Re: Dr. Mirage!
Since the original Dr. Mirage was always running around with his wife, maybe this Dr. Mirage will be running around with a wife too?

Wow! They really snuck that one up on us, eh? Comes out tomorrow and none of us knew about it. Looks cool and can't wait to see more. Will the new Dr. Mirage also have a wife? That'd be fine with me.

This looks like an awesome remake! Hopefully Patch will work on a Dr. Mirage title. This is almost as cool as the reimagined Torque.

That would be me...would have been really cool to create buzz after the book came out. Maybe cause a run on the issue, VH1 style. I understand they want to get people in the store tomorrow, I just think a surprise would have the same sales effect.kevinbastos wrote:Who was JUST saying that they wanted a surprise not ruined?
All that being said...HOLY *SQUEE* IS THIS AWESOME!

Do you think we will be getting teaser announcements all week? That's 2 days in a row...

Nice, another new character!
I love how these announcements are being made and how interest is swirling for Valiant, they have a great way of staying relevant and keeping themselves in the public eye with their comics. I absolutely love it!

VH1 always snuck in the appearances of characters, but I don't care, I would've bought it either way.

Re: Dr. Mirage!
This is the first new announcement that I have mixed feelings about. On the one hand, I was really hoping they'd reintroduce Dr. Mirage to the Valiant Universe, but on the other hand, the synopsis for the new character given in that Washington Post article sounds so...generic.
"— the popular character who debuted in 1993 is presented anew as Dr. Shan Fong, a dedicated and detailed investigator who talks to spirits in a bid to solve human crimes."
Seriously? A detective who talks to ghosts to solve crimes? Didn't I already see that TV series on NBC with Jennifer Love Hewitt?
"Valiant said Tuesday that the contemporary Dr. Mirage is similar to the previous incarnation, a man named Hwen Mirage, whose exploits with wife Carmen Ruiz ran for 18 issues in “Second Life of Doctor Mirage” — but, added Zircher, her powers are more steeped in Asian mysticism."
Two things: Carmen and Hwen were great characters. One of the strongest aspects of the original Dr. Mirage story imho was that it featured a married couple who actually worked better as a team and acted like they were married. So instead of using two great characters, they both got scrapped for a new character? And the great origin for Hwen's powers, which made him the virtual antithesis of Master Darque, is now reduced to the generic and orientalist explanation of "Asian Mysticism."
Yeah, not loving this idea so much.

Glad to see them bring a new take on the character. After seeing the unpublished Acclaim art and script, I definitely found the premise more interesting than the original. Hopefully, this will be the case with the new version as well.

Re: Dr. Mirage!
The character design is definitely an improvement, no doubt about that. Zircher knows how to draw some fine ladies.
I need to see more, but right now I'm skeptical about the concept. The character herself needs to win me over.

Re: Dr. Mirage!
It's a Washington Post article that is very nondescript. I would be surprised if there wasn't the same supernatural bent to this character. Especially since she's being introduced in Shadowman. Maybe she'll be possessed for Darque for awhile and then that will cause her death, causing her to become a spirit. I'm excited.Xtianhardy wrote:This is the first new announcement that I have mixed feelings about. I agree, if they don't include the maried couple aspect, it would be a mistake and a disappointment. Whether the significant other is a Carmen or a Carmine, no matter (though an honest, not in-your-face portrayal of a lesbian couple would certainly be different and draw attention).
As for the powers, who's to say she will not end up with them? As of now, she is Dr. Shan Fong, not Dr. Mirage. Something has to happen for that change to take place. The original was a paranormal investigator before becoming intangible and gaining "light" power (and also appeared first appeared in Shadowman).
On a separate note, who thinks its awesome that VEI has created a true lead female character?!? We already have Kay, who as Geomancer is more of a supporting character IMO, but now we have a full fledged solo-title capable female character

Re: Dr. Mirage!
I agree with a lot of what you're saying here. Like I said, I have mixed feelings about this. What I do think is awesome is that, as you pointed out, here is a fully fledged potential candidate for a solo female character. That rules. Also, if that did make a new version of Carmen to be Shan's significant other, that would also be awesome. More LGBT representation AND strong female characters in Valiant books: I am 100% on board with that.BugsySig wrote:Two paragraphs and a one art panel will leave me to reserve judgement.Xtianhardy wrote:This is the first new announcement that I have mixed feelings about. The art in the email Valiant sent earlier looks really great, so I'm hoping that as more details emerge about the character, there'll be more to get me stoked. And you're right, there's nothing to say that she won't end up with a set of powers similar to that of the original character.

Valiant could use some major female characters, I'm glad to see that Dr. Mirage is going to be a female and I hope she plays a huge part within the universe over time. Great news, indeed!
