Order the variants at DCBS?

Post by cjv »

Okay, so I can put my next order of the variants at DCBS - $20 for the 1:20 variant of Bloodshot, and $50 for the 1:50 variant of Bloodshot (as well as $20 for the 1:20 variants of Harbinger #2 and XO #3).

Looking at past sales of the variants for XO, I see some sales in the $80-$100+ range for the 1:50 variant - but I also see some with a buy it now of $20 or $30.

What do you all think? Put the order in with DCBS for the variants? Or wait and cross my fingers, trying my luck on eBay?

I am also interested in what other members think about this. I think $50 for the 1:50 variant migth be worth it if you are a variant or completionist collector. I don't think I can expect it to go much higher than $50, but if it does then good for me.

I kinda suspect that the 1:20s aren't going to sell for $20 for that long. The 1:50s will be a crap shoot though, but I'm willing to take that bet with Bloodshot because I'm not all that impressed with the cover to begin with. I may change my mind if another Paradise offer comes along, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to get it.

Meaning the 1:20's will be higher or lower than $20?

Most 1:20 for other publishers are $10 or so. But those publishers aren't Valiant. :P

Lower. There are so many selling for under $20 now, that I can't see them getting much higher. Aren't the highest prices for variants usually right there at launch with everyone scrambling to get them? :?

Yes, but we haven't actually seen what Valiant 1:20 prices will be at the launch. The sold copies on Ebay have been Buy-it-Now pricing, not actual open market bidding.
The Buy-it-Now prices under $25 have all been taken.
Now for regular auctions, this one's at $30 with a day to go: http://www.ebay.com/itm//10873235684" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Compare the print run of a 1:20 Valiant book to Chaos Effect Alpha Red. They're probably the same. Does $20 buy a CEAR? :D

I really don't know what to expect in the coming months/years.
Obviously, the 1:50 price should always be a ceiling on the 1:20 (probably by at least twice as much), but what is that 1:50 price?
$60 (meaning 1:20 is $30 or under)? Or $100 (meaning 1:20 is $50 or under)? More? Less?

It's hard to say in the first week.

I do believe that the 1:20 of first issues will have a higher print run than the 1:20 of #2, #3, etc., but it will also have a higher demand.
It's likely that the #1 issues (especially if the books have important first appearances) will be priced higher than later issues with lower prints, because of the importance of the #1 content.

I think that the 1:20 variants will be picking up pace. Certainly they won't catch the 1:50 pricing - BUT EVERY confirmed 1:20 variant on issue one has been BREATHTAKINGLY cool.

The Aja X-O is probably the best of the bunch. The Harbinger Aja is amazing. The Bloodshot Aja is outstanding. The Archer & Armstrong is iconic.

While us crazy fanboys will pursue everything, many people will see those covers will look VERY purty...

This is true, we haven't seen a lot of actual auctions. The ones I saw weren't bidding high but, admittedly, I didn't follow them to the end of the auction when the prices really get up there. I'm actually banking on later variants not holding their value, because I would love to have a complete collection but I just can't do it at $20 and issue.

I think ultimately this will be decided by the success or failure of the Valiant launch (I know, Captain Obvious over here). So far, I've actually been more impressed with the 1:20s than the 1:50s. I wonder if A&A will change that? :hm:

End of the day, I really suck at speculating. I'd like to get better to try to support my habit, but I guess it's a good thing I really enjoy this hobby.

They must have just changed the prices. i downloaded their monthly order spreadsheet at the start of the month and they're listed at $20 and $50.

At the new prices, I will not be ordering them.

I think that's going to be the general rule of thumb then I was seriously considering ordering from them but at this new price point I will not.

Yeah. They did. I have a feeling they may have alot more X-O #1s sitting around than they would like. So they raise the prices on these to cover the regular copies they have to buy. I don't blam them.

Personally, I'm likely out on pre-ordering the variants after Harbinger. I don't really care for the Bloodshot 1:50 and A&A doesn't get me that excited either. When they do Shadowman, I'll likely go after that one.

I am still in.

Remember this thread?

Suddenly, $1000 for the set of the 1:50 isn't quite the crazy man anymore...

I just know that the increasing demand and request for these upcoming issues will make more people hoard, and then...

Well...

If anyone IS still holding onto the set to sell, it's gonna be rare and or far between.

Then...

Wow, glad I put the order in at $50 when I did!

I am not going to pay $100 through an advance order website.

Heck, at those prices it is going to make skipping the 1:20 variants easy too.

I can honestly say that I don't care if I miss the Bloodshot 1:50, especially if that's the price I'll have to pay. It's a shame about the 1:20 Aja, though, I really liked that cover. Hopefully Paradise will continue his 4 cover deal going, though.

$1000 for the set (I assume you mean all four 1:50 comics)?

That seems a bit high to me. That's $250 for each one, and the XO one has reached a $250 price point yet. There will probably be MORE of the Bloodshot and Archer & Armstrong ones, since everyone is seeing what the book is doing.

Personally, I think the Bloodshot and A&A variants may end up being the lowest printed and therefore, possibly the highest in demand. However, I just have no personal interest in them. I'll likely pick up the Aja variants at some point, but I'm not going nuts for them.

I got my order in before the price increase so it looks like I'm still getting them for the original price. If they are this amount next month I'm not sure if I'll bite or not.

Are there any other reliable sources for these books besides eBay? The LCSs in my area are guaranteed not to be getting these. Pre ordering is ideal in case what happened this month with X-O happens again in the months to come. That being said I can't wait for my comics (and my QR X-O variant) to finally ship this week from DCBS. :)

If these are the prices going forward I am definitely done buying variants. especially if I spend $50 for a book that is not guaranteed to be NM.

At least mail order comics makes you buy the number of comics necessary to get variants. The 1:20 would 20 books plus one more the variant @ 2.79 per book. That is appoximately $59 for 20 books and the 1:20 variant vs. dcbservice @ $50. And with dcbservice you not guaranteed a variant @$50 if they don't order enough.

Just something to think about
Pull List: I only buy TPB's, HC's and Hellboy comics
