next twelve months if the new line works out.

I was only commenting on this sale because I was the bidder. I was hoping to get it for $500, but ended up paying $515. I have been looking at several copies over the last few months and after getting some good advice from ckb I decided this was the one I wanted.

I don't know whether it will go up or down in value, but it won't matter as it will be in my collection for the next 20yrs along with the rest of the books I buy.

I like the boldness! I'm willing to bet that the average selling price is less than 1k. Who knows, if might hover around there. And this bet doesn't count if you win the lottery and then go out and buy every copy on ebay ;)

Errr... I think you guys are forgetting what happened after the Harbinger movie option announcement. The price was at 1992 levels for a little while. I feel like a dumbass for not selling off my stuff then, because now, it's a $15-20 book again.

I plan to try and grade out all my stuff before the launch so I can be cready in case that happens again for the new Valiant.

I don't see any reason why this book can't go back to the levels it was at after the movie option announcement, once the relaunch gets going. :thumb:
