Delinquents #1

Post by Michael_Ayer »

Hm... Not sure what I think yet.

A&A is my favorite series. And I really liked the first Arc of Q&W (then barely made it through the artist's work in the second arc).

So, I was thinking I would really enjoy delinquents, and I don't know. I think I will have to see the rest of the stories. What concerned me was how it didn't seem to pick up from where A&A left off and it seemed that Archer was just 'different'. I think Armstrong can be written by almost anyone, but Archer has been perfected by Van Lente and now even though van Lente was co-writing this, it just didn't seem right. Which gets me nervous about Archers future...

I agree about Archer- he seemed a little unidiomatic. He was basically written a bit too normal. Boy has some weirdness issues going on after all. :P

But that art... DAMN! Almost Daredevil like. And this is just one of Kano's many styles! I hope to see a lot more of him after this. And the story was great too, very entertaining, aside from the occasional lapse of character.

Not all that funny, but it was a first number and they havent met each other yet. Although i dont think this will make people want to buy the next one if they were reading it as a new thing.

I thought it was a good set up issue. The art is solid a definite Aja feel to it and that's not a bad thing at all. Asmus has a definite grasp of Q&W obviously but felt that A&A was (like others have said) just a bit off and that could change completely next issue I mean we are dealing with a treasure story with hobos for gods sake. The only real issue I have is someone who doesn't know the characters might not really feel compelled to continue getting the issues if this is there jump on point. But people who would buy it anyways will have some interest in these characters to begin with.

I was entertained so I liked it.

i thought it was a good first issue...very Quantum and Woody. Archer and Armstrong fans may be a little disappointed because remember that this is Asmus writing the book, Van Lente just helped develop the story. Definitely looking forward to the rest.

I didn't buy it, but skimmed through it pretty thoroughly at my LCS. I've long since given up on A&A since issue 7 and about the same for Q&W. Delinquents was a new low in the short history of VEI. Cannot even fathom anyone green-lighting such a comic abomination.

Though I have to say, I -am- looking forward to the Bright miniseries coming up soon. Q&W old school.

I thought I would check in here first before reading as I quit reading Q&W out of disgust, none of this sounds like it would be something I would enjoy reading.

The only appealing character for me here is Archer. I'll check back later and see what the consensus is, I just read the AH tie ins and don't want to spoil the experience of those 2 books with a bad read.

I didn't mind it. Not as fun as A and A but enjoyable. They finally seem to have reigned in Woody a touch so while still an *SQUEE* he's at least not as douchie

Now if Valiant really had a good sense of humour they would put these quotes on the cover like they used to do with positive snippets from reviews on past issues.

Quotes from this thread for the cover of Delinquents #2-

"Hm... Not sure what I think yet"

"Not all that funny"

"The only real issue I have is someone who doesn't know the characters might not really feel compelled to continue getting the issues"

"Archer and Armstrong fans may be a little disappointed"

"Delinquents was a new low in the short history of VEI. Cannot even fathom anyone green-lighting such a comic abomination."

"I quit reading Q&W out of disgust"

"They finally seem to have reigned in Woody a touch so while still an *SQUEE* he's at least not as douchie"

Plaster those quotes all over the cover now that would be funny!

I agree with David...... don't mind saying this but...... just how did this issue get a green light?

(no offense to anyone who loves this book) But just how? What were they thinking..... :!:

This is a #1 issue which VEI marketed quite a bit.

Perhaps many will disagree with me. I was just very disappointed with this issue.

On a tangent... I've had the pleasure of meeting James Asmus on numerous events. He's a great stand up guy!!! Also very positive and enthusiastic.

I pretty much do not get excited with Asmus. He always seems to miss the point of the characters he writes.

Have you actually picked up and looked at it? It's a perfect sketch stock. Pencils work well but Inks do not bleed. It's not really "glossy" it's more "matte".

We had sketches done today by James and they looked fantastic

Did you guys read the same issue I did? I thought it was funny, a great set up issue for the series, considering it had to tell the back story of the hobo society, and VERY WELL DRAWN too.

Would you say it is superior to the previous sketch cover material?

I did the same as you Hawkeye! I was tempted to give this mini series ago but as I'd stopped reading Q&W and A&A a while ago thought I'd better check the reviews....I'll check beck in a couple of months to see of it improved! :?

The art was muddy, the story was not so funny, and the entire book felt like it was just put together just to get another book out of the door. IMHO it ranks right down there with the most disappointing material put out by VEI since their return. As a "Valiant First" this will NOT catch people and urge them to try other VEI titles and that's sad because the rest of Valiant First has been some of the best work they have done so far. If the rest of the series is of this same quality, the best thing that can be said is that it is a mini series and will be over soon facepalm

I liked it a lot. Then I checked in this thread to see what everybody else thought.

Maybe I've gone a bit nuts, but I enjoyed the small-frame art and thought the story was charming and goofy. Better than Quantum and Woody on its own, and at least on a par with Archer and Armstrong. Good stuff!

I think A&A, and Q&W stand a bit apart from the rest of the Valiant crew because they don't seem as serious as the rest. There have been some references that tie both books to the rest of the universe, but the humour seems to put a bubble around these characters for me.
Q&W seems like a half hour sitcom, while the rest of the line feels like hour long drama shows... A&A being a very quirky drama.

I like A&A, despite the "bubble". Q&W, I'm still not fully sold on, though it is getting better.

That said, this crossover seems to speak right to my "bubble". This issue set up the story, and gives a good reason for the boys to all run into each other. I'm looking forward to the next issue of this far more than any issue of Q&W.

Still boggles my mind how there can be folks out there not reading and loving Archer & Armstrong, but hey, I don't get vegetarians, either. Clearly there are mysteries in this world I am not meant to understand! :)

That being said, I love A&A and I liked Q&W, so I am ok with this. I am absolutely content knowing there are parts of the Valiant Universe where very silly things happen. :thumb:

I'm a fan.

Agree with Archer being a little different, but I'm assuming there's a character development taking place in issue #24 that occurs prior to this that will put him into perspective a bit. However, I did have a little PTSD as this reminded me just a bit of the first issues after the BWS run in VH1... fingers crossed it doesn't pan out like that *SQUEE*.

Art was so-so, but I loved how the first few pages played out like the opening credits of a movie.

Concept is pretty funny, looking forward to more./

:O

I don't know what to say.

I honestly thought this was the funnest read of BOTH series, and may be my favourite VEI comic to date.

I loved the almost cinematic style intro. The art and storytelling was fantastic and I laughed out loud on nearly every page.

I'd give this a solid 11.55/11.75! (Now THERE'S a quote for the cover!)
