DC: Where Do I Start Now?

Everything else comic-related that's not VALIANT-related.

*sigh* DC......

So the return of Valiant got me back into comical after almost a ten year break.

Then I added some Image titles (thanks for the suggestions)

I checked out Marvel NOW and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it.

DC....what the heck happened?

I like Batman and Superman and the Justice League. What can I pick op right now and enjoy without needing too much back story?

Isn't it great .... Only DC titles I've gotten back into and can recommend is Swamp Thing , and Sandman:Overture ( only 1 issue out now so be easy to jump in ). Heard a few other titles are good but only ones i can vouch for :D .

I've been enjoying V-ditty's GL so far, GL Corps has been pretty good too.

I'm not reading them, but when I set up at shows, just about all the Batman books sell well.

I'd read the Batman run. It's amazing. I think the Court of Owls will be one of the great Batman runs of this decade.

All-Star Western by Jimmy Palmiotti gets my highest possible recommendation. I bet you can find almost all the books for about two bucks a piece. Batman and Superman Unchained by Scott Snyder are very good also.

I don't do DC, I'm just a Bat-fanatic so my list is pretty small:
Batman- Court/Night of Owls (01-11) is one of my current top 5 Bat-stories. You like Batman, you'll *SQUEE* LOVE this story. After that it's not nearly as good, but every month is a good month when you have Batman designed by Greg Capullo- I dare anyone to find a person who doesn't think his Batman is probably the most iconic since a long Timm.e. :P
Even the issues where the art is handled by someone else (12) the storytelling talent of Scott Snyder comes across. He can be a bit on the wordy side, but I like his style a lot. Right now he's reimagining the origin of Batman, so I can't point you to a better perch. 8-)

Detective Comics 13-? These are great, not as good as the main title but John Layman gives us some very interesting new villain - Ogilvy- and has a dry sense of humour, that works really well. Batman actually detectives stuff for a change and you have Man-Bat as a back feature. I said in another place, it's a shame he's leaving with 29.

Batman and... 01-23 - This series can give you some of the best and some of the lamest. The first annual is one of the best comics i've read in the past year or so and most of the done-in-ones are all good, but there were a few bombs along the way- the second arc with that z group of villains (terminus?) was truly awful, for an example. Yet, some pretty good issues in that run, particularly from 15 onward. I am still on the fence about continuing buying it after the two-face arc, but I have yet to read it, plan to do so this weekend.

Batman: Eternal is a weekly series that is coming out in April, I think. Supposed to be a BIG thing (it will last a year).

Those are the Bat-books I read and can actually recommend. Others, not so much (i'm looking at you B:TDK, you stupid waste of my money)

I totally agree. I also really enjoy Batgirl and Batwoman, for different reasons. Batwoman is elegantly drawn and colored, and has a non-traditional hero book feel. Batgirl brings new life into the character while still resurrecting history that goes back to my youth.

As an aside, I'm cleaning up my desk and am looking at a Previews page I ripped out with 2 action figures I want grab: Greg Capullo Batman and Greg Capullo Talon. Awesome! I'm skipping the Nightwing and Riddler, although they are nice.

I already ordered the Bats, but the Talon is awesome also...

On topic: I've been tempted to read V-ditti's run on GL (is it over?). That's the only thing non-batman related that I might be interested (dig the character, really, REALLY dig the writer. And I think he's got some experience with super-powered artifacts. :? :P

Instocktrades.com has all the Batman TPB' s and HC's and that is a great way to collect the series instead of buying the individual issues. The Batman: Court of Owls TPB is 45% off cover price or $9.34 and the HC is 45% off or $13.74. You get Free Shipping once you order $50.00 or more. You can also find the other Batman tie-in stories that went along with the series for pretty cheap. I just keep ordering the HC's as they become available and read the stories that way.

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone! I'm definitely going to check this Owls story out. Is Court and Night two different things? If so which is first?

All Star Western ...the title alone has piqued my interest.

Is anyone writing good Superman stories these days?

I've also seen people mention Aquaman. This seems silly, but so did the idea of a Hawkeye book and that is fantastic.

Those are great prices on trades, but I'm all digital these days. I miss having physical copies, but I don't miss arguing with the wife about where to store them :)

Court of the Owls is Volume 1
City of Owls is Volume 2
Night of the Owls is all the tie-in stories from all the other Batman-related books
Death of the Family is Volume 3 and so on...

Do a search on Instocktrades to see all the different titles. With digital reading, you will get them even cheaper.

My old LCS owner said the New 52 Aquaman was awesome, but I never read it myself.

Hope this helps, Captain! :)

I read the first N52 trade of Aquaman, Geoff Johns made this guy really cool for a while.
Then I lost interest, because it wasn't THAT good to keep on buying it. But I had a few laughs. :?

I ordered the first trade for V-ditti's GL, the guy from the LCS was all over it. I hope VEI can keep him, he's getting quite the Name.

He's really doing some new and interesting things with GL. much better than what Geoff Johns was doing lately. Rise of the Third Army and Wrath of the First Lantern were terrible imo.
