Big Apple Con CGC submission
Went to the con today to submit another batch of books to CGC. However this time I did my shopping before I dropped my books off. There weren't really much deals to be had as most of the dealers were selling their books at full guide prices. *OUCH, are they really there to sell or display their wares?!* However there were a few dealers that was willing to bargain. Off the top of my head, here's some of the stuff I got that's worth mentioning:
Giant Size X-Men #2 (VF/NM) - $30
Harbinger #1 (NM+) $30 *Yes I'll explain about this one*
Amazing Spiderman #265 (VF/NM) - $2 (1st Silver Sable)
Amazing Spiderman #299 (VF/NM) - $12
Amazing Spiderman #345 (NM) - $3
Uncanny X-Men #390 (NM) - $1 (Death of Colossus)
Best deal out of the bunch is the UXM #390 and Giant Size X-Men #2. As for the Harbinger #1, I usually never pay that high for one, but it was one of the nicest copy I've ever seen. Most Harbinger #1's usually have some sort of spine color chipping, but the spine of this one is almost perfect with perfect sharp corners. The only defect this book had was 2-3 microscopic speck/crease which you can only see if you hold it to the light. You can only guess that I took this book straight to the CGC table. I'm positive it should get at least a 9.6, but who knows...maybe I can get lucky.
There weren't much of a Valiant presence at the con, but I do notice more dealers had them compared to the last show. Only down side is they were all priced according to Wizard. Yes, I bought the only Harbinger #1 that they had there lol. Anyways here's the list of books I subbmitted to CGC and my estimated grade range.
Harbinger #1 9.6 - 9.8
2 copies of X-O Manowar #1 9.6 - 9.8
X-O Manowar #4 9.6 - 9.8
Turok #47 9.6 - 9.8
Magnus #12 9.6 - 9.8
Hulk #340 9.6 - 9.8
Daredevil #168 8.5 - 9.0
Daredevil #270 9.6 - 9.8 *1st Blackheart for those wondering why
*
Miracleman #1 9.4 - 9.6
Uncanny X-Men #266 9.4 - 9.6
Let's see in 6 weeks how accurate my grading is......

Went back to the Big Apple Con today to catch some of the closing sales before dealers packed up. Overall got some nice deals on some Silver Age X-Men's and McFarlane ASM's. Most shocking was this one dealer who brought in a copy of Ms Marvel 18 which I couldn't find on Friday. It was in 9.0 - 9.2 condition and I talked him down to $17! acclaim Let's just say I felt a bit relieved buying it as I have had a serious hard time trying to track down a high grade copy. Other decent deals included the following, which are all in NM condition:
Uncanny X-Men #244 - 50 cents
Uncanny X-Men #283 - 50 cents
Solar #11 - 33 cents
Magnus #10 - 33 cents
Punisher #1 - $5
Amazing Spiderman 309, 313, 318, 323 - $2 each
There were a bunch more of the McFarlane spidey's for $2 each, but I was a picky *SQUEE* and only got the ones that looks like 9.6 or higher. razz
Aside from that, I also decided to try out the CGC signature series with Jim Lee. Yes finally got the chance to meet the big man himself. Only thing I didn't like was trying to get a CGC witness, which was a pain in the *SQUEE* since they aren't willing to wait on the line with you. I mean if the the artist was at the show, wouldn't it make sense that a book signed by him is already authentic? Anyways I managed to work it out wit the CGC guys and got them to witness the signing of the following:
Uncanny X-Men #248 - 9.4 - 9.6
Uncanny X-Men #256 - 9.6 - 9.8
X-Men #4 - 9.6 - 9.8
FYI, CGC charges $24 to do modern signarture series.
Uncanny X-Men #244 - 50 cents
Uncanny X-Men #283 - 50 cents
Solar #11 - 33 cents
Magnus #10 - 33 cents
Punisher #1 - $5

I'm always amazed at the prices some of you are willing to pay for stuff.
I guess that's why I'm the cheapest one of the bunch....
I've missed out on a LOTTTT of stuff....
But I've also never paid $$$ for anything, only to witness it slowly slide into oblivion.
I'd NEVER pay $12 for a VF/NM Spidey #299.
Heck, I wouldn't pay that for a #298, and look what it's guiding for in the new guide!

Re: Big Apple Con CGC submission
Welp, took CGC a bit longer this time to get the books back to me, but I just got them today. While most of them did hit the marks as I predicted, I was disappointed in a few of em.Escaflown4 wrote:Went to the con today to submit another batch of books to CGC. Predicted:
Harbinger #1 9.6 - 9.8
2 copies of X-O Manowar #1 9.6 - 9.8
X-O Manowar #4 9.6 - 9.8
Turok #47 9.6 - 9.8

Daredevil #168 8.5 - 9.0
Daredevil #270 9.6 - 9.8
Miracleman #1 9.4 - 9.6
Uncanny X-Men #266 9.4 - 9.6
Received:
Harbinger #1 9.4 *Will definitely need to call up to check grader's notes*
2 copies of X-O Manowar #1 both 9.8
X-O Manowar #4 9.8
Turok #47 9.8
Magnus #12 9.6
Hulk #340 9.6
Daredevil #168 8.5
Daredevil #270 9.6
Miracleman #1 9.8 *totally surprised by this one*
Uncanny X-Men #266 9.0 *Very disappointed*
Out of the bunch, two books went below my expectations, while one got a 9.8 which I wasn't expecting. I really need to get the grader's notes for Harbinger #1 and X-Men #266. I see a lot more spine damage on the X-Men book prior to handing it in to CGC. While this will be very difficult to prove to CGC, but considering that I hit the mark pretty much on all my other books, it just doesn't make sense to have one book graded way below expectation. Anyways, I don't think it's worth creating a stink with CGC, but I will be posting most of these for sale if anyone needs them.

I'm starting to suspect that CGC hates Harbinger #1's and absolutely refuses to give them a grade higher then 9.4 unless it's 100% obvious.
