XO original art help --
A local 'antique store' blew me away with this for sale:

I havent bought it yet because i dont know what to offer.
Is it published or a really nice commission?
It's on Valiant paper stock & had 'X special' in the details.
Thank you guys!
PS -- if it's just a commission is it worth $200, or more like $50?

You might want to ask Sonic Dan. I think he's the authority on original valiant art. Pm him maybe?cmixer wrote:A local 'antique store' blew me away with this for sale:

I would concur. Talk to Dan. Greg could also likely let you know if the art was from something printed.

That's way too detailed for a commission, imo.

The fact that there are two artist sigs suggests to me that it's not a commission.cmixer wrote:A local 'antique store' blew me away with this for sale:

Actually Ray Krissing was a regular inker for Bart, after Andy Smith stopped. Andy is still the best on Bart's pencils.kjjohanson wrote: The fact that there are two artist sigs suggests to me that it's not a commission.
That piece is most likely a commission actually. It seems really familiar, I have seen a lot of Bart's commission pieces on ComicArtFans.

Re: XO original art help --
Interesting piece. As stated above the level of detail and the two signatures would be rare for a commission. But the lack of a background would be typical for a commission (though there are covers without backgound like X-O 53). To make it more of a mystery, the date and style of armor puts this piece some time before Sears/Kryssing started their run on X-O. All and all I would also guess it's a commission. Was there any text on the back or front of the piece? As for the price, I am not good at guessing, but to me at least $50 would seem overly optimistic.

Re: XO original art help --
Well after some talking to owners & stuff -- here's the story:
The owner bought a collection of records at auction & this was included in the record album lot.
They know nothing about it (ha!).
The $200 price tag is based on their eBay research & they dont want to budge.
I guess i'll pull the trigger later this week & see what i get.
Scans & such in a few days.

It looks a lot like a late issue of X-O Vol. 1, but it's not. I think it looks like a commission. I think $200 is on the very high end of the spectrum.

Re: XO original art help --
It could be production artwork. Maybe used for advertising or t-shirts or something else. Hard to know since Sears did so much artwork over the years. I hope they reign in Sears crazy muscular figure work. Plus he draws fugly women.
Re: XO original art help --
Too late, I own it.
Pics tomorrow & based on the handwritten notes, this will generate discussion.
Thanks all.

Re: XO original art help --
Had to copy the links. Now I see them.
Does it say "X-O Promo"? And "Credit page".
That should generate discussion. Anything that was scheduled for early '95 that wasn't published?

Re: XO original art help --
That could be anything. It could be something they put together and never got accepted. There are many instances in the old pre-digital manipulation days where several pieces were made and one accepted. New panels pasted on top of old panels. This could be one of those. Credit page sounds like the pages in the back with fan letters and credits, but I don't have single issues to look through and find. Either way, I don't think the value of this is much affected by whether it's unpublished page or commission. Most of this stuff is what someone is willing to pay, and the only items getting big money are actual printed covers.

Agreed -- just neat to find what 'could have been' and something authentic, but not necessarily iconic.

Re: XO original art help --
That is in no way a commission. The Inker would have been Sears himself. Like I said above this was a promo piece of some sort. Having done production and some comic book artwork you get asked to do a lot of stuff that may just be used on a flyer or ad or whatever they deem. Still get paid page rate though. That bend at the bottom and the foxing on the back I woulda told the seller to shove it at 200 and tell him he's a thief for offering bent and mildewy artwork for that price.

Looks like the kind of thing Wizard would have used as a cover (and incorporated their own title, background, wizard hat).

I don't have a scan, but it was published in Wizard. A little work and you may be able to find it online somewhere. Its from the Wizard Profile of Bart Sears issue 54 from 1996. Article was titled Here's looking at Bart Sears. The image was shrunk down and located in the upper right hand corner above the text in the article.
