Harbinger Thought Balloons...
So, I've read that the "There's always money in the banana stand" thought balloon is from Arrested Development and I wanted to look into the cover further. The first one that stood out to me was "Explosion in Italy, I knew it"... X-O #3 is going to have X-O attacking Italy (on the cover, in theory), so do you think this thought bubble is reflecting this? Also, what other thought bubbles can you place with possible events?
I'm going to clean this up later, so that it's easier to find the quotes on the cover. Also, I put (????) for anything where this could be what it's referencing, but it could also be something else.
List below:
1) "There's always money in the banana stand" - Arrested Development
2) "Explosion in Italy, I knew it" - X-O #3 (????)
3) "Everything's coming up Milhouse!" - The Simpsons
4) "Ma Ya Hi Ma Ya Hu Ma Ya Ha Ma Ya Haha" - T.I. - Live Your Life (????)
5) "There's always free cheddar in the mouse trap baby!" - Tom Waits - God's Away on Business
6) "He's right. People are corporations" - Referencing Mitt Romney's "Corporations are people" statement
7) "Los asesinos seriales tambien tienen sentimientos" - The serial killers have feelings too (Spanish translation)
8) "A quien dios ama, le llama " - Whom God loves, He calls to them (Spanish translation)
9) "Freaking damn ace in the river" - SDCC Valiant Poker Game
10)"I can't believe Drive wasn't nominated" - Referring to a Ryan Gossling movie
11)"I miss Chapelle" - Referring to the Dave Chapelle Show
12)"TEBOW!!!" - Tim Tebow, football
13)"Eli is straight thug" - Eli Manning, football
14)"This kid must be high" - Talking about Pete (????)
15)"What is this, 1985" - Popular Twitter hashtag (????)
16)"I think I love Rihanna" - Pop singer

Was it "Ace on the River" that refered to the San Diego poker game?etos45 wrote:So, I've read that the "There's always money in the banana stand" thought balloon is from Arrested Development and I wanted to look into the cover further. "Ma ya hi ma ya hu" probably refers to the internet video of a guy singing Dragostea din tei.

Am I blind? Where's the San Diego poker quote? I'd think that might be the Valiant poker game.magnusr wrote: Was it "Ace on the River" that refered to the San Diego poker game?

The Ma ya hi is either T.I.'s "Live Your Life" or O-Zone's "Ma-Ya-Hi" (from a quick search). Since there's a Rhianna quote right next to it, I'm favoring T.I. (especially since Joshua said there were hip hop references in the thought bubbles).

Far down on the right side. EDIT: Found the confirmation: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35980&hilit=ace+on+ ... r&start=38" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;etos45 wrote:Am I blind? T.I. is sampling O-Zone's song (which has many names, Dragostai din tei, mayahi or numa numa - the latter also refering to the video I thought of, but your explanation is more likely). The Ma ya hi is either T.I.'s "Live Your Life" or O-Zone's "Ma-Ya-Hi" (from a quick search). EDIT, side note, there's both "Talk to me like that " and "talk to me like that baby". A mistake?

Okay... I see what you're saying now. I thought you were saying something else. I'm adding it and good catch!magnusr wrote: Far down on the right side. EDIT: Found the confirmation: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35980&hilit=ace+on+ ... r&start=38" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

At the risk of sounding like a Rhianna fanboy, she is singing that in the T.I. song (so not a sample), but there's no doubt that it's taken from the YouTube thing. So, should I list it as O-Zone, Dragostai di tei, etc, etc, etc?magnusr wrote: T.I. is sampling O-Zone's song (which has many names, Dragostai din tei, mayahi or numa numa - the latter also refering to the video I thought of, but your explanation is more likely).

I'm starting to love these quotes.

In this case, "le" is an indirect pronoun. That phrase would specifically translate as "calls to them" and would include an understood subject rather than an explicit one.greg wrote:Probably "whom God loves, He calls".etos45 wrote: 8) "A quien dios ama, le llama " - Whom God loves, called (Spanish translation... is this right?!)

Re: Harbinger Thought Balloons...
I don't know about the 8th Day thing but it just sounds like an old proverb because of the way it rhymes. I will talk to a few friends of mine who grew up in spanish speaking churches and see if it sounds familiar.greg wrote:So it should be "He calls to them"?Chiclo wrote:In this case, "le" is an indirect pronoun. BTW - Thanks Chiclo and Greg, I made the changes!

One last thing, if it is a call back to the "eighth day", that is AWESOME! ...

Re: Harbinger Thought Balloons...
Didn't someone say they were in the comic shop, and someone picked up the book - specifically because of the thought bubbles on the cover?

All the thought bubble covers were sold out at my LCS while the awesome pull box variant had about a dozen left on the shelf.kevinbastos wrote:Didn't someone say they were in the comic shop, and someone picked up the book - specifically because of the thought bubbles on the cover?

Re: Harbinger Thought Balloons...
Also, very small next to the Mi ya hi balloon is one that says "I think I love Rihanna". So I think it is safe to assume that is the song referred to.
There is also one that says "I can't believe Drive wasn't nominated." Referring to the Ryan Gossling movie. And "I miss Chapelle" refers to the Dave Chapelle show (a personal fave).
And two sports references "TEBOW!!!" and "Eli is a straight thug."
Finally could "This kid must be high" refer to Pete himself?

Seeing the Drive bubble prompted me to finally go watch the movie this weekend. And I agree with the bubble!
This post has been carefully constructed so as to add absolutely nothing to any discussion or topic.

Re: Harbinger Thought Balloons...
I googled it and apparently #whatisthis1985 was a popular twitter and tumblr hashtag. Given VEI's familiarity with social media, it is likely referring to that.etos45 wrote:Maybe?magnusr wrote: EDIT, side note, there's both "Talk to me like that " and "talk to me like that baby". Also, 1985 was the year "Back to the Future" takes place. A good slogan for VEI if you ask me.

Added all of them!

I also think that the "This kid must be high" was talking about Pete, so I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one.

It's actually a good idea to have a somewhat disinterested party write the random thoughts of passers-by. The writer is tainted in that he might want to plant seeds of future plot points, etc.etos45 wrote:I believe he said she helped with them.jmatt wrote:Just a side note: Josh Dysart said in the podcast that his girlfriend wrote many of the thought balloons.
