To be blunt, I think the question is dumb. Superman and Batman's look have changed several times to match the actors who happen to play them in the movies. It has never been asked what continuity they are in.

Perhaps I'm being sensitive.

I would not judge your reaction, but I do disagree with you.
To me, batman and superman have always looked the same.
White dudes with dark hair.
From what I understand NF was a white dude, then the same character
Was not a white dude.

That is a pretty big difference.
But that is just me.

Um, whoah. I didn't mean to be insensitive by any means. It's just that he was white, then he was black. Now, I'm reading another story where he's white. I'm simply asking because I want to know if there was a storyline that I should be familiar with, or if there is a reason for this change. To be honest, it gets confusing. I don't care if he's black or white from a human standpoint, but for reading comics, it gets confusing.
And although Supes and Bats can look different, costume changes, different artists interpretations, at first look at a page, without any word balloons, you know who they are. That is not the case with Fury. If you're familiar with him one way, which a whole new generation is now, thanks to all the Phase 1 movies from Marvel, a white guy showing up in your comics saying he's Nick Fury can be confusing, and honsetly a turn off!
Or, if you're old school, it's vice versa. And it's not a race thing, it's a continuity thing.
Didn't meant to ruffle any feathers. This is a place of positivity, and I never meant to put anything even close to negative out here on the boards! I could most definitely have phrased it differently though. I apologize for any insensitivity that may have come across, as that was not my intention at all.

I'm pretty sure he was black in the Ultimates first. Not 100% on that though...

Mark Miller's Ultimates definitely predates Samuel Jackson's portrayal of Nick Fury. I forgot which recent Avengers title I read, *gosh there's so many new ones with the Marvel Now* there was a scene where Hawkeye made a funny quip about it. Given how popular Samuel Jackson is associated with the character now, I think Marvel is officially making him black from this point on.

This is correct.

I have read that they did model the Ultimate Universe Nick Fury on Samuel Jackson though. I can't remember where I heard this though, so it may just be urban legend.

In the Battle Scars mini series, it was revealed that Nick Fury had a son with a black lady, and thus there is a Nick Fury Jr. in the mainstream Marvel Universe, who is black (half black). It seems like they may be doing this to have Nick Jr. take over, and have a black Nick Fury in the main Marvel Universe too.

More interestingly to me, that mini-series also introduced Agent Coulson into the mainstream Marvel Universe.

When I read the ultimates, their Nick Fury looked JUST like Samuel Jackson, as if to say, "if we ever do a movie, he's GOT to play Fury!"
But, he was white as recent as Age of Ultron. At what point are they going to finalize a decision here?
And which "universe" is the predominant one at this point? Not 100% up on Marvel.

What decsion? 3 diffeenrt Nick Fury's; father and son in mainstream MU, not-Samuel L. Jackson in UMU.

The original one. Ultimate Marvel has never been more than a handful of books, and always with its own distinctive trade dress.

Interesting you should say that. I would think dividing people would be a bigger form of manipulation.

People have defining characteristics, there is nothing wrong with noting those. No one would be offended if he was asking "wasn't Nick Fury bald? Now he has hair! WTH?!" But if you mention race, sexuality, etc. people make a big deal.

Now, if you start to judge people based on genetic differences (race, hair color, etc.) then you're a *SQUEE*, but you can't get around the fact that each person looks different, and some groups of people have similar characteristics. Grouping and dividing is natural. My 2 year old groups his trucks. Is he racist against firetrucks? Let's not be silly.

The Black Nick Fury was first seen in the first Ultimates miniseries. Which is from sometime around 2002 or 2003? He looked like Samuel L. Jackson from the very beginning. In fact, I'm too lazy to look up the quote, but Brian Hitch and Mark Millar have said that they intentionally designed him after Samuel L. Jackson because he is a bad-*SQUEE*.

The black Nick Fury in the mainstream Marvel U is, in fact, Nick Fury Jr. who was a secret love child of Nick Fury's with a lady of the African American persuasion. He came along after the Phase 1 Nick Fury appeared and I think Marvel was trying to make their universe match with the cinematic universe.

White Nick Fury has been white since the beginning. He has been missing from the Marvel universe since around the time black Nick Fury Jr. showed up. (actually I think it may have had to do with Civil War but I'm not sure.). He popped up in the Age of Ultron trash for the first time in at least 4 years. I guess this was one of the big surprises that the mini-series held. I was actually more interested in his reappearance than Angela's but that is a topic for another thread.

A-freaking-men. I think the "Let us be color blind" people in the world are some of the most racist and ignorant. That is a preposterous statement that is STEEPED in Political Correctness and Liberal Guilt and their perceived enlightenment. Like Tom Cruise getting all huffy when something is said about his black adopted son...."My son is black...Hmmm...I never noticed...really?" Give me a break. Almost like someone saying "Oh, I like you so much I didn't even notice you were white". People ARE different!!!! The fact that we are SO different is BEAUTIFUL! Not something that should be ignored or not talk about, but celebrated I love my black and latino neighbors and friends BECAUSE they are different, not in spite of it. We are all equal, but very different and our difference give us value to each other and the world.
