I don't understand people's aversion to variants. If you don't want them, don't buy them! What am I missing that makes them so reviled?
I was around for the original variant hysteria and fiasco, but these are different times!

I'd rather have a nice Variant with some good art over crap art and some sparkly crap they used to print by the billions in the 90s like the gatefold, embossed, cut-out, holographic chromium prismatic covers. bleh.

Easier said than done for those of us who are insane completists and must posses every version of every book. In a way, it's better for our sanity and our wallets if fewer variants are made.
It's like telling someone with Tourette syndrome, "If you don't want to shout, don't shout!"

And I'll apologize in advance if there are any board members suffering from Tourrette syndrome. I mean no offense. Just using an example.

As bribri mentioned, it's a problem for completists. The Beyonder wrote:I don't understand people's aversion to variants. If you don't want them, don't buy them! What am I missing that makes them so reviled?
I was around for the original variant hysteria and fiasco, but these are different times!
It's also a problem if you believe you're buying something that could have value in the future, only to later find out you didn't buy the right one,
so the one you have is the common one, and no one wants it... and it will never be worth anything if there are 3 other versions that are harder to find.
This basically killed the sportscard market. If it wasn't the refractor hologram limited signed rookie card, then it was junk, even if it was a rookie card.
When even the good stuff is worthless, there's almost no point in collecting.

Thanks, fellas.
Another perspective: as a completist myself, I'm happy that there are variants being put out to give me something to complete! Strange, I know!

Re: SO......
I actually like variants - just not when the price is going to be up there because:
A) Limited
B) Super-Limited
C) Who The
Is Going To Buy 200 Issues Just To Get 1
Cover?!
Answer to C would be me, luckily I didn't have to buy 200 covers but I paid a pretty penny for the 1:200 JLA Varaints from DCBS - Got 1,2,3
- all all the other standard variants as well to include 2nd & 3rd Printings.
I gots others bills to pay man - I can't be throwing down like this all da time

I think that sums it up pretty nice right there. Re: SO......
I'm down with the variants. I agree--if you don't want one, don't get one. As long as there's enough "artistic merit" for one, go for it (yeah, I've seen the "negative image" ones and it always leaves me scratching my head. Of course, if they ever produce a "negative image" of Bloodshot, I'd get it.
But I'd call it the "Rampage Variant" to help justify my fanboy hypocrisy.
